highway 80, aka the highway of death, 1991; between kuwait and iraq.

In 1991, at the end of the gulf war, highway 80 became the subject of a mass attack by US coalition forces on Iraqi troops and civilians. US forces targeted the fleeing convoys seemingly because of the military equipment they were carrying. General Norman Schwarzkopf is quoted as saying "...I had given orders to my commanders that I wanted every piece of Iraqi equipment that we possibly could destroyed, because if we destroyed that Iraqi military equipment that was equipment that would not be around for them to use later." So, on feb 26, 1991, US aircraft bombed the roads in front of and behind the convoy, trapping around 3000 civilians, military, ambulances, tanks, etc. With the convoy trapped, the US then started bombing the 'traffic jam' they caused. One US soldier is quoted as saying "They were like sitting ducks." The bombardment continued for 10 hours, ultimately resulting in harrowing casualties and damage, with a gap estimate of between 200-10,000 deaths. Many seemingly went unreported or unrecovered due to bomb damage and debris.
