it's so funny that daeran is in his early 20s. being in your early 20s is literally just like that

the thing is that - even tho lann and tane are best friends, there's still a gap in their dynamic. she's the commander of the crusade, and lann wants to get a good grade in being a crusader, something that's both normal to want and possible to achieve. and that's basically what he tells himself when he tells tane he wants to protect her. It's For The Crusade. i mean, sure, they're good friends, and that's definitely part of that too, but the bigger portion of his rationale is because tane's the commander and he'll be damned if he lets anything harm her (which could lead to the crusade collapsing).

lann digs himself into this self-denial hole as he compartmentalizes all his feelings into the Good Soldier box. it's easy to think that way when all their interactions have been in the context of the war they're fighting. there's no room to think of it in terms of romance; they don't have time for all that anyway, and the commander especially can't afford any distractions (which is also what he tells himself)

the same happens with tane - she interprets everything that lann does as him being a Very Dedicated Crusader, and not necessarily something that's exclusively for her as an individual. the idea of them in a romantic context doesn't even cross her mind because she's too busy doing commander things. sure, there's been some times where there might've been something Romantic in the way they catch each other staring longingly, but she also doesn't want to misinterpret his actions in fear of losing her closest friend.

then, everything changes when they attack midnight fane early. tane loses her commander title and they all get exiled into the abyss. there's no more commander duties for tane (at least, not in terms of managing an entire army, etc), and lann doesn't have the excuse that he's doing everything for her = for the crusade. there's nowhere to hide; they're both forced to confront their feelings for the other, esp when tane gets kidnapped and lann gets deathly sick from abyssal corruption. theyve had close encounters with death before, nothing new really, but in both those instances, they couldn't really have done anything to prevent the other from getting kidnapped/getting sick. usually killing the enemy works, but not quite this time. and everything hits so much more different in the abyss. they're essentially on a suicide mission; they don't know if they're ever going to make it back to drezen (though they don't dare say that out loud), so everything feels more desperate and frantic and final. which leads to both of them blurting out their feelings earlier than they normally would. yay <3
