Critical Framework C Critically annotate II
I want to study more about people's relationship with the city and citizens' relationships with me. Another, I would like to try some different to observe and explore direction. Also, I reviewed my project. I have reflections about express and display ways of works. There is some artworks/ project which I referenced about these.
Firstly, I want to study other relationships in the city. I referenced some art projects from “Make A Chance.” Their projects mostly explore people's relationship with the city and citizens' relationships like “16 cities.” It expressed and proved these relationships through some missions. These make them have another viewpoint to observe/understand/blend in the city. I found another observation direction to explore “CITY” because of their projects. When I use a new viewpoint to see the city where I thought I know well.  Could I find the other side? Does it change my thinking? How different the change of my review? I want to express these in my works.
Secondly, I am looking for ways to communicate/ record the "city" without describing the space. Patrick’s still life work use lines and simple color. Also, He didn’t have lines to depict space. He just used perspective to imply space when he depicted the objects. My previous works mostly depicted building to express my feeling of “city.” I rarely represent “People” (No matter the portrait or some objects that can prove people.) in my artworks. However, I try to add some “people” elements when I started to study the relationships with the city. Therefore, if I don’t depict space, Can I describe objects to express the city? What kind of objects could represent my image of cities? Why? It will be an idea for my next project.
Moreover, I started to do some video work from last semester. I am still focused on presenting  “vision," so they didn’t have sound. Johnna’s work makes me find interesting parts of “sound.” It could make the works more abundant, like his work coordinate with images. Even if it just has sound, it could arouse the imagination of viewers. Also, it could remind someone's memories of somethings. Therefore, I want to study more about the sound of the city. What sound could represent this city’s image in my mind? Not only Sound, Maybe I can try other senses (Taste/olfaction/touch) to create work.
Lastly, I have more reflection about the display ways of works because of Jaromír’s exhibition. I think the relationship between space with work is one of the important elements in this exhibition. For example, one of the works is a small blue painting hangs on a big write wall. There are two square holes under the wall. I have some reflections about the relationship of holes with the works. Where the holes connected? Is the work depict the space which they connected to? It shows how important expressed space to the works. I want to think more about the display way/ space of my work.

Just a Narrow Range of Possible Things  Axel Vervoordt Gallery, Hong Kong  Jaromír Novotný 2020
It is an exhibition to express the power of memory and remembrance through color and materiality. Jaromír used many different materials paint on canvas like he using acrylic on polyester organza, stretched on a wooden frame. Therefore The works are stereoscopic. Also, these materials show texture. The textures are the marks (like some fingerprint) left by the artist when he creates the work. The viewers not only watch the work but also they can “feel” it because of these textures. Moreover, They would have another viewpoint to  “PAINTING.”

It Is Impossible To Know About Earth So We Must Hear Her Voice In Our Own Way Johann Diedrick   2017
This is a sound work created by Johann’s  mobile listening kit call “Good Vibrations Mobile Listening Kit.” It has contact microphones and portable amplifiers so it can hear quiet sounds in the environment. This Work showed the sound and photographs which he collected. They mostly came from our daily or nature like the reverberations of street life transduced through a hollow pole, the gliding of ocean waves against sand, etc. Maybe we didn’t hear that sounds, or we had heard but we missed it. It is a work to express that even our daily life we still could find some surprise if we are trying to explore it.

Coloured Still Life Patrick Caulfield Screenprint on paper 559 × 914 mm 1967
It is a screen print still life work. It depicts a water pot, three cups, and a bowl. He just used a black line to outline the objects and horizontal painting in some different colors. Also, It doesn’t have any outline to depict the space where the objects in it. He just painted dark blue. This work represents an authentic image. However, Its painting way (black outline & horizontal painting) that easily makes the viewer feel confused about real and false.

16 cities travel tour (16座都市旅行團 ) Make a Change  2012 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltjvXfMipqc&list=PLC2A70FF04841EE6A&index=2
This is a project originated by the Hong Kong art group Make a Change. They invented 16 Hong Konger to join a different one-day tour in HK. They had to wear rainbows color clothes to join that day. There are four road points in this tour: Choi Hung(彩虹邨) /Festival Walk(又一城)(shopping mall)/ Mong Kok(旺角)/ Golden Bauhinia Square(金紫荊廣場). These both are HK popular tourist attractions. The start point from Choi Hung. The endpoint is Golden Bauhinia Square. They had done some missions on each road point; for example, they invited some people who wear the same color clothes to take a picture, sing Happy birthday Song on the little bus, etc.

I have a lot of change my Study way and life in last semester because of COVID-19. I had a special experience in this city. Also, I had another obvious and thinking about this city. Therefore, I would like to record this time through my work.  I am trying other mediums like video and photography start from last semester. I can express my thinking and feel through the colour or composition in painting. However, it is not easy to do the same thing in other material to me. Video or photography is realistic record image way for me. I am finding some way to express my thinking when I use these mediums.
First of all, I interested in "words". Word is a direct way to record and express things and feeling. However, I think it also could be the most obscure way to express emotion. Richard's "A hundred miles walk" used seven sentences to record seven days walk. They are simple sentence, but they recorded different feeling and experience: space, vision, sound, hallucination, etc.  Viewers could more clearly imagine the image of his walk through these "word".There is another work which I studied called MEMORY DISORDER created by Silas Fong. It is a work to imitate an action which people remind some memories. Some of the images have simple introductions. I think these introductions affect the viewers thinking of the images.I think "word" is the most important part of this two artwork. Also, they show the relationship of word and image like how the "words" guide or affect people's thinking to the images.
Moreover, I studied some still life works. I think it is an exciting way to express. I would have many questions when I look still life work like Rodrigo's The Shelf: Objects and Shadows.  What is it? Is it have any meaning? What is the sign of the object? Why it in this space?  If I use still life work to depict the city, What things can represent these cities (HK/ MEL/ Other?)? What is it mean for the citizens?
Lastly, My work more focus on expressing my life in Melbourne start from last semesters. I would like to record and express my life in this city and my feeling. In my opinion, I could find my identity and try to find feet in this city. Also, I could understand more the value of the city. On Kawara's "I Got up" It is a work record his daily and thought it to share life to others. Although the postcard has a picture of the place where he stays, the date when he sent it, he got up time and place name. I think this work is a prove of himself and at that time. It reminds me that nowadays, people would use social media to record and share their daily.  These proved of our existence. Also, Some of the people would like to find themselves through other's reply.

This work depicted the objects are the painter commonly used materials like a roll of cotton wool, masking tape, a plastic container of turps, a bottle of oil and another empty bottle, and a funnel. He was painting shelves or tables in his studio. It is a work that represents his daily. The color and shadow were gentle in this painting. I think that It expressed his feeling of the space.

MEMORY DISORDER
2011  Web Page Approx. 10 mins depends on internet connection speed
https://youtu.be/rzDZLHODiQ8
Silas tried to use a computer to imitate a person how to  remind some memories. The represent way referenced movies. This work present on the website. The way of expression would be different with a different computer. I think It means the same memories would have further understanding in every people. Moreover, most parts I am interested in used different ways to collect and express the image, and Some of the pictures have simple sentences to introduce.

Critical Frameworks B Critical Annotation II
In this Semester, I try to find my way to express “my cityscape.” There is some research about different observe views and ways of expression to the city.
First of my reference art works is Anselm’s painting called “ Zweistromland - The High Priests.” I mostly express my feeling and experience of the city in my works. I enjoyed observing HK when I am walking. It helps me to find out many exciting things happening in this city. However, when I moved to Melbourne, Most of the cityscape where I saw, through the window of transportations or buildings. Therefore, I am interested in Anselm's work because It expressed the image of the highway in raining. Also, I think this view is from the car's windshield to see the outside. I have resonated because of this image. It is Melbourne's cityscape in my mind. Moreover, It an interesting view and a realistic way to observe and express the city.
Another works is Michael’s “Ins and Outs.” The Space of Michael’s works mostly is hollowness and barren. He depicted a house in this work. The light of the house is the only light in this work. I think it expresses the comparison of placelessness with the home. His work reminds me that even sometimes this space (city- Melbourne?/HK?) would make me feel disturbed and powerless. It still will have someplace like home let me feel safe or like a lighthouse to lead my way. That is one of the ideas I would like to express in my works.
Most of my works are painting or drawing work. It is the easiest way to express my thinking. However, it would be an element to limit my idea. When I heard N-buna that song, I would like to through sound to record “cityscape.” The background music of this song added some daily sounds like water sound, clock sound, and phone ring tone. They represent time in this song. I think they also represent space. When I am watching the MV, I think the relationship of the sounds with the city in the MV. Therefore, I think record city sound it could be the abstract way to express city, but it would be realistic to record mine daily in the city.
Naoki’s works express a special view to observed the city. The cityscape becomes playful in this view. Also, It gives me an alternative view of the city. I had visited Ikebukuro Station. However, I saw a different scape from this train station in this work. It makes me misunderstand it is a false image ( a city model?). I understand that it is not necessary to use realistic expressions to describe the city because of this work. Sometimes I should add some alternative views or ways to express. Maybe It will better represent the cityscape in my mind.

Anselm Kiefer
Zweistromland - The High Priestess
1985-87
mixed media on two canvas panels with applied wire and metal object
130 x 220 in. (330.2 x 558.8 cm)
This painting work depicted the highway. It used painting texture and added other media ( like applied wire and metal objects) in this painting to express the image. It makes the picture blurry. Also, This painting’s leading color tone is gray blue. I think the image like the view of driving in the rain. Moreover, It is fuzzy to see EUPHRAT &TIGRIS these two words in the work. They are two rivers in SW Asia called The Euphrates and The Tigris.

Michael Raedecker Ins and Outs 2000 Acrylic and Thread on Canvas 198 x 330cm
Michael mostly depicts hollowness and barren space in his work. This work described a house in the suburbs. However, It expresses the image of a dark night, so most of the objects are blurry or just can see the shadow. The little house has some light. It is the only light source in this work. The light of the house looks like a lighthouse in this space. It makes us pay attention to it and have questions about what is happening inside the house.  Also, His way of painting reminds me of Chinese ink painting and Japan Ukiyo-e. They both used to line and simple colors to depict space, but They can realistically express the space.

 N-buna ,“ Cloud and Ghost” 2018
ヨルシカ - 雲と幽霊 (MUSIC VIDEO)
This song about a ghost back to visit "she" and reply "her." Also, "He" hopes "she" can try to forget him. It responds to N-buna's other song called "Say it" (言って). That song expressed something "she" didn't ask or talk to him yet. This song background music has many sounds of daily life, such as clock’s sound, phone ring tones, etc. Moreover, I think the image of this mv composed of a few layers. The first Layer is fragmenting an old town’s cityscape. The second Layer is the main character (the Ghost). The last one is some city objects like road signs, etc. 1st and 3rd layers would follow the main character walk to change.

Naoki Honjo Tokyo, Japan (Taxi Stand), 2005
This is a photographs work which takes the train station outside of  Ikebukuro(池袋), Tokyo. Naoki’s work mostly used tilt-shift photography skills. It uses a 5x4 film to take from a high angle. Also, It just focuses on a little part of the image. The objects of the image would be very tiny, and the scape would be blurry. It is easy to misunderstand that it is false cityscape.

Critical Frameworks B Critical Annotation I
My art project's main topic is about the city. I would like to study the relationship between me with Melbourne and Hong Kong in this semester. There are some of my references about the identity of the city/color/ way to express city space.
First of all, The identity of the city is one of the crucial topics in my work. I am a Hong Konger because there is some unique historical background. I am interested in this topic. I think the memory is one of the essential elements to build the identity of the city. And It is the most difficult thing to express in the image.
Therefore, I referenced “Moment” .it is a work of expressed feeling the artists’ some times. I am interested that she painted a realistic object, but she also added some unknown doodles and used abstract ways to communicate. It makes the viewer have more reflection. Moreover,  the objects can make some people (mostly From HK) will have resonated. I always paint some space to express my feelings/thinking, but I think my works are too realistic. They look like normal landscapes painting and cannot cleanly express feelings. I think her way, which used some objects or some meaningful image (some doodles), is useful for me.
On the other hand, I would like to spend more time studying the color and how to express space in this Semester. My works mostly depict the cityscape. I think the colour is one of the important elements to express my emotions. Another point, I am finding some different ways to express space. Therefore, there are three works that I referenced.
The first of the works is the movie "The red Ballon." This work used color contrast to express thinking. In this movie, the grey tone showed the city's atmosphere of disturbed and loneliness after WWII. However, I think this color tone of the cityscape matches the current city too. It showed indifference in the city. Also, it added the red balloon to represent hope.  It has a contrast with the cityscape to make the viewer have a reflection. Another point, it through the little boy's view to see the city. It is a unique way to see the city. I would like to try another form to seeing the city and express it to my work.
Second of works is David Hockneys' "Two Deck chair calve." The space in his work always makes me feel peaceful. I think the color is the main reason. It is very soft in his work, and even this work used some contrast colors. It is still fusion.  Also, This work most used a flat coating way to paint.  The shadows in this work are so faint. The light and dark aren't bright. It may be a reason why the work looks so peaceful and fusion. Third of works is the photograph work called "New Order, Hollywood Boulevard." I think the color of this work like some candy, and they are bright and untrue. Although It photographs of the cityscape, space looks like between real and imagined because of color tone. The most interesting part of this work is he used different color blanks to express space. The shadow also is one of the color blanks. It is very different from David's work. The color tone of David and George's works are mostly bright and unreal. However, I feel peaceful and warm to space, which expressed in their works. I think it is a consorted way to represent my feeling about the space of the city.

Two Deck chair calve David Hockney 1972 Acrylic on canvas 60in x48in
It is a painting work. It depicts the outside wall of a building. Its primary color is yellow, The doors and windows are blue. Also, two beach chairs used very bright colors to paint directly below the picture. I think this work is like to express a building in a seaside city. The composition of the whole artwork is straightforward and very real. Moreover, it used some colors all are contrast color,  but They are fusion in this painting.
