I can’t think of another actress who has ushered more boys through puberty than Lynda Carter, but it wasn’t just how good she looked in that costume it was how effortless charming and sweet she was. She may have had the power to pick the back end of a car up, or toss Nazis around like tinker toys, but she never took herself too seriously, and certainly never lorded her strength and ability over anyone else. She truly was the first comic depiction that looked like she stepped right out of the comic book and as the opening narration by President Roosevelt states, “The only hope for freedom and democracy is…” As mentioned the pilot, and ABC’s first season, takes place during World War II and so the show’s villains would of course be the Nazis. Right out of the gate we are introduced to Colonel Von Blasko (Kenneth Mars) a top Nazi officer who is orchestrating a plan to destroy a top secret American installation that is manufacturing a superior bomb targeting device. To carry out this dastardly mission is Captain Drangel (Eric Braeden), who sneers more than Snidely Whiplash, but lucky for America Von Blasko’s aide decamp Nikolas (Henry Gibson) is a spy working for Washington and he is able to send out information via messenger pigeon to warn of the upcoming attack. When authorities in Washington DC learn of this Major Steve Trevor (Lyle Waggoner) is quickly dispatched by General Blankenship (John Randolph) to intercept Drangel, and after a brutal dogfight which results in both planes being destroyed, our hero is shot and wounded by Dragel as they both float down into the Bermuda Triangle.

ABC’s special effects budget clearly went into Lynda Carter’s costume and not here.

Steve Trevor is shot, in what looks like the heart, but before Drangel can gloat too long his parachute drops him in the middle of a pool of hungry sharks. Miraculously Trevor is washed ashore without being eaten, you’d think a bleeding man would have attracted at least of few of those sharks eating Drangel, but as in most cases he is able to pull the “Hero Death Exemption Card” and he safely arrives on the beach of Paradise Island. How do we know this is a paradise?

Because the occupants look like this and run around in Baby Doll nighties.

It’s here we meet Princess Diana (Lynda Carter), who immediately becomes fascinated with this hunk of a man, and despite her mother Queen Hippolyta’s (Cloris Leachman) objections she does her best to spend time with the wounded airman. The Queen, afraid of this man’s corrupting influence on their idyllic paradise, orders the man be returned back to his own world, and because a chance to see the outside world is something most of the Amazons would desire they hold a contest to decide who gets the honor. The Queen refuses to let her daughter enter so Diana is forced to enter the contest in disguise, and the fact that this plan works is a bit of a stretch as I doubt a blonde wig and a domino mask would fool anyone as there appears to be only a couple dozen Amazons on this entire island, and being the residents of the island are immortal and thousands of years old you’d think the Princess’s face would be as recognizable as your own by this point. Regardless the contest ends in a tie and as ancient Amazonian tradition dictates the only way the deadlock can be broken is with “Bullets and Bracelets.” Wait…what the hell is that? All of the events of this contest had been mostly traditional Olympic events; javelin, discus throwing, hurdles, and archery but all of a sudden we learn a tie can only be broken by contestants shooting at each other with guns. According to the Queen, “Only women have the necessary speed and coordination to attempt Bullets and Bracelets without the loss of life.” So that's all women and not just Amazons? If that’s truly the case how come this has event never appeared in any Miss America or Miss Universe Contest?

And where exactly did these Amazons get a set of revolvers?

Even if they acquired these weapons from one of the countless ships or planes that have gone missing in the Bermuda Triangle (I’m going to assume the Amazons didn’t just happen to event identical modern weapons), why would they use something of man’s world which the Queen finds so distasteful? Sure this is all to set up Wonder Woman’s ability to deflect bullets but here it seems so anachronistic, regardless of the weirdness of the contest Diana of course wins and she is given the job to return Steve Trevor to America.

Before she leaves she is outfitted with a golden belt which we are told is, “A symbol of Amazon supremacy and so long as you wear it you will retain your cunning and strength away from Paradise Island.” It’s here that the show alludes to an Amazon possibly losing her powers and becoming human when away from Paradise Island, and later in the series she does seem quite mortal when not in costume. She is also giving the Lasso of Truth and a kick ass costume that the Queen explains the reason behind her design choices being, “The Colors were chosen to show your allegiance to freedom and democracy. The skirt can be discarded if it becomes too cumbersome.”

Note: The skirt is a nod to her original costume in the comics but once it came off the Networks never wanted to see her back in it.

After dropping Steve Trevor at a Washington DC hospital, much to the consternation of the duty nurse, Wonder Woman proceeds to wander around town where her skimpy attire attracts much attention, and we get a nice “fish out of water” moment when she learns that something called “money” is required to get things. This problem is kind of fixed when she is spotted beating up a bunch of bank robbers, deflecting their bullets with her bracelets, tossing a couple of them around with ease, and lifting the back of a car up to keep them from escaping, by Ashley Norman (Red Buttons) a crooked theatrical agent who will also turn out to be a Nazi spy.

Not Superman level of strength, but still pretty impressive.

We do get a bit of forced conflict when Steve Trevor’s secretary Marcia (Stella Stevens) is revealed to be a Nazi spy as well and when she learns that Steve Trevor didn’t die in the aerial battle with Captain Drangel she phones one of her Nazi operatives to tell him, “Steve Trevor is alive, apparently some woman is responsible, and she must be found and stopped.” So some random woman drops off a wounded American officer at a nearby hospital and suddenly that makes her a top enemy of the Third Reich? That's got to be one of the reason they lost the war, lack of priorities. This does lead to one of my favorite moments in the entire run of the series; while performing for Ashley Norman at a local theatre she is to show off her amazing deflecting bullet trick, with audience members being allowed to come up and take shots at her, and an old lady approaches carrying an old carpet bag and asks if it’s okay if she uses her own gun, she then pulls out a Thompson machine gun.

Beware old ladies with carpet bags.

Of course the little old lady had arrived with Marcia so we know her to be a Nazi agent as well, and it’s at this point you start to wonder if most of the population of Washington DC was going to turn out to be members of the Third Reich. Lucky for the Allied war effort Steve Trevor finally awakens from his Paradise Island induced coma, square jawed and ready to fight, and when he learns that Colonel Von Blasko himself has taken over the job to bomb the Brooklyn Naval Yard he leaps into action. Unfortunately he informs Marcia of his route and soon he finds himself captured by her Nazi confederates. They drug Trevor with truth serum to get the combination of the safe that contains the plans for the newfangled bomb sight, but when Marcia goes to retrieve it she runs into Wonder Woman. This results in a rather long and brutal fight that goes through office doors, down hallways and through more glass doors, and it really last much longer than one would assume a fight consisting of one Amazon and one average woman. And I don’t care if Marcia claims to know judo.

Didn’t we just see Wonder Woman pick up the back of a car and toss dudes around like toys?

Are hero is able to thwart the Nazi plans by intercepting and capturing Colonel Von Blasko with her invisible plane, while sending his bomber crashing into the German U-Boat that had been sent to pick up the fifth columnists, and then she races back to the city to punch some more Nazi spies and rescue Steve. I key element in the first season is Steve Trevor becoming the defacto “Damsel in Distress” and my hat goes off to Lyle Wagner for taking the job where many a fragile male ego would have balked.

For a 70s action show this was a little daring.

The pilot movie ends with Steve Trevor declaring to General Blankenship, after learning his secretary was the ringleader of the Nazi spies, that “At least I’ve learned one good thing; from now on I’m going to have an ordinary secretary.” Blankenship had anticipated this and he hired a woman who, “Scored well in all the office aptitude tests but she’s duller than a fat lap dog after dinner.” They have a good chuckle over that and Trevor states, “Good. I’ve had it up to here with pretty girls.” In the office we meet Wonder Woman in her new guise as Diana Prince, with glasses we assume she powered from Clark Kent.

So this is 70s television's version of not pretty?

Much of this show’s success is due to producer Douglas S. Cramer going out on a limb in casting the relative unknown Lynda Carter in the title role of a fairly expensive series (looking the part was obvious but could she carry a show?) and though the pilot did dance very close to camp at times it never crossed the line into self-parody as was the case in the 60s Batman show. Of course the reason the show worked as well as it did was because of how earnest and honest Lynda Carter’s portrayal of Wonder Woman was. No matter what insane thing was asked of her she pulled it all off with aplomb. In this pilot she played the “straight man” to some of the top comics ever assembled; her leading man had just come off the Carol Burnett Show

, Red Buttons was a comic legend, Henry Gibson an ever popular Laugh-In regular, and Kenneth Mars who played the Hitler loving playwright in the Mel Brooks comedy The Producers.

A case of nice comic stunt casting.

The 70s television Wonder Womanwith Lynda Carter is to me still a benchmark in translating comic books from page to screen, and even when it moved CBS and they shifted the series to the present day it never lost the core of what Wonder Woman stood for. Not to mention it had one kick ass theme song.

Wonder Woman, American comic book heroine created for DC Comics by psychologist William Moulton Marston (under the pseudonym Charles Moulton) and artist Harry G. Peter. Wonder Woman first appeared in a backup story in All Star Comics no. 8 (December 1941) before receiving fuller treatment in Sensation Comics no. 1 (January 1942) and Wonder Woman no. 1 (June 1942). She perennially ranked as one of DC’s most-recognizable characters and a feminist icon.

Marston was something of a maverick in the scientific community, and he is credited with inventing a precursor of the modern lie detector. He practiced polygyny, he believed that women would rise up to lead the world into a new and peaceful age, and one of Marston’s longtime partners was the niece of family-planning pioneer Margaret Sanger. These details, as well as Marston’s long affiliation with the woman suffrage movement, were obvious influences in the creation of Wonder Woman.

Origin in the Golden Age

The details of Wonder Woman’s origin have changed many times over the years, but the basic premise has remained largely the same. U.S. Air Force pilot Steve Trevor’s plane crashes on the uncharted Paradise Island, home of the legendary Amazons. The raven-haired Princess Diana finds Trevor, and the Amazons nurse him back to health. A tournament is held to determine who will take the pilot back to “Man’s World,” but Diana is forbidden to enter. Disguising herself, she engages in the games, winning them and being awarded the costume of Wonder Woman. Diana takes Trevor back to the United States in her invisible plane, and she adopts the secret identity of Diana Prince. As Prince, she soon becomes Trevor’s assistant, and Trevor—much like a gender-reversed Lois Lane—never realizes that his coworker and the superhero who consistently comes to his rescue are the same person.

In her first 40 years of adventures, Wonder Woman wore a distinctive red bodice with a gold eagle, a blue skirt with white stars (quickly replaced by blue shorts with stars), red boots with a white centre stripe and upper edge, a gold belt and tiara, and bracelets on each wrist. The bracelets could deflect bullets or other missiles, and hanging from her belt was a magic golden lasso, which compelled anyone bound by it to tell the truth or obey her commands. Among her powers were prodigious strength and speed, near invulnerability to physical harm, and formidable combat prowess. On some occasions, she also displayed the ability to converse with animals.

Wonder Woman was popular with readers for many reasons. For a nation engulfed in World War II, her unwavering patriotism was welcome. Male readers enjoyed the adventures of a scantily clad woman who was drawn in the style of one of Esquire magazine’s Varga Girl pinups and who was often tied up by male or female villains. Critics—most notably anti-comics polemicist Frederic Wertham—would call attention to the preponderance of bondage in Wonder Woman stories, but Marston claimed such scenes to be allusions to suffragist imagery. (This defense strained credibility, however, as the concept of “loving submission” to authority was pervasive throughout both Wonder Woman comics and Marston’s personal life.) Female readers liked the series because it presented a strong and confident woman who often spoke about the power of womanhood and the need for female solidarity. In an industry where superheroines tended to be used for cheesecake titillation or as adjuncts to their more powerful and popular male counterparts, Wonder Woman stood apart.

Unlike Superman or Batman, the other members of what would come to be known as DC’s “trinity,” Wonder Woman would never develop an especially memorable gallery of villains. Among her persistent foes were the catlike Cheetah, the towering Giganta, the sorceress Circe, and the telepath Dr. Psycho, whose mental powers were a sinister inversion of Marston’s “loving submission” credo. Besides appearing in her own two titles, Wonder Woman was a featured member of the Justice Society of America in the pages of All Star Comics.

The Silver Age and television success

Marston wrote Wonder Woman until his death in May 1947, with Peter providing the art during most of that time. Robert Kanigher succeeded Marston as writer in 1948, but the popularity of superhero comics had sharply declined in the postwar years. The heroine last appeared with the Justice Society in All Star Comics no. 57 (February 1951), and she was dropped from Sensation Comics after no. 106 (December 1951). Sensation was subsequently turned into a horror anthology to capitalize on that genre’s surging popularity, leaving her bimonthly series as the sole Wonder Woman title. Peter was replaced by artists Ross Andru and Mike Esposito, among others.

Kanigher had a flair for the outrageous, and he introduced many elements into the Wonder Woman mythos that rattled longtime readers. These included adventures featuring a younger Wonder Woman (as Wonder Girl and Wonder Tot), romantic suitors such as Merman and Birdman (and their youthful counterparts Mer-Boy and Bird-Boy), and bizarre villains like Angle Man, Paper-Man, and a sentient egg (and obvious “yellow peril” stereotype) known as Egg Fu. Resistance from fans would lead Kanigher to take the unorthodox step of writing himself, Andru, and Esposito into Wonder Woman no. 158 (November 1965), so he could personally “fire” the supporting cast that he had introduced and restore Wonder Woman to her “Golden Age” roots.

Outside of her own title, Wonder Woman appeared as a founding member of the Justice League of America in The Brave and the Bold no. 28 (February-March 1960). In 1968 Kanigher left Wonder Woman, and creative duties were taken over by writer Denny O’Neil and artists Mike Sekowsky and Dick Giordano. In Wonder Woman no. 178 (October 1968), Diana Prince was stripped of her superpowers and costume, and she became an undercover adventure heroine in the model of Emma Peel from the television series The Avengers. Feminist leader Gloria Steinem featured the heroine in her classic costume on the cover of the July 1972 debut issue of Ms. magazine, and Wonder Woman’s profile grew dramatically during the 1970s. Shortly after her appearance in Ms., Wonder Woman regained her powers and costume, and the classic depiction of the hero played a prominent role in ABC’s hit animated series Super Friends (1973–86). In 1975 Lynda Carter debuted as the title character in the live action Wonder Woman. The statuesque former beauty queen so perfectly embodied the Amazon princess that, although the show ran for just three seasons, Carter would become the face of the character for a generation. Early scripts tended to be very faithful to the World War II-era comics, while later episodes, moving the time frame to the 1970s, were less faithful to their progenitors.

In the early months of 2011, more than a decade after he first began work in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Sir Ian McKellen returned to Wellington to play the wizard Gandalf the Grey once again. He'd had his reservations about reprising his role: legal entanglements and union actions had delayed the production for years, and McKellen, at 71, was far from certain that he wanted to be tied up in filming halfway around the world from his home in London. And this time, in the first of director Sir Peter Jackson's two projected prequels based on Tolkien's The Hobbit, the part would be more technically demanding. Gandalf would spend most of his time surrounded by diminutive characters – hobbits and dwarfs half his height – but as they were played by actors of ordinary proportions, the film-maker would have to employ an arsenal of special effects to make their world seem convincing. Some were surprisingly simple: in long shots, Gandalf could stand close to the camera and a hobbit farther away, using forced perspective to make one seem larger than the other. But in close-ups things became more difficult. So, to film an inaugural dinner party in Bilbo Baggins' underground home, McKellen found himself sitting alone in a scaled-down set representing Bilbo's 'hobbit hole', as 13 actors playing hobbits sat in a full-sized version of the same set on the other side of the studio. They would all play the same scene simultaneously to a pair of cameras, and the shots could be overlaid in post-production. But McKellen could neither see nor hear the other actors, instead having their dialogue read to him through an earpiece, and faced a phalanx of photographs on stands that lit up when each character spoke, to help guide his reactions to their lines. To further complicate matters, the pictures he had to respond to were not of the characters in make-up, covered with layers of prosthetics, but of the actors beneath, none of whom he had ever met before. 'This is my first day of shooting,' he tells me. 'I don't know who they are. I can't hear what's being said. I don't know who's speaking to me. I don't know what they're looking at. I'm acting in a vacuum.' By the end of the day – alone with his earpiece, his miniaturised cutlery and his faces on sticks, watched by only a robot camera – McKellen grew tearful with frustration. 'This,' he muttered to himself, 'isn't why I became an actor.' That night, he offered to quit. In spite of his various honours – a CBE in 1979, the knighthood in 1992 – McKellen remains famously informal. When I arrive at the sprawling penthouse apartment where he's staying in Manhattan, while appearing in Waiting for Godot and Harold Pinter's No Man's Land with his friend and fellow X-Men star Patrick Stewart, his assistant is surprised. 'Oh, s***,' he observes. 'He's asleep.' It's noon on a Monday, and McKellen's day off. The previous night, he hosted a party here for 100 guests that didn't finish until 5am; the interview has been forgotten. An hour later, a freshly showered McKellen is still waking up. The living room of the apartment has been set with vases of fresh flowers; on the mantelpiece is the certificate registering McKellen as a minister in the Unification Church, something Stewart's new wife, Sunny, organised, so that he could officiate at their wedding in September. McKellen has no confidence that his online ordination has any legitimacy. 'We may find out that Patrick and Sunny are not really married at all, and it will all be my fault,' he muses. 'Hmm.' As he waits for his breakfast to appear, McKellen's distinctively theatrical delivery is even more stately than usual. He eats an apple, rubs at his face and digs in his ear with one arm of his spectacles. 'Monday is my Sunday. I'd just got it into my mind that I didn't have anything on today,' he says. 'Anyway. 'Because Gandalf and Magneto are rather imposing characters, people don't take advantage of you. They're a little bit in awe, in a way that they wouldn't be if they saw a friendly face from Coronation Street. People on television have trouble with fame, because audiences think they're their mates.' Yet McKellen apparently does an excellent job of being famous. He's maintained a voluminous personal website (which he says he writes for in place of producing an autobiography) since long before the invention of social media, and has a game and sometimes self-deprecating public persona – swigging advocaat on British television show Chatty Man or baking brownies with Martha Stewart – that seems particularly winning in a knight of his generation. I apologize, as someone may have already asked this question since you covered this material weeks or even months ago, but I looked in the forums and I couldn't find a similar thread. I've just been rereading, or more correctly re-listening, to the first chapters of the Fellowship of the Ring, and something struck me, which I had never noticed before. It is this line:

'I endured him as long as I could, but the truth was desperately important, and in the end I had to be harsh. I put the fear of fire on him, and wrung the true story out of him, bit by bit, together with much sniveling and snarling.' (Gandalf, Book One, Chapter One: The Shadow of the Past, FoTR) ​

Gandalf is explaining to Frodo how he discovered the true story of Gollum's life. I've read FoTR many times, but I never paid very close attention to this particular passage. Does it mean what I think it means? Is Gandalf actually suggesting that he threatened to torture or actually did torture

Gollum in order to learn the truth? 'I put the fear of fire on him,' does suggest, taken in the most positive way possible, at least a threat, even if it is an empty one. However the following phrase 'and wrung the true story out of him, bit by bit,' makes it seem like he actually carried out his threat.

I find this very hard to meld with my own mental image of Gandalf: a fundamentally compassionate and empathetic person who would never condone torture. If we take this passage as a suggestion that he actually did torture Gollum, it seems like he is willing to put aside his own moral scruples for the good of the world at large since the information he needs is 'desperately important.' Indeed it is vital for the continuation of Middle Earth as we know it, but I still find it hard to believe that Gandalf, pupil of Nienna, the Vala of pity, grief, and compassion, would ever resort to torture.

If you look in the right places, there are more solid copies of NR2003 that can be downloaded and used, seems MyAbandonware's version has flaws. I do not use this copy of the game and got mine elsewhere, however, I will give you instructions that should allow to play the game. If you're using an iso, just get WinCDEmu, a very simple not shady program that makes virtual iso drives, works like a charm. After mounting, run the installer, or if you really want to, run autorun and then open the installer for that burst of nostalgia when it comes to getting a new game from the 2000s. Run the installer like normal, when you get to the much needed key, there is a universal one that is in all copies. Depending on the OS, you must go over to compatibility settings and set it to Windows XP, on modern systems, the game will shut down right after the cut scenes. If you're still having issues, you may have to disable Data Execution Prevention, also known as DEP, which may require you to enter the BIOS and turn it off. This game was Papyrus' swan song to NASCAR after EA Sports got the exclusive rights to the sport. In retaliation, Papyrus released the popular 1.2.0.1 patch that allowed you to mod the game as you please. Since then, NR2003 is still used widely to this day and is figured more of a free version of iRacing since the source code is the core of it. The modding community, while somewhat infamous, is what keeps this game alive. EA would throw away their license after 2009, 6 years later after releasing more and more disappointing releases since NASCAR Thunder 2004. For any racing fan, and any guy who likes making art and tinkering around with game code, this is the game for you, this game is bar none compared to the rest. Have fun with this game, I enjoy it immensely.

Ok this is Fun! Patch the game first (1201) then use the CD patch (1201) for it. Ignore the 1.0 version NOCD file! Nglide (www.zeus-software.com/downloads/nglide) is how you then get it to work on Win7 and up.

Our lab has a Biomek FX 'Laboratory Automation Workstation' and I'm going to need to program it.

What we need done is basically moving/combining samples from arbitrary wells in several 96-well plates to arbitrary wells in a 24-well plate, for several plates. (The point of all this is combinatorial pooling with error-correcting binary codes for deepseq samples, not that it matters). I already have a python script that defines all the steps that need to happen (i.e. which source plate well needs to go into which destination plate wells), I just need to figure out the correct format for a Biomek file with the same information. I know the Biomek has an option of loading a file that will tell it what to do, but the manual is pretty long-winded and confusing to read from the point of view of someone who doesn't need to know how to use machine, just to make the file.

Has anyone here done this? Is there an example file you could give me?

I can't see the qualitative difference between this question and a question about converting Illumina NGS file formats between different encodings or writing code to pull down a particular chunk of the UCSC database. A lot of questions posted on this site and considered within bounds are not research topics; they're extremely specific requests for help with a practical engineering problem that arose from a bioinformatics analysis. I still think there's a long way between those tasks and installing printer drivers. (And my thanks to those whose main job is installing printer drivers).

If someone else wants to reopen, go ahead. Personally, I think that when we define bioinformatics as 'anything with a plug' (as one of my colleagues says), it devalues the subject and strengthens the perception that what we provide is little more than IT support.

As this is a very specific commercial platform, I doubt you will get a useful answer here. You'll have more luck with (a) reading the manual properly or (b) sending a support request to your supplier.

Perhaps adding a definition of what is considered bioinformatics to the FAQ would be useful to prevent this kind of confusion, then. Still, I think a question about programming, not just using or fixing, a complicated biology-specific machine is pretty far from 'anything with a plug'. And yes, I'm aware my chances of getting an answer aren't high, but I thought it was worth asking. If I don't get anything, I'll post the information myself once I figure it out, and maybe someone else will find it useful someday.

We have several Fx stations at our site... but why on earth do you directly want to python program it? The accompanied Beckmann programming FX software has so far fullfilled all our needs. Maybe my ignorance...

We're doing 'combinatorial pooling' - basically we need to program it to combine samples into larger pools in a complicated and non-regular way. Luckily it can take simple plaintext input that defines all the operation, so I can generate that file in python, I just needed to figure out the format (unsurprisingly it didn't turn out very complicated).
