Strategy:

Sand Worms are all but invulnerable while underground and agile but deceptively fragile when exposed. Simply wait until this happens then hit the worm with your strongest attack.

Victory:

After defeating a Sand Worm, Steele can choose to use the worm as a living sex toy, capture it if the worm is male, or voluntarily submit to infestation if the worm is female.

Note that only one male can be captured(after which it becomes a Key item) and that voluntary infestation will still cause the two parasites to fight for dominance if one is already present.

Also note that the female's type is described one screen before the victory choices are presented.

Defeat:

After defeating Steele, the worm reacts differently based on its gender and whether or not Steele is already infested.

Males will determine whether Steel is infested with a female or not. If so, the male will inseminate the player character's parasite through anal sex. If not, the worm gets angry and instead fucks Steele senseless with its larger form's tentacle-tongues.

Females will always attempt to infest the player character. If a female parasite is already present, the two will fight each other inside of Steele's anus to determine which one will remain.

If the two parasites are different types, beige will always beat green, green will always beat orange, and orange will always beat beige.

Loot/Items/Equipment

Sand worms drop no loot or credits but are worth 500 XP.

Transformation

The three female variants have different egg-laying behaviors:

The scenario provides ample opportunity for ornate reflections on love and duty for everyone concerned, often via metaphors involving storm-tossed ships, guiding stars and turtledoves, and all five singers cover themselves in glory. Though the title-character is naturally assigned several show-stopping arias, it’s Zanaida who is the beating heart of the opera, and Galou brings her to life in all her emotional complexity: the role sits squarely in soprano territory, but the French contralto has no shortage of colours in her middle and upper registers and exploits every one of them to full effect, making particularly striking use of straight tone in her second-act aria ‘Io son rea’ and wringing maximum drama from the rather uninspired secco recitatives (almost certainly the work of an assistant rather than Vivaldi himself). Her first aria ‘Se lento ancora il fulmine’ (which made for a scintillating opener on Cecilia Bartoli’s Vivaldi album a couple of years ago) is a real tour de force, and indeed there’s something of Bartoli’s manic energy to Galou’s singing throughout, though the voice is considerably fuller and the coloratura notably less mechanical.

Her remorseful ‘Se la bella tortorella’, with Biondi exuding easy virtuosity in the lovely violin obbligato, is one of the highlights of the set and put me a little in mind of ‘Se in fiorito’ from Handel’s Giulio Cesare some eight years earlier.

Biondi’s energetic, imaginative direction is of course key to the success of the entire project, bringing real coherence to a work which could easily seem like Now That’s What I Call Music 1732: even the most pedestrian recitatives have drive and dramatic impetus, and he summons such an impressive range of colours from the small band that I was well into the third act before I registered that the work is scored for strings and continuo only. It’s another triumph for Naïve’s pioneering series, and for Galou and Biondi in particular.

Volume Six of the “Vivaldi Edition” of solo concertos for violin by Vivaldi is an opportunity to see another model. In this release by Fabio Biondi and his Europa Galante, we’re treated to a green cover with a female model, her hair festooned with an overly-large white flower. Think what you will of the covers, each of them are unique. And the covers have nothing to say about the music contained within.

This collection, entitled La boemia, takes its title from the fact that Vivaldi took a sojourn to Prague where he is believed to have written at least some of these concerti, late in his career, trying new ideas, at least we might think, to keep up with changing styles and cultural expectations. Biondi writes in the notes that it’s unsure if the concertos were written specifically for Prague, or perhaps, for audiences back home in Venice.

What’s interesting about naïve’s Vivaldi Edition (this release representing their fifty-seventh volume) is the label wasn’t content in using just one orchestra to record Vivaldi’s oeuvre. And there is an inherent risk in choosing different ensembles and soloists across their recordings; the interpretations will vary. Luckily, thus far at least, I have found this collection to offer high quality recordings and interpretations. The differences between performing groups offers diversity of artistic thought.

Biondi and Europa Galante are well-recorded and well-versed in the music of Vivaldi. It was good to have them as part of this project; their playing is consistent and in this release, the recorded sound is excellent. The orchestra is a small distance away and Biondi fills in the space between orchestra and audience with crystal-clear sound. This is my bias, but I like recordings that are captured closer, especially so with chamber-sized ensembles.

While Biondi’s reputation includes both fire and drama as ingredients in his performances, the histrionics across these six concerti (RV 282, 278, 380, 186, 288, and 330) is kept within check. The G minor concerto, RV 330, is a good example, in its opening first movement. A modern ensemble could most definitely exploit Vivaldi’s writing for more drama and fireworks; Biondi’s choices in tempo, dynamic extremes for the ensemble, and again for his own solos, are engaging without being overdone. His approach allows the music to speak for itself, but as Biondi almost always does, he adds rhythmic accents that have characterized his style for some time. This concerto is a particular challenge, too, for its high range in the solo part, and the performance is top-rate.

The E-minor concerto, RV 278, recalls Vivaldi’s interest in sea storms and could have been inserted into one of his operas. By the time the solo part arrives, the storm has calmed, but Biondi’s playing evokes the lilting crests of water at sea, or perhaps back home in Venice. A far-more dramatic reading of this concerto is to be found on the 2005 recording by Venice Baroque Orchestra (Concerto veneziano), led by Andrea Marcon and solo’ed by Giuliano Carmignola. I ended up much preferring the sound of Biondi and Europa Galante, but the earlier recording is no doubt worth an audition. Marcon and Carmignola are far more interested in exploiting drama within Vivaldi’s writing. While both interpretations are interesting, we’ll never know for sure how it may have sounded in Vivaldi’s time. So we have to be satisfied on how it sounds to us, now.

As an example, Biondi’s approach with the slow movement of the opening concerto, RV 282, is somewhat dry. The texture, as written, is spartan. Biondi captures our attention by relishing in his sound, there’s a real sweetness added as he warms the higher notes with a shimmer of vibrato. As an interpretation, it’s far removed from the style that became mainstream in the 1980s with Vivaldi recordings on period instruments. But I’d also point out that of the musical material Vivaldi provides, there is no interest, it seems, by Biondi to improvise or exploit the works for anything more, as is often now done with his opus eight collection of the Four Seasons. It is precisely the difference between the comparison I made in the preceding paragraph with Carmignola and Marcon. Amandine Beyer does offer a very different interpretation in her 2014 recording of the same concerto, on the album Teatro alla moda. And while it doesn’t go as far as Carmignola with interpretive liberties, it does serve to show the gamut of what can work in Vivaldi. While she completes the movement a minute ahead of Biondi, I too see the value in Biondi’s approach, giving the music its time.

To conclude, this “collection” of six concertos are not among Vivaldi’s most-oft recorded. Wordpress 2020 theme. As a set, it’s an excellent introduction to some of Vivaldi’s late solo concertos, which share writing in the higher range for the solo violin. Vivaldi’s invention is always ripe for different, yet equally-interesting interpretations. Biondi has approached these pieces with strong playing and the engineers from naïve have made a great recording.

I will say these may not be the most definitive readings. Beyond Beyer and Carmignola, versions of some of these concertos have been recorded elsewhere. But in every comparison, I’m proud to recognize the achievement of naïve’s engineers in capturing these works the most clearly, which helps to reveal the period instrument’s timbres in bright, aural light.

A couple of days ago all was working fine on my macOS 10.15.5 with VirtualBox 6.0.20. I have Windows10 and Ubuntu. Today I needed Windows and when started I got the Windows 'blue' screen saying that some critical system files were not found and it tried to repair itself, for no avail.

Then I tried Ubuntu, which simply didn't start and its status turned to 'Aborted' Making a long story short. I did a clean install of VirtualBox 6.1.10, used new and backed up VDI files for Windows and Linux. Created new VM re-using my VDI disks and tested, trying to look at the logs. It simply getting aborted whatever I try. I have no idea of what's going on. Looking at my log at

Step 1: Download The High Sierra Installer

To do this, you need to be on an existing macOS system. I was unable to find the download within the App Store itself, but following this link opened the App Store at the correct page: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/macos-high-sierra/id1246284741?mt=12

After opening the aforementioned page in the App Store, start the download, but cancel the installation when it starts.

You can then verify that the installer has been downloaded by checking that '/Applications/Install macOS High Sierra.app' exists.

During a recent pentest, I needed to throw together a macOS virtual machine. Although there was lots of guides around the web, none seemed to work from start to finish. This post contains the steps I extracted from various resources in order to get a fully working High Sierra install within VirtualBox 5. Step 1: Download The High Sierra Installer. Step 2: Create a Bootable ISO

Next, you need to create an ISO from the installer application that was downloaded in step 1.

Running the below commands will create an ISO on your desktop named HighSierra.iso:

Step 3: Creating the Virtual Machine

I experimented with a few different settings in regards to the CPU and RAM allocation. I didn’t find a combination that didn’t work, but create a VM with the following things in mind:

Ensure the name of the VM is MacOS (ensure to keep the same casing)

Ensure the type is Mac OS X and the version is macOS 10.12 Sierra (64-bit) (there is a High Sierra option too, but I chose Sierra by accident and it worked)

Untick Floppy in System > Motherboard > Boot Order

Use >= 4096 MB of memory in System > Motherboard

Use >= 2 CPUs in System > Processor

Use 128 MB of video memory in Display > Screen

Optionally enable 3D acceleration in Display > Screen

Remove the IDE device in Storage > Storage Devices and replace it with a SATA controller

Add a new hard disk device under the SATA controller with >= 60 GB of space

Ensure an optical drive is present under the SATA controller and mount the previously created ISO to it

Untick the Enable Audio option under Audio

After creating the virtual machine with the above configuration, hit OK and exit the settings screen. Now, a number of extra options need to be set.

If you’re on Windows, you’ll need to cd into the appropriate directory under the VirtualBox installation path to run VBoxManage. For Linux users, this should be in your PATH variable already:

After running the above commands, the VM should be ready to boot!

Step 4: Installation

This is where near enough everything I read stopped, despite there being one more problem in the way - UEFI.

Boot into the VM, go into Disk Utility and erase the virtual disk that you added to the machine. Biz stone.

After erasing the disk, start the installation procedure. After a short amount of time, it will reboot the VM.

Once it reboots, it’s going to boot back off the ISO again, once it’s done this, just shutdown the VM and eject the disk (the ISO) and then start the VM again to boot from disk.

On the next boot, it should boot into the installer that was copied to disk, but instead, you will be presented with a UEFI shell like below:

To continue the macOS installation, follow these steps:

Type exit and hit return

Select Boot Maintenance Manager and hit return

Select Boot From File and hit return

You will see two partitions, select the second partition and hit return

Select macOS Install Data and hit return

Select Locked Files and hit return

Select Boot Files and hit return

Select boot.efi and hit return

After following these steps, you will boot into the remainder of the macOS installation. From here, just follow the steps as per a regular macOS installation.

The next time you boot your virtual machine, you will not have to go through the UEFI shell; it should work without any further problems.

Step 5: Tweaking The Resolution

As there is no VirtualBox additions for macOS, the screen resolution won’t automatically change. If you know what resolution you wish to use, however, you can set it manually.

Ensure the virtual machine is powered off, and then run the following command; replacing 1920x1080 with whatever resolution you would like to use:

After running the above command, the next time you boot the machine, it will use the resolution specified.

Now, you should have a fully working macOS virtual machine!

Despite being lesser known today, tempera has a longer history than oil or acrylic paints.

Monks in the Middle Ages used tempera paint for illustrated manuscripts like the Book of Kells. Frescos (think of the Sistine Chapel) can also incorporate tempera paint. Oil paints hadn’t been invented yet.

What is Tempera Paint?

Tempera is a permanent, water-soluble paint mixed with an organic medium. In the past, painters used egg yolk as the medium, which is why you might have heard of “egg tempura.”

Today, tempera paint manufacturers often substitute egg yolk for other glutinous mediums. But to keep the paint non-toxic, manufacturers still stick with organic material.

Keepin’ it Organic

Organic material may be non-toxic, but this also means it will spoil over time. Just as it’s easy to tell when an egg has gone bad, you’ll know if your tempera paint has spoiled from the smell.

Fortunately, only liquid tempera is perishable. Once the paint has cured, tempera lasts for a very long time. Curing is different from drying. Once all the paint solvent has dissolved and only the coating or pigment is left, the paint is cured.

Like any paint, it’s best to store tempera in a cool, dry place and make sure the lid or cap is always secured. You should also avoid putting used paint back into its original container since it’s already been exposed to air.

The Real Stuff

The original tempera paints are available today as “egg tempera.” Egg tempera imitates the original egg yolk-based paint that the masters used. (I’m sure there are differences, but I’m not an art historian so these details are beyond me.)

Much of the confusion around tempera paint comes from the variety of paints labeled “tempera.” Most people know tempera as a kids’ poster paint. I’ll get into that later, but first I’ll focus on the benefits of using the original “egg tempera” paint.

Fast drying

Tempera paint dries quickly, posing the same conveniences and challenges of acrylic painting. Achieving a smooth, blended look can be tricky.

You’ll also need to get used to mixing your colors quickly. You won’t have the luxury of spending as long as you want to perfect your shades and tints like with oils.

Even though tempera dries quickly, the process for layering paint is more like oil. Each layer of paint needs time to dry and cure before you apply more paint on top.

Color, Color, Color!

If the color changing properties of acrylic frustrate you, you’ll appreciate tempera, which has no notable color changes in its lifespan.

Tempera doesn’t yellow over time like oil. The color doesn’t change as it dries, like acrylic. Nor it does turn more transparent over time, something I didn’t even know could happen to paintings.

This One’s for You, DIY-ers

If you have any interest in creating your own paints, tempera is a perfect choice. The ingredients are very simple ingredients and, with the exception of pigments, you can find them all at home.

You’ll need an egg, powdered pigments, and water. The Society of Tempera Painters has a quick guide to get you started.

The only drawback is that you can’t make large batches. Only create as much paint as you’ll need for that day, otherwise, your homemade tempera paint will start to smell.

The Cracks in the Facade

Besides being perishable, tempera paint may be starting to sound pretty good. But it has another challenge that you’ll need to address.

If you fooled around with tempera paints in your youth, you might remember how the paint would get kind of dusty as it dried and start to crack. To be honest, I thought this was pretty cool as a kid. I remember crinkling the paper on purpose to get the paint to crack. But I wasn’t losing any masterpieces.

When it dries, tempera paint can feel brittle and chalky. To prevent cracking, you need to choose the right painting surface and monitor your paint’s thickness.

Picky on the Surface

Tempera paint requires a rigid surface. If you apply tempera to a thin, flexible material, you face a high chance of flaking and cracking. Painting on paper spells nearly certain doom for your painting unless you’re intentionally looking for cracks. Even painting on canvas can result in cracks and flakes.

Of course, there are artists who make tempera on paper work. They might do some extra priming or have a super secret technique. But if it’s your first time using tempera, I’d recommend a wooden board or panel primed with gesso.

Layer Thickness

Tempera also requires thin layers of paint. It’s very different from oil in this respect, so if you’re used to oil painting techniques, tempera will require some adjustment. Tempera becomes brittle as it dries, making it unable to support thick layers.

It’s not suited for impasto (applying paint directly from the tube), knife painting, or thick, textured strokes. Instead, you’ll need to build up thin layers to avoid cracking.

Tempera Paint: The Child’s Medium

The most well-known type of tempera paint is probably poster paint. You’ll find this paint at nearly any big box store in the kids’ arts and crafts section.

Tempera paint is a popular choice as a kids’ paint because it’s non-toxic, very fluid and able to cover a lot of ground, cheap, and washable.

Tempera’s organic material makes it safe for kids, even if when ingested. Of course, I wouldn’t encourage any paint consumption.

Although the paint was traditionally made with eggs, many manufacturers who produce child tempera paint today use a substitute. So almost any tempera poster paint you find will most likely be egg-free and it’s safe for children with egg allergies.

Tempera paint works well for both crafts and finger painting.

What’s the difference between finger paint and tempera paint?

Common finger paints are non-toxic and may use a special formula with extra benefits. Some might claim that they don’t stain your fingers or fingernails. Others might include moisturizing agents to prevent your skin from drying out. But I’m not up to date on the latest finger paint technology, so I couldn’t verify any of these claims.

But tempera paint is just as safe and convenient for kids as finger paint. Tempera also has the benefit of being more versatile. Use it for regular painting or the finger variety.

Realistically, there probably isn’t much difference between a paint like this Crayola Finger Paint and a Washable Kids’ Tempera Paint. The Crayola does claim that it will not crack or rub off a surface, which if true would be a benefit over tempera. Unless your kids like the cracked paint look. Which they might.

Why Use Tempera Paint over Acrylic?

People tend to be more familiar with acrylic than tempera. So what’s the verdict? Is one better than the other? The answer is either “not particularly” or “it depends.”

Acrylic might be easier to use. It does let you use a wide variety of techniques, including thick and textured layers.

Tempera has a color advantage over both acrylic and oil paints. While some might say that oil paints give a richer color – okay, I certainly have that impression – there’s something nice about the consistency of tempera paint. The colors remain pretty much exactly as you placed them onto the surface. But know that you’ll need to use a high-quality egg tempera paint to get this color quality.

When done correctly – on a rigid surface and with thin layers – tempera has a nicer finish than acrylic, and looks less plastic-like. But if you want to paint on unconventional surfaces, acrylic might be the better choice.
