This article was interesting which discussed how the one-child policy in China is gone although women now faces new challenges. Some were trying to find jobs and in these jobs advertisements, they listed that they want women who have already had children. Women also reported that they were asked about their childbearing status during job interviews. Employers can impose punishments on employees who become pregnant. Sometimes the women is forced to resign or is fired due to pregnancy. China's constitution guarantees equal rights between men and women. Although they have laws that ban gender and pregnancy based discrimination in employment their isn't specific enformencent mechanisms. This is a violation of their rights and this is unfair treatment to the women in the workplace.

Biden gave a speech to mark the Memorial day on Sunday. Biden discussed how he will not allow Putin to continue to abuse those rights. Biden announced that he was imposing new sanctions against Russia. This was due to the 2020 hack known as the SolarWinds breach. US has accused of Putin for authorizing influence operations to help Trump in his re-election. Although Russia denied involvement in SolarWinds hack. The tension between Russia and US has increased over to Ukraine also. This was due to Biden accusing Moscow of provocation over Russian military along the border with eastern Ukraine.

Australia and New Zealand have expressed concerns over the human rights situation in Xinjiang. Both the prime ministers from Australia and New Zealand are calling on Beijing to respect the human rights of the Uyghur people and other Muslim minorities. They also want to grant the UN and other observes unfettered access to the region. I think that this issue has gone far too long. Nothing seems to been going on while Xinjiang continued to violate the human rights of the Uyghur people. Seeing that other countries are stepping in is a good sign to stop this human right violation. Do you think more will be done by to stop China from violating the human rights of the Uyghur people/other minorities?

Thia authorities are punishing outspoken children with lese majeste charges; insulting the monarchy. The Thia government is showing that regardless of their age they will be punished. On May 24, 2021 a 17-year old in the Central Juvenile and Family Court was charged with the lese majeste charges in his speech at a pro-democracy rally. He will face anywhere between 3 to 15 years if they find him guilty. Thailand is making it clear that they don't want anything democratic or be a democratic country as such they are charging lese majeste even to children. These children have been charged regardless of peacefully exercising their freedom of expression and assembly rights. This is a violation of human rights although it doesn't look like Thia authorities will change anything because they are suppressing views of democratic reforms.

I wasn't aware of this news but I found this interesting. This news article talks about Roman Protasevich. He was flying a jet from Greece to Lithuania and diverted to Minsk. Therefore, Roman Protasevich was taken from the jurisdiction of another state and brought within that of Belarus. Although the diversion that happens was under false pretenses and now they fear that he will be tortured. They have requested the release of Roman Protasevich. Rupert Colville an OHCHR spokesperson has stated that there should be a peaceful assembly. Although Colville fears that this situation might be escalated. The forced landing of the plane also terrorized the passengers on board and exposed them to danger which is a human rights violation. We will see what continues to happen, although do you think they will release Protasevich?

The Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights stated that the UK government's interception of communication powers isn't safeguarded to provide guarantees against arbitrariness. Therefore, this was found to violate the rights of privacy of the citizens. This includes millions of people's private communications. They also stated that the states can't delegate the power to authorize surveillance to the executive branch. This violates the trust of the citizens in the government also because we expect the government to respect the right of privacy towards the citizen and their freedom of expression, although this doesn't seem to be the case. They also found that UK intelligence agencies have had unlawful spies on the communication of Amnesty International. This further shows the violation that the UK has been doing.

Human Rights Watch has said that China has committed crimes against humanity against Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang. There has been torture, mass detention, cultural perceptions, and many other offenses against Turkic Muslims. There has been a 53-page report from Stanford Law School's Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Clinic that points out the range of abuses against Turkic Muslims. In this article, they state that crimes against humanity are the gravest human rights abuses. With it being the gravest, I often see that action doesn't happen as quickly as you might think. The Chinese government hasn't stopped these crimes which is what is demanding international action. Even with China being a powerful state, how much longer do these people have to suffer until we can see any improvement in the conditions, especially considering that these are crimes against humanity!

All of us have heard about the recent events between Israel and Palestinian. I think this is important to address as the issues are indeed involving human rights. The situation between Israel and Palestinian have escalated in matter of weeks where there is armed conflict between the two forces. The death rate has increased with many killed and this therefore brings international law in the discussion. There is human rights violations and unlawful attacks going on that are not permitted. The UN Human Rights Council has stepped in to help ensure the accountability for violations even in the case of a ceasefire. In this session, they have to discuss the reasons why the conflict are arising and understand the cause of the blockade of Gaza and the forced eviction of Palestinian families.

Iran Slams EU Sanctions, Calls Out Human Rights Violations
https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2021/4/24/iran-slams-eu-sanctions-calls-out-human-rights-violations
Iran has protested against the blacklisting of several individuals. The High Council of Human Rights of Iran has written a letter discussing the European double standards on human rights in Iran. The EU has blacklisted 89 individuals and four entities as part of the human rights sanctions against those who are saying there are human rights violations in Iran. Iran's foreign ministry said it will immediately suspend their discussion with the EU on human rights and therefore allow for cooperation. Although it seems the sanctions have intensified only after COVID-19. I think it is interesting to look into both sides and see what is being done. Especially looking at how the EU is stating that they want to help although Iran has been dealing with the refusal of European countries that refuse to help with Iranian firms on medicine and vaccines. There is a lot in this article although those were a few of the main points that I found really interesting.
