Gender equity in the workplace
This blog will discuss the gender equity of men and women for their pay in the workplace. It will also include some strategies to avoid the inequity of pay between two gender and some other issues for women in the workplace. The term gender refers to the economic, social, and cultural attributes and opportunities associated with being male or female. In most societies, being a man or woman is not simply a matter of different biological and physical characteristics. Gender equality at workplace refers to equal rights, responsibilities and opportunities of women and men in employment (UN 2013). Gender equality implies that the recognizing the diversity of different groups of women and men. Equality between women and men is seen both as a human rights issue and as a precondition for and indicator of sustainable people centered development. The gendered stereotypes that have been enforced regarding the role of women over the years and the action of others who have an influence on their progression in the workplace have led to problem such as glass ceiling and gender pay gap.
It is true that the salary of men is higher than women despite they have same role to do at workplace. In Scholley Bubenik’s article, she mentioned that in 2017, female employees made only 80.5 cents for every dollar earned by men. This difference constitutes a twenty percent gap in wages between male and female employees.1 She also mentioned some ways to narrow wedge gaps by conducting an annual review of the compensation of each employee within the organization.1 (Bubenik, 2019). In video “Women vs men, in the workplace” (2019), highlights the ratio of pay inequity for men and women in the workplace. Pay in Canada
Minimum wage in Canada is different throughout the country, in Ontario it is $14.25 and in Quebec it is $13.20, and the list goes on (The Canadian Payroll Association, 2020). It is seen that depending on where you live in Canada there will be a difference in how you are being paid. There is no difference when it comes to men and women being paid in Canada, men being seen as the more hard-working people and the women being seen as the more laid-back workers is quiet a statement that is both not true at all but in reality men are being paid more.
Men
The inequality in pay between men and women all started in 1998 when men were being paid $5.17 more than women. Being a man in Canada you would have no problem when it comes to pay, in 2018 if you were ages 25 to 54 you would be paid a substantial amount more than women coming at $4.13 more. Also, men were usually working the full time shifts when female would work part-time, this is one of the reasons why men had an increase in wage (Statistics Canada, 2019).
Women
Women have been fighting for equality for some time now and still there is no change. As of today, women are being paid “$0.87 cents for every dollar that men make”. The scales of being paid are different when you are an indigenous woman, a woman with disability, racialized woman and women who are new to Canada, men are still being paid more (Refinery29, 2020). In 2018 nearly two-thirds of why there is a pay gap was unexplained and still there is no explanation (Statistics Canada, 2019).
