ruby’s stomach churned at the thought of her new lab partner coming over in an hour. what if it turned into another night like the last? she couldn’t afford anything less than perfection on this test and she’d already lost one whole night of revising. the blonde set her phone back down on her desk and took a deep breath. last night was just a fluke, she told herself, trying to reassure herself that it wouldn’t happen again. she wandered out of her bedroom to the den to find one of her fathers sitting on the couch, scanning some case files he’d taken home from the firm, — blaine always seemed to bring his work home. carefully, she sat on the chair opposite him and waited for him to pause his work for a moment.

of course he had absolutely no problem in rose coming over to study, completely trusting of his daughter not to be getting up to anything unsavory. — ruby hadn’t lied of course, she’d merely obscured parts of the truth. he’d soon headed off to bed and ruby had retreated to her bedroom, attempting to get in a little extra revision before rose got here (just in case rose decided to pull the same thing she had last night). however an extra hour had passed since rose said they’d meet and the butterflies tumbling about in ruby’s stomach only grew more numerous. when her phone buzzed, face down against her desk, ruby scrambled to check the screen, nearly dropping it. she rose to go answer the door before thinking better of it. the girl took a moment to smooth down her hair and swap her northview high marching band sweatshirt for a green tank top and put in her contact lenses in lieu of her glasses. — she wasn’t trying to impress the brunette, she just didn’t want to be the nerd in the glasses who runs to the door the moment they get the text. that’s all. when she opened the door, the first words out of her mouth were accompanied with a furrowed brow. “where’s your backpack?”

rose couldn’t help but let out a quiet laugh. it wasn’t hard to imagine a flustered ruby, doing everything she could to go back to the topic of switching partners and how important studying was when rose started to talk about their last studying session instead. she had felt a sting in her heart that she wasn’t able to explain when she first got the other girls text, saying they were no longer partners. she was sure her father would wiggle his eyebrows at her saying something about how she was in love or some other nonsense, but that definitly wasn’t it. it was more likely that she was worried about her grade and having to work for it. not that she’d admit that either.

it was good for her that she was good at bluffing. rose didn’t actually bother to write their teacher about switching back partners, non of them liked her and her teachers and rose were happy to only exchange words with eachother when she distracted the other students. she was sure however, she could talk about it with mr benson the next time they saw eachother, a puppy eye here and an empty promise there and they’d be partners again.

 it was already dark out -not that it ever got truly dark in a city like new york-  and the streets were almost quiet, at least compared to the busy streets during the day. it didn’t take her that long to arrive at the anderons’, not as long as it took ruby to open the door anyways. she was about to send ruby another text when she finally opened the door in front of her. with an raised eyebrow she looked the other girl up and down, a smirk forming on her lips. she looked good, beautiful even, and her heart made another jump when her eyes settled on the others lips for a moment. 

“must have lost it along the way,” rose shrugged, shoving her phone back into her jeans’ backpocket. “you don’t have anything against sharing books do you?”

ruby: Fine, but we can’t make too much noise, my parents are going to bed.

rose: now i know where youve got this from

rose: im on my way

[blackrosc]

ruby: To my house?

rose: no to the moon

[blackrosc]

ruby: So? We have school tomorrow and my dads don't like me being out that late.

rose: it's not that late yet

rose: i can come over i guess

[blackrosc]

ruby: I'm not scared, it's just a school night.

rose: so?

[blackrosc]

ruby: It's way too late for pizza. It's way too late to even study either.

rose: i can bring you home after if youre scared

[blackrosc]

ruby: Nothing else.

rose: so that's a no to pizza

[blackrosc]

ruby: I’m serious, we need to actually study.

rose: we will

[blackrosc]

ruby: Okay. See you in an hour, then.

rose: dont forget your lips

[blackrosc]

ruby: To study?

rose: sure

[blackrosc]

ruby: Somehow I don’t think that kind of chemistry is gonna help me pass this exam on Friday.

rose: come over in an hour

[blackrosc]

ruby: All I need to learn is AP Chem.

rose: i can teach you some about chemistry

[blackrosc]

ruby: Don’t make fun of me.

ruby: If we’re gonna stay partners then we have to actually study, you know?

rose: i can teach you many things

[blackrosc]

ruby: I’m being serious.

rose: what do you want me to say?

rose: i'm unconditionally in love with you and hope you realise you love me too when being my lab partner

rose: i just need a good grade and youre nice to look at

[blackrosc]

ruby: Why are you being like this? I’m not the only person in this class who can get you a passing grade. Why are you messing with me?

rose: You're cute thats why

[blackrosc]

ruby: That’s not the point I’m trying to make here anyways.

rose: i know but it distracted you and gave me time to

rose: write mr benson and tell him that we changed our minds

rose: welcome back partner

[blackrosc]

ruby: I did not.

rose: yes you did

rose: it was nice, no need to be ashamed of it
