despite his angry huffing about the situation and his threat about 5 seconds, his words are empty and fell upon deaf ears regardless as izuku's examination of his cheeks extends far beyond 5 seconds. a lot of what Izuku says sounds like a shit-load of jargon-y nonsense to katsuki — just deku nerding out in that dweeby way he so often does.

still, as the moments tick by and izuku's still intensely staring at him and cupping his cheeks, katsuki feels the furrow in his brow deepen. the flush in his cheeks grows darker too, from a mix of anger and embarrassment ( as well as some secret third thing that katsuki is nowhere near prepared to contend with ) .

"i don't know what the hell your ass is rambling on about at all. i just wash my face and use sunblock 'n shit. now WILL YOU LET GO OF ME YOU GODDAMN NERD?!?" katsuki bellows, irritated and flustered yet still not moving a muscle to actually shove izuku away from him. he's resolved not to be such an asshole to izuku. he's far from the bully he used to be and knows he'll spend the rest of his days feeling like he has to make it up to the other boy. that doesn't mean he'll be all that nice.

kacchan is and will always be kacchan, after all.

         That's plenty of time !

         Izuku felt EMBOLDENED by Kacchan. He hadn't been immediately detonated. Feeling the heat on his face from Kacchan's warning, Izuku's eyes darted to his palms for a quick second, but he otherwise looked unbothered by the little explosions. His fingers curiously squeezed Kacchan’s cheeks, almost as if he were conducting an experiment — something he'd wanted to do for so many years. They weren't like Uraraka's soft and cushiony cheeks. Kacchan's cheeks had a certain f i r m n e s s to them beneath the surface, Izuku couldn't help but find them more appealing, more . . . f a s c i n a t i n g in a way that made his heart beat just a bit quicker. The baby fat on Kacchan's cheeks had never disappeared. It made him look despite his mean nature, rather ADORABLE when he snarled up his face. Since they were kids, he'd always thought Kacchan looked a lot like an a n g r y p u p p y.

         ❝ Your cheeks, Kacchan, �� Izuku said, his eyebrows lifting up dramatically, his voice full of soft awe, ❝ they're so SQUISHY ! They feel exactly as I imagined they would. The texture, the plushness — it's AMAZING ! ! Did you know that cheek fat retains its volume the longest because it's one of the most resilient types of tissue ? That's why Kacchan's cheeks have this incredibly soft texture that's stayed since we were kids ! ❞

         He leaned in closer, his eyes scanning Kacchan's face with intense focus.

         ❝ And when Kacchan's angry, the blood flow to your face increases, making them even more squishable. It's really interesting how your emotions can affect the physical properties of your body. ❞

         Izuku's eyes sparkled with genuine admiration, completely absorbed in his observations.

         ❝ I’ve been reading about facial anatomy and how different expressions and emotions can alter muscle tension and fat distribution on a person's face. Kacchan's face is a perfect example of that ! ❞

         He pressed Kacchan’s cheeks together to feel their underlying structure, his thumbs exploring the smooth skin of his face with a n a l y t i c a l i n t e r e s t.

         ❝ The way your sweat glands produce such a volatile substance without damaging your skin is intriguing . . . It must be a unique adaptation, considering how delicate skin can be. Your skin has to be tougher to withstand the constant explosions, yet . . . Kacchan's skin is so smooth to the touch. I bet your sebaceous glands work overtime to keep everything moisturized. It's actually quite impressive how your skin maintains its elasticity and firmness despite the stress it receives from your Quirk. The collagen and elastin fibers must be super strong.          ❝ The way your skin handles the heat from your explosions and the ability to generate explosive sweat without causing burns or damage shows how your body has adapted to harnessing such power. It's a perfect symbiosis between your Quirk and your physiology. ❞

         He thought about Kacchan’s mom, Auntie Mitsuki, who also had perfect skin. She didn't look like a mom at all; she could pass for Kacchan's sister if nobody knew. ❝ Glycerin . . . I wonder which inherited genetic component from Auntie helps protect your skin from the effects of your Quirk . . . ❞ Izuku finally paused and met his eyes, his fingers lingered on Kacchan, tracing the scar on his cheek — the only rough part on an otherwise flawless surface. ❝ Do you think it might be from Uncle Masaru ? ❞

katsuki's completely blindsided by the sudden action from izuku. despite the way the nature of their relationship has developed over the years, as boyfriends, izuku isn't all that huge on being all that showy with the pda. he's more the type to ask or tell katsuki he wants to kiss him, as if a part of him might fear that katsuki will tell him no or turn him down. katsuki, surprisingly enough, is the one that tends to initiate affection.

however, he's certainly not complaining.

even if izuku surprised him with that leap, katsuki's reflexes are quick and he catches him, holding him tight and close as he eagerly reciprocates the kiss. izuku's lips are, unsurprisingly, a little chapped but sweet still and katsuki likes that. there's that spark between them, ignited more like a flame. katsuki feels his stomach twist in knots the same way it did the first time he'd kissed izuku (which also happened to be when katsuki confessed to him, because izuku wouldn't get it through his thick skull that katsuki liked him).

they part, just a little, foreheads pressed together instead, and katsuki can't help the face-splitting grin as his own gaze stares into the prettiest shade of green he's ever seen. he wanted to act annoyed, because that's the act katsuki likes to put on, particularly when he's embarrassed, but he can't help the joy he feels in the moment. it's such an overwhelming feeling.

"because i'm fuckin' curious? does the damn reason matter?!? now are you gonna tell me or not?" katsuki asks, raising his tone as a sign of his irritation. trust izuku to beat around the bush and be annoying about it. first todoroki didn't even understand what the hell katsuki was trying to ask him, and then there was izuku guarding the truth like it was some nugget of forbidden knowledge. did izuku even actually know, or was he just yanking katsuki's chain?

"i don't... really know," katsuki begins, speaking truthfully. it's rare for him to be so open as he just was, but he couldn't help but be overcome by this feeling of wanting to speak truthfully. so often, katsuki is rude and shouts and tells shouto he's not his friend, even when he very clearly is. although katsuki initially detested him (for entirely ridiculous reasons), they'd grown close because of those classes they had to take together, in addition to both of them doing their work studies at endeavor's agency. in that time, katsuki's come to recognize that shouto's company isn't so bad. he's a nice guy.

"i guess 'cause i'm always talkin' shit to you, i wanted to make sure you knew i actually, uh," katsuki halts in his words then, feeling his face heating up. god, why is trying to be amiable with his own fucking friends so god damned awkward. he shouldn't have opened his damn mouth in the first place. "y'know, that i like you. as a friend! a good friend! i know i can be a shithead sometimes, but you don't really care. you see past it. it's cool."

He tried to think back if this was the first time he'd seen him so flustered. It was rare to hear him talk so openly about his feelings, if at all. But he felt honored to know he trusted him enough to be so open. He wouldn't consider him to be hard to understand. If anything, he was so straightforward it didn't take much to understand. Just like now, even though this was new for him, he nodded in agreement. He wouldn't press further than what they already spoke about. The direct statement was more than enough for him to understand his intentions. It made the younger feel content knowing he had someone like his 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐀𝐒𝐒𝐌𝐀𝐓𝐄 supporting him.
