Flo Jo World Record Nails - March 27, 2017

Making art can be like spring training. We talkin bout practice & praxis. I spent an Olympic summer hand-painting thousands of acrylic fingernails, one by one. I made the nails fly off of a scale model of a racetrack, starting on the curve and ending on the home straight. I could identify with the experience of excelling in my work while also being told that I didn't have the right "look" for the job. It happens to black women all the time. Flo Jo owned her look like regalia, bringing a flawless slay. This is the kind of exuberant display of Black Excellence on an international stage that I want to celebrate, which is why I dedicated so much time to this work. She set a record that she still holds and looked great while doing it in this #iconic manicure.

OKAY! I’m re-loaded.

I have had the words “Mamie Till” hanging in my studio ever since the [fake, bc duh] news broke that the woman who lied on Emmett confessed to the world that she did indeed lie. I look forward to seeing Dana Schutz’ painting of Emmett Till at the WB but all this news keeps pushing me to remember what motivated BLAXIDERMY in the first place.....

Might have to re-activate. Stay tuned.

I saw the painting, through a field of protestors. It’s not right. It’s Blaxidermy. It’s the mutilated black body being put on display by whites for whites. I’m sick.

Tumbleweave N°20. 2015-05-07-1700. Southbound NJ Tpk between exit 13 and 14, passenger cars side. Oh. My God. There is a flock of tumbleweaves over about a one mile stretch on the turnpike. Lord have mercy. #roadtrip There were many colors. I think they were wigs. Mom said they followed me from Harlem.
