occasionally i think about how percy and annabeth probably would have gotten together at the beginning of botl if things hadn't gone south that day

i think the slow burn makes us (or at least me) tend to misremember them as pretending they felt entirely platonically about each other until maybe mt st helens, but imo som is really the last time that was true

(she kissed his cheek at the end of som > romantic tension at westover hall (percy's description of annabeth, awkward dancing) > percy going absolutely insane over annabeth's disappearance > percy seeing aphrodite as annabeth > percy trying to beg annabeth not to swear off men > athena saying "i do not approve of your friendship with my daughter" > percy asking her to slow dance + her response > going on a date in early botl)

like it was all out there at that point, and if annabeth hadn't seen rachel and closed herself off, the plan would have been to make it official that day. confusion and jealousy over rachel, calypso, and luke (and other small things like volcano eruptions) got in the way every time they got close after that, but their feelings for each other were Known to each other even if they were unspoken and angst-riddled. and that's what makes a good fuckin slow burn

"Why're you crying?"

Will, still eyes closed, hair, golden and spreaded  contrasting with the dark fabric of the pillow, lifts a tanned palm to dry whatever Nico is talking about. Will knows what he's talking about. Tears always fall in the morning. It's not a matter of sadness or repression. It's rather a matter of eyes burning and sleep trying to escape the sky blue. Will is well aware but used to it by now, so when Nico points it out, he answers: 

"M'not crying." Groggy, croaking. The voice is still scratched with the glass of the morning, not yet eased with the dew.

Will opens his mouth again, and the soft inflexion of his mother comes out, guiding his words by the hand. "Momma used to call them," he adjusts his head on the pillow, matting some more the mess of golden wool, "little spilling of heart." His mouth crooks in a smile. It's soft and sleepy. In his mind, his mother is caressing his cheek, with her feverish knuckles. She's singing him to wake, caressing the blond strands, tangling them with some of hers; gifting him, her forever. In his mind, he leans on her touch, five more minutes, he pleads. Will was rarely a kid to throw tantrums, but he was whiney; still is. He used to pout and open his eyes, just enough for his mother to be enchanted and melted. In his mind, his mother is pressing a soft kiss to his temple. C'mon, raindrop, she says, Sun's shining with her elongated is and the bearly pronounced gs. Time to make the most of it, and Will swears by that. It has been his life motto for most of the times he had to wake up to something bloody and screaming or rise a darklord from his slumber. 

Nico just shifts closer. Like the cold-blooded creature he is, he seeks warmth, life, so he sways closer. He takes some of the tucked covers with him, and the sheet spills over, uncovering the mattress. He makes himself small, tucking the arms to his chest and beding the neck, just enough that his head can gently rest in the crook of his beloved's neck.

Will accepts. He buries, too, his chin in the dark matter that is Nico's hair, and he wraps strong arms to warm his little creature. He feels the lips innocently resting on his chest, the tip of the nose, always cold, even in the most scorching of heatwaves. Will run one finger down to the hollow of Nico's back, and he lingers. He adores - no, loves that part of him. If he could, he would bury himself there. If he could, he would stay like this forever. 

"You've a lot of them." Nico whispers, soft breath hitting.

i made a very generalized post awhile back with random resources but i wanna make a more specific one so:

Osiyo.tv is a GREAT resource for Cherokee history, language, and people. They have specific sections for interviews with Cherokee athletes, artists, foragers, leaders, national treasures, and women. Their full episodes also include some general news stories as well. The full episodes are really nice or even just the individual interviews and it makes for good background videos while you're working on stuff.

The Cherokee Phoenix newspaper is available online. It's literally a newspaper. It has newspaper and news website things.

This is a playlist for learning Cherokee. It's exactly that. Similarly, here is the Visit Cherokee Nation youtube channel which has just a ton of misc videos including also a lot of language stuff. Visit Cherokee Nation website also has a lot of stuff and links to other things, like events or historical landmarks.

Also, Cherokee Nation website. it's literally the official government website. It similarly has a ton of links and misc general information and news and such.

My friend also recommends taking a look at the National Museum of the American Indian's gallery, which shows a bunch of historic depictions of Native Americans particularly including in advertising and some brief history overviews. It's one good way to familiarize yourself with some examples of caricatures and offensive stereotypes commonly used surrounding Native Americans, which is very important if you're drawing an indigenous character so you know what to avoid.

I am assigning these as required reading for Piper stuff. Gonna write Piper? At least skim these. Just take a quick looksie. Okay? okay. Good. Also remember that you can always just look stuff up.
