For this week's blog post I focused a lot on including notes that I feel are very important to remember when preparing for and participating in an interview. The first card describes the STAR method which should be employed when answering questions where the outline pertains. The second card is full of notes on general info to know about the company you are interviewing with. The third card is some major “Dont’s” for interviews. The fourth card is general interview prep - just an outline to begin the process with. The fifth card is full of questions that you really want to have answers to. These answers should be dialed in and concise. You don’t want to sound like a robot though. The sixth card is a few notes on the way you speak in an interview and what to do and what not to do. The seventh card is a quote from John F. Kennedy that I found in a speech of his I was reading the other day. It’s an interesting quote in my mind because while it is rather obvious and simple it could potentially be very beneficial to keep in mind for the future. The last card holds a quote from Jack Kerouac, one of my favorite authors. It is a good reminder to pursue authentic experience and do things for yourself.

Ok, first of all, Blazers in 7. I could not be happier and it’s also wild because this is the first time in my lifetime that I’ve witnessed this. It did happen in 2000 but I was less than 1 and definitely don’t remember them going to the WCF. Moving on. The second card holds a note that I took in class and it refers to visualizing your interview day experience before hand. This will help you put yourself in the space you’ll be entering and zone into the mindset you want to have during the interview. The third note is a rough sketch of an outline that can be used for a number of organizational activities. It is an organizational tool that can help you group various aspects of a certain main or overarching topic into smaller sections so you can speak on the aspects more easily and distinguish them in your mind. The 4th card contains a note regarding your personal point of view specifically during an interview. This is a note to remind myself to have a solid, authentic, researched point of view on certain aspects of the company so when these questions are brought up in an interview you know where to go and what to speak about. The 5th card is another note about company research and it contains a few main points to research when you are making interview notes and learning about the company. The 6th card contains a quote from Jim Carrey that I really like. It basically says that you shouldn’t be afraid to go out and make your dreams a reality even if you think they are seemingly “too big.” He talks about asking the universe for what you want and in my mind what this boils down to is manifesting what you want and manifesting your desired reality through re-working yourself and focusing your mind on the right things. The 7th card holds a quote from Kurt Vonnegut that was originally found in his book, Slaughterhouse Five, in a slightly different form. Slaughterhouse Five is one of my favorite books and I really like this quote because it speaks to the idea of the eternal moment. Additionally, it relates to the idea that all we have is the current moment and we should do our best to be grateful with the present moment and live in it fully, being as present as we can possibly be. The final card contains a headline regarding the latest discovery by the scientists that work with the Hubble telescope. The latest and most detailed picture of the universe shows that there are 265,000 galaxies in our known universe and there are certainly more in the parts we can’t see and haven’t discovered. This is obviously very difficult to fathom but I wanted to include it because I think it is very significant. It really can put things into perspective and it is extremely thought-provoking.

The first 3 note cards contain a few notes I took about resume building. Some came from in class and some came from personal research. The 4th card is a great quote by Eddie Rickenbacker who is a highly celebrated WW1 pilot. It discusses very positive practices and I do my best to incorporate what he talks about into my own life. The 5th card should speak for itself. That shot was absolutely crazy and I won’t forget it any time soon however I feel it is still worth noting because its significance and what it represents is very inspiring. I included the following card for the same reason. The fact Kyler Murray was drafted #1 overall in the NFL draft and #9 in the first round of the MLB draft is an inspiring act. I think it is significant enough to include and keep in mind because it represents many great practices and virtues such as hard work, dedication and the idea that you can be great in relatively different fields of activity. The following quote by Alan Watts is thought-provoking because as I make my way towards graduation I will be getting closer and closer to more change and unknown circumstances than I have ever experienced in my life. This quote inspires me to go into that with confidence, optimism, and appreciation. The final quote is one by John Steinbeck that I like a lot because of what it says about mindset relating to the creative process. To me, it encourages the individual to observe the method in which they generate ideas and to do their best to replicate and expand on that method. It seems like a less fragmented approach compared to certain things I have seen, heard, or read on the topic of creativity and understanding creativity.

The first two cards I included in this weeks lineup are notes I took in class. I feel that the checklist for the power statements is a good thing to keep in mind because it is a good way to govern and shape your power statements. If you are able to check off everything on the list your power statement will be solid and feel well rounded. The info on card #2 is a note I took for myself because I found the reasons behind formulating the power statement in a certain manner to be interesting. The third card contains the 4th rule out of the 12 rules Jordan Peterson writes about in his book “12 Rules for Life”. I really like the idea behind the rule because it is a great thing to keep in mind when you are in the process of developing yourself and finding the things that make you the best person you can be. Additionally, I like the fact it discusses not worrying or focusing on what others do because that can be very distracting and pull your focus away from your own personal journey. The quote on the fourth card is from Dr. Joe Dispenza who is a researcher and author and I included the quote because I find the idea to be very motivating and thought-provoking. The fifth card is a note from a guest lecture in my entrepreneurship class and I included it for a couple of reasons. First of all, I think it is good, solid advice when you are dealing with presenting to investors and something I want to keep in mind for potential situations in the future. Second, I thought it was interesting that the idea of being personable, reaching out, and creating relationships with the investors you present to related to what Amy Phelps said about following up after an interview even if you didn’t get the position to say thank you for the experience, etc. On the sixth card, there is a quote from Eckhart Tolle that I really enjoy about being present wherever you are. I practice being in and observing the present moment as holistically as I can though sometimes this practice can be difficult while simultaneously juggling a school schedule that often necessitates looking ahead and preparing for the future. The quote from Bruce Lee on the seventh card is another quote I really like and I think it is a good idea for people to intuit and reflect on because it can lead to very beneficial revelations and practices I have found. The 5 P’s on the eighth card is just something I believe to be good to keep in mind and a rule that, as a student, I follow to the best of my ability.

This week I came across many quotes that I found inspiring, thought provoking, and timeless. The first two quotes are from class and I thought they were important enough to note because they are very valuable lessons, however seemingly simple they may be. I think they are great things to keep in mind when interviewing as well as during a professional career. The MLK quote is thought provoking and inspiring, I feel that it’s entirely true and a very good lesson to follow. I picked up the alchemist in a book store this weekend and the opening lines jumped out to me. The fable shows us a timeless lesson, one that is extremely valuable in my mind. I think personal development is a lifelong process but this is a great lesson to keep in mind and have as a part of the foundation of that growth. The unknown quote posted Lillard’s IG is an interesting idea to think about and attempt to put in to practice in ones own life. To me it’s applicable to both work life and personal life. Additionally I think it indirectly touches on a good point, that it’s a good idea to listen a lot because listening is a great way to learn in any number of situations. My friend sent me a picture of the four agreements and I really liked how concise they were and the powerful nature of the ideaology behind them. They are things that I work to incorporate in my life and again I think these things are great to keep in mind whether you are in a work situation or personal life situation. The last quote by Alvar Aalto is something that I found to be interesting and good food for thought as a creative person who enjoys making art.
