CHOCOLATE STORIES

The Reveal of the Naked Truth
A Collection of Musical Monologues and Mini-Plays
Written by Tamer Hill, Chida Rebecca, F.Y. Dawn and Shanika Cureton
APRIL 20th, 2018 |Lincoln Performing Arts Center| 8PM
When four African American women come together to share the joys and pains of life, you have an assortment of truths and even lies, called “Chocolate - the Reveal of the Naked Truth”. These Chocolate Stories are a collection of musical monologues and mini-plays which is the brainchild of local playwright and director, Tamera Hill, who says she got the idea while watching television. She quickly learned that she was falling victim to the lies she was seeing and hearing about who she was as a woman through media. “I saw the subtle ways messages were planted in the minds of our generation. Eventually I would believe it if I allowed the media to keep feeding it to me.”
With this epiphany, Hill decided to take control over what her eyes saw, and what her ears heard, and write her own narrative. “I am a writer and a filmmaker. I have the power to expose the lie,” she says.
Chocolate Stories is clever, witty, and provocatively co-written by F.Y. Dawn, Chida Rebecca and Shanika Cureton, along with Hill, who are all entrepreneurs. On April 20th, 2018 at the Lincoln Performing Arts Center, the audience will be invited into four people’s lies that became the truth. When asked what she hopes to accomplish, Hill says that she simply wants to empower people. Especially women of color. “I want them to know they are beautiful regardless of whether or not they see themselves represented well in media locally and abroad. I want people to know about what makes us strong. I want women to know how to use their weaknesses to overcome any adversity standing in their way.” In a day and time where women are using their voices to impact every platform imaginable, Hill says this piece is significant. “It’s time! I see us getting stronger by the day. We are comfortable wearing our hair, be it kinky, coily or nappy, we are loving who we are. I want to boost the momentum, and I think Chocolate Stories will do just that.”
For a decade Tamera Hill has packed out local theatres with her thought provoking shows, with underlying messages of hope, love and redemption. In 2017, Hill wrapped production on a short film called “Solo” debuting May 5th, and is awaiting the national release of her Sony film entitled “Never Heard,” which features a star-studded cast including: Kandi Buress, David Banner, Karrueche Tran, Robin Givens and Karen Ambercrombie, to name a few. Â Tickets for the play an be purchased on at www.ticketriver.com, and search “Chocolate”.
