Cheap Ice Skates for Recreation
#1 American Athletic Cougar Softbook Hockey Skate
The #1 ice skate for beginning skaters is the American Athletic Cougar Softboot Hockey Skate. When first learning to ice skate you are constantly focusing on balancing yourself and moving forward at a comfortable pace. This can be hard on your ankles and cold on your feet. These American Athletic skates go above and beyond our expectations. They have extra thick foam padding making the skate extremely comfortable with great support, allowing skaters to enjoy themselves and want to stay on the ice longer. We found that the padding in comparable skates were not as comfortable and caused blisters and irritation when trying to support your balance, skating only for 30 minutes. The American Athletic Cougar skates are top notch and I can’t say there is a better skate out there for beginner to intermediate skaters, or advanced skaters who skate for recreation.
#2 Jackson Ultima Glacier GS180 Ladies
The Jackson Ultima Glacier GS180 are a great option for skaters who are just starting out. The interior is comfortable with memory foam, giving you extra support to attempt new moves. We would not recommend advanced moves above a double jump or axel jump. For first time buyers, be careful when ordering online because some Jackson boots and blades are sold separately. We would recommend this ice skate for beginning to intermediate levels. Make sure to wipe the blades after each use.
#3 American Athletic Tricot Lined Figure Skate
The Tricot Lined Figure Skates by American Athletic Shoe co. are also perfect for the beginning skater. The Tricot Lined Ice Skate features extensive padding, as well as a convenient and easy-to-clean PVC boot. Additionally, users say these skates are incredibly comfortable from the moment you open the box, no painful break-in period necessary. That alone makes them great for a beginner, or someone who isn’t a frequent skater. We would also recommend these ice skates for beginning to intermediate levels. We have had success with our students using these skates.
#4 Riedell 255 Motion Men’s Figure Ice
The Riedell 255 Motion Men’s Figure Ice Skates are made for professional competition skating, but also make a great recreational or free style ice skate. These skates are lighter than others in their class, allowing more agility and maneuverability. There’s a leather sole and upper, a Dri-Lex lining, and a 4-foot flex area all for added ankle support. This skate is extremely comfortable. This is one top-quality ice skate which is reflected by the price. Our recommendation to beginner skaters is to make sure you plan to skate frequently if you commit to this purchase.
#5 Lake Placid Glider 4000 Figure Ice Skate
The Lake Placid Glider 4000 Women’s Figure Ice Skate is built sturdy with a lot of support. Many time skaters who are just starting out will bend their ankles when skating. This will cause for an uncomfortable skate. Not with Lake Placid’s Glider 4000 though! The support system in the ankle and heel will keep you upright and moving forward. This skate is also fashionable with graphics engraved on the side. Overall, very nice ice skate. We would recommend these skates for beginning and intermediate levels as well. The stainless steel blade does not come factory sharpened, make sure to sharpen at the rink before first use.

2018 Best Ice Skates for Beginners
Before we dive into it I wanted to explain who I am and why this review can help you. I am writing on behalf of my skating and research team. We are a group of young adults who have grown up skating on lakes, ponds and ice rinks. Whether it be hockey or figure skating, we have competed at some of the highest levels. We deal with ice skaters at all levels, from skaters who are just starting out to advanced skaters looking to take it to the next level. Dealing with this many skaters has taught us a thing or two about every possible difficulty out there that skaters encounter. We see the same mistakes being made over and over again, especially with beginning skaters. So we decided to do something about it...write reviews online.
One of the most difficult things to do is find the right ice skate. Your ice skates are the most important part of your enjoyment during your first skate...no one wants to be uncomfortable. Many people ask us, How do you know what's a good skate? What's a good price point for first time buyers? How do I know if there is enough support while still being comfortable? What brands are reputable?
Well easy enough, we broke it down for you. We took many aspects and skaters feedback into consideration for all skates we tested and analyzed. In this article you will find the top 5 ice skates that we recommend to beginning skaters.
Please leave comments and questions below and we will do our best to help.
Enjoy!
