Talk to the most seasoned veterans in the business—the ones who prefer the title “bartender” to “mixologist”—and they’ll tell you that liquor is the least important part of their profession. In the words of cocktail writer Gary Regan, “Nobody comes to a bar for a drink.” As the argument goes, what we’re really searching for in the bottom of the glass is some form of connection or comfort: an easing of the day’s stress, the liquid courage to kiss a date, a few familiar faces before returning home to an empty apartment.

Among those who subscribe to this philosophy, Toby Cecchini is often cited as the consummate bartender. In his early days at legendary Tribeca restaurant The Odeon, Cecchini accidentally achieved what most mixologists aspire to: inventing a truly iconic drink. In his case, the Cosmopolitan. A refreshing, if unwieldy, five ounces of liquid, it fueled many a bartender’s nightmares throughout the 90s, as they shook up hundreds of the light pink drink each night.

In Cecchini’s words, “The Cosmo thing has become a weird, sticky wicket. I never thought I’d find myself defending the drink that was the albatross around my neck for 20 years. But in the last, say, eight years, so many other people have laid claim to it that I’ve had to go ahead and say I invented it—or at least, what you know as a Cosmopolitan. There was a horrible drink called the Cosmopolitan making its way around leather bars in San Francisco, previous to my redoing it. The unfortunate thing for me is that I didn’t give it another name. I simply took a name and a glass and recobbled it into something you’d actually want to drink.”

Since that controversial brush with fame, Cecchini has been thoughtfully redefining himself under the radar—and mastering the actual craft of tending bar. In fact, at the time of the Cosmopolitan, Cecchini had no intention to stay a bartender. His professional ambitions were (and continue to be) primarily literary. Yet just as he began to slip into a sort of despise for his day job, Cecchini took some time off to visit his extended family in Italy. There, he cites an uncle, Giuliano, as providing the “ah-ha” moment that bore us the Toby Cecchini so lauded by his contemporaries today.

“My uncle was furious at the notion that I might be embarrassed by my work. His thought was there was no shame in doing anything, so long as you were the best you possibly could be at what you do. That made me realize that—despite the success of the Cosmo—I really wasn’t a very good bartender at all,” Cecchini says. “I wouldn’t clean up between making drinks; I waited until after everyone had gone, because I thought that doing it in front of guests was a sort of servile gesture. But that conversation helped shift my perspective. Today, my MO is: this is my job, this is my space—to best welcome you here, we will operate by my standards.”

That sense of detail-oriented, methodical craft is alive and well at Cecchini’s current establishment: Long Island Bar. A neon-signed, vintage Brooklyn establishment, you’d be forgiven for confusing it with a dingy old diner. Formerly run by a trio of Spanish cousins—Emma, Pepita and Maruja—the bar retains much of its original 1949 charm. In fact, a myth about the place has been perpetuated by the press: that said cousins told Cecchini he could only have the bar if he kept it exactly the same. The truth is that it took an exceptional amount of labor to maintain the bar’s original look—all at the personal discretion and expense of Cecchini and his business partner, Joel Tompkins.

“During the buildout—which took a year and a half—the three ladies, who still are across the street, actually refused to see what we were doing. Then, the day before we opened, they finally asked for a tour. You have to remember, they ran the bar on their own for 54 years without another employee because, in their words, ‘You can’t make ‘em care,’” he says. “When they walked in the door, they started crying immediately, ‘It’s so beautiful, like the day we opened!’ We spent three hours walking around as they reminisced over every screw, every floorboard, noticing any small improvements we had made to the function of the space.”

That kind of subtle, hard-earned improvement on a classic is, coincidentally, the perfect metaphor for Cecchini’s cocktail style: take a beloved recipe and tweak it over and over until it becomes the best version of itself. For example, on the morning I interviewed Cecchini, no less than three regulars asked him to shake up an off-the-menu “Pendennis Club”—a gin sour with apricot liqueur named for a historic Kentucky country club. When you hear Cecchini describe his 15 years refining his version of the original, it becomes clear why everyone is such a fan.

“I’m constantly in the search for simpler and simpler cocktails,” Cecchini explains. “You can spend so much time with any given drink—like my experience with the Pendennis Club, where the primary challenge was trying to think through what they meant by apricot brandy in the original recipe. My method is to come at it as many ways as I can, and finally I’ve decided that a blend of Purkhart’s Blüme Marillen and Giffard’s Abricot de Roussillon does the trick. You can go through that kind of process with any cocktail, because unless you’ve tried 100 and tweaked it and tweaked it and tweaked it, you don’t really know it that well.”

Now extend those possibilities to every classic cocktail you know by name—and then some. Cecchini is sure to have shaken it up tens of thousands of times. From the negroni to the martini, the boulevardier to the paloma, his subtle choices shape each drink, altering the profile towards a touch more nuance and balance. My favorite example? Cecchini’s choice of negroni vermouth. Rather than opt for the traditional Carpano Antica, Cecchini blends Cinzano with Carpano. “In the original 1-1-1 negroni recipe,” Cecchini explains, “Carpano is a bully. Gins? Forget about it. You literally can’t taste the gin. And if something’s wiping out the flavor of Campari, you’ve really got a bully on your hands.”

Delightfully, Cecchini’s feisty, thoughtful approach to beverages extends beyond the alcoholic spectrum. Lingering over a Sunday brunch service, I watched his staff whip up the house recipe for iced coffee. It was so much more than just coffee and ice. Cecchini calls for house-made cold brew concentrate mixed in a 1-1-1 ratio with whole and soy milks. The result is mildly nutty with just a touch of sweetness and, most impressively, a just-creamy-enough consistency that persists over the course of the drink’s dilution. In short, it’s damn good, but it doesn’t beat you over the head with bells and whistles to arrive there.

Experiencing this methodical, yet understated approach firsthand makes you wonder if Cecchini might have another Cosmo up his sleeve—an iconic classic, just waiting to be unleashed. Yet nothing could be further from his mind. “I make up new drinks all the time, but they’re based on the same ratios and flavor profiles as the classics,” Cecchini tells me. “In the words of my good friend Joaquin Simo, it’s ‘Mr. Potato Head’—you take off the feet and put on a hat. But you have to know a lot about what you’re doing to be able to do that, to have a great palate and sensibility, a deft hand.”

To put it in a literary way, Cecchini is the Hemingway of cocktails: simultaneously prolific and plain, drilling down into the essence and discarding the superfluous. It’s a metaphor that goes deeper than one might initially realize, because Cecchini, in his own words, has always “bartended so I could write.” His early aughts opus, Cosmopolitan, is to bartenders what Kitchen Confidential is to chefs. Which is to say that Cecchini, more than anything else, is a storyteller. He may make one hell of a drink, but it’s the way he talks about it, the time he spends with it, that really draws you in. So yes, that makes him the consummate bartender. Because nobody comes to a bar for a drink.

Each layer can be rotated freely, and if the boundaries of pieces in all layers line up, the puzzle can be twisted vertically, interchanging half of the top layer with half of the bottom. Like Rubik's Cube, the pieces are colored. For the puzzle to be solved, not only does it need to be in cube shape, but each face of the cube must also have a uniform color. In its solved (or original) state, viewing the cube from the face with the word 'Square-1' printed on it, the colors are: white on top, green on the bottom, yellow in front, red on the left, orange on the right, and blue behind. Alternative versions of the Square-1 may have different color schemes.

The Square-1 puzzle was sold in this shape with instructions for turning it back to a cube. This is halfway through a vertical turn.

A good number of solutions for this puzzle exist on the Internet. Some solutions employ the classical layer-by-layer method, while other approaches include putting the corner pieces in place first, then the edge pieces, or vice versa. Some solutions are a combination of these approaches. Although these solutions use different approaches, most of them try to restore the cube shape of the puzzle first, regardless of the placement of the pieces and the parity of the middle layer, and then proceed to put the pieces in their correct places while preserving the cube shape. The shape is often restored first because it allows for the greatest range of possible moves at any one time – other shapes have fewer moves available.

The majority of solutions provide a large set of algorithms. These are sequences of turns and twists that will rearrange a small number of pieces while leaving the rest of the puzzle untouched. Examples include swapping two pieces, cycling through three pieces, etc. Larger scale algorithms are also possible, such as interchanging the top and bottom layers. Through the systematic use of these algorithms, the puzzle is gradually solved.

Like solutions of the Rubik's Cube, the solutions of Square-1 depend on the use of algorithms discovered either by trial and error, or by using computer searches. However, while solutions of Rubik's Cube rely on these algorithms more towards the end, they are heavily used throughout the course of solving the Square-1. This is because the uniform shape of the pieces in the Rubik's Cube allows one to focus on positioning a small subset of pieces while disregarding the rest, at least at the beginning of a solution. However, with the Square-1, the free intermixing of corner and edge pieces can sometimes cause a certain desired operation to be physically blocked; so one must take all pieces into account right from the beginning. Some solutions of the Square-1 rely solely on the use of algorithms.

If different rotations of a given permutation are counted only once while reflections are counted individually, there are 170 × 2 × 8! × 8! = 552,738,816,000 positions.

If both rotations and reflections are counted once only, the number of positions reduces to 15! ÷ 3 = 435,891,456,000. Also, it always can be solved in a maximum of 14 moves.(1)

The Super Square One is a 4-layer version of the Square-1. Just like the Square-1, it can adopt non-cubic shapes as it is twisted. As of 2009, it is sold by Uwe Mèffert in his puzzle shop, Meffert's.

It consists of 4 layers of 8 pieces, each surrounding a circular column which can be rotated along a perpendicular axis. This allows the pieces from the top and bottom layers and the middle two layers to be interchanged. Each layer consists of 8 movable pieces: 4 wider wedges and 4 narrower wedges. In the top and bottom layers, the wider pieces are the 'corner' pieces, and the narrower pieces are the 'edge pieces'. In the middle two layers, the wider pieces are the 'edge' pieces, and the narrower pieces are the 'face centers'. The wider pieces are exactly twice the angular width of the narrower pieces, so that two narrower pieces can fit in the place of one wider piece. Thus, they can be freely intermixed. This leads to the puzzle adopting a large variety of non-cubic shapes.

Despite its appearance, the Super Square One is not significantly more difficult to solve than the original Square-1. The middle layers are nearly identical to the top and bottom layers of the Square-1, and may be solved independently using the same methods as the Square-1. The edges of the middle layers are distinguishable because the edges with the same two colors are mirror images of each other, but the centers of each face are interchangeable since they show only one color each.

The 'Square Two' is yet another variation of the popular Square-1 puzzle, with extra cuts on the top and bottom layers. It is also currently marketed by Meffert's online store.

The Square Two is mechanically the same as a Square-1, but the large corner wedges of the top and bottom layers are cut in half, effectively making the corner wedges as versatile as the edge wedges. This removes the locking issue present on the Square-1, which in many ways makes the Square Two easier to solve (and scramble) than its predecessor.

The Square Two, like the Super Square One, isn't much more difficult than the Square-1. In many ways, it's actually easier considering one can always make a slice turn regardless of the positions of the top and bottom layers. Mostly, it's solved just like the Original, merely requiring the extra step of combining the corner wedges. After that, it is solved exactly like the Square-1.

There are a total of 24 wedge pieces on the puzzle.

Any permutation of the wedge pieces is possible, including even and odd permutations. This implies there are 24!=620,448,401,733,239,439,360,000 possible permutations of these pieces.

However, the middle layer has two possible orientations for each position, increasing the number of positions by a factor of 2.

This would theoretically yield a grand total of (24!)*2=1,240,896,803,466,478,878,720,000 possible positions for the puzzle, but since the layers have 12 different orientations for each position, some positions have been counted too many times this way. This reduces the number of positions by 12^2.

Kepler 16b

This discovery confirms that Kepler-16b is an inhospitable, cold world about the size of Saturn and thought to be made up of about half rock and half gas. The parent stars are smaller than our sun. One is 69 percent the mass of the sun and the other only 20 percent. Kepler-16b orbits around both stars every 229 days, similar to Venus’ 225-day.

Kepler-16b orbits the binary stars, a K-type Kepler-16A and an M-type Kepler-16B in the constellation Cygnus. Kepler-16b is the first object discovered orbiting a binary star. This means that two “suns” are visible from the surface of the planet. Its orbit is located at the outer edge of the habitable zone of the brighter star, Kepler-16A.

Kepler-16b is a gas giant that orbits the two stars in the Kepler-16 system. The planet is a third of Jupiter's mass and slightly smaller than Saturn at 0.7538 Jupiter radii, but is more dense. Kepler-16b completes a nearly circular orbit every 228.776 days.

Kepler-16b has a radius of 8.5 times that of Earth and a mass of 105 times that of Earth. It is close to the size Saturn from our solar system, and is considered a gas giant. If it has a sufficient atmosphere, there is a possibility for life to occur.

When it’s clean, chrome glimmers—there’s no other word for it. The downside? Chrome succumbs fairly easily to surface blemishes, and while these blotches and streaks do catch the eye, it’s for all the wrong reasons. Compared with other common household materials, even different types of metal, chrome is not especially difficult to clean. More than anything else, persistence is the key to keeping chrome looking its best. For tips on making your chrome shine, check out the suggestions below.

Soap and Water

One of the most effective ways to clean chrome is also one of the simplest. Add dish soap to a bucket of warm water, dip a soft cloth or nonabrasive sponge into the solution, then get to work scrubbing the chrome. As you go along, rinse the cloth or sponge frequently in order to dispel the dirt that has begun to loosen and break free from the metal. To clean any creases or crevices you come across in the chrome, opt for an old toothbrush; the bristles can work the soapy water into areas you wouldn’t be able to reach otherwise. Finish up by rinsing the metal with clean water in order to eliminate any residual traces of soap that remain on the chrome.

Vinegar

More potent than dish soap is distilled white vinegar. Using a one-to-one ratio, mix the vinegar with plain old tap water, then apply the solution by means of a cloth or nonabrasive sponge. Again, use a toothbrush for any hard-to-reach areas. Remember that vinegar works so well on account of its acidity, which dissolves even long-established grime. So as not to dilute its strength, take care not to mix the vinegar with too great a volume of water.

The methods discussed here involve neither harsh chemicals nor heavy-duty cleaning tools. That’s because chrome is a soft metal. It can be scratched even by a scouring pad, so avoid the temptation to use a sharp edge on stubborn stains. Also, if you’re intent on using a commercial cleanser, be sure that its label says the product is suitable for chrome.

Now that you’ve done a thorough job of cleaning, you can either call it a day or go one step further to leave the chrome with an impressive shine. Interested? Two words: chrome polish. You can find it at most auto stores, or you can buy it online. Different polishes require different application processes, so closely follow the directions listed on the container of polish you decide to purchase. Now, instead of noticing fingerprint smudges, you’ll be seeing your reflection in the newly gleaming chrome.
