Despite the fact that her secret identity had just been quite rudely exposed, Tasha remained defiant and annoyed.  She didn’t even register the mercy of how she had been brought closer to the ground as she dropped from the armor.  It didn’t help that the fall still jarred her bones.  Lifting her chin defiantly, she glared at him as if she still had all the power of her suit behind her.
“Of course I’m not HYDRA.  I’m Iron Man.  Haven’t you heard of me?  The Avengers?  The attack on New York!? Come on!  I’m famous!”  She felt like stomping her foot and throwing a real fit, it just wasn’t fair that this man seemed to have no idea who she was after spending all that time building up her reputation as a hero.
“I came because I was alerted to the attack.  I was the first of my team to suit up.  The rest of them will be here shortly, so don’t think you’re getting away.  Whoever you are, you’re going to have a lot of explaining to do.  Like why are you attacking Hydra?  Where did you come from?  And your power….you control metal, right?  How did you get that ability?”  She continued to talk as if she were the one in control of the situation, and not the one left vulnerable.
Tumblr media
Erik’s face remained neutral and just for a moment, brief as it was, he wished that Charles was beside him, if only because his old friend would have been able to parse the truth from the lies.  He didn’t know who Iron Man was, or the Avengers for that matter.  As far as he knew, there had been no attack on New York, but then, he supposed he was rather out of time.  Everything was so much faster now, so much noisier.  Humans were even more dangerous.  But they had even more metal around them now.  It was far easier for him to flick his powers and kill them.  That went a long way to soothing his nerves.
“Hydra slaughtered my people.  They ventured to close to my charges, and I would not abide by them encroaching upon my duties.”  It was explanation enough, he supposed, even if it was not entirely accurate, but then, the mansion was weaker.  And while he would slaughter any human who tried to recreate the horrors he had seen in his childhood, he harbored no illusions about being invincible, or worse, that Charles would not come into the crossfire, as he had before.
Almost in spite of himself, the metal drifted closer to him, protective, and he eyed the woman for a long moment, weighing things out, analyzing.  “I am a mutant,” he stated simply.  “You surprise me.  I would have thought most of you would not have forgotten the man who curved bullets to kill your beloved president.”  Not that he had killed John F. Kennedy - he had tried to save the man, but he had failed and been blamed for it.  It was how they remembered him.  And if that was what they wished to paint him as, so be it.  He didn’t care for their opinion.  They were only human.

Tasha had been monitoring the construction of the Hydra base for quite awhile.  She had been alerted to their presence by Jarvis.  In fact, she had been using their little operation to gather information about the larger operations that Hydra was involved in.  Of course, this was all information that she was planning to put forth to the Avengers, although none of her teammates knew about her project.  She didn’t think Cap would approve of her letting a Hydra base operate.
In any case, it was quite disturbing when she got the call that someone was laying waste to her pet Hydra goons.  Getting into the suit and taking off, she tried to figure out who it could be.  The Avengers hadn’t gotten an alert, so it had to be an unfriendly.  But who was a public enemy and against Hydra?
Swooping toward the base she was just starting to scan the area when her suit suddenly stopped dead in the air.  “Jarvis thrusters at full power.”  She tried to shift and break free of the force holding her, but she got nowhere.  “Oh shit!”  She panicked a little as the metal compressed around her delicate frame.  “Sorry, metal man, can’t do that.”  She said out loud, voice distorted by the speaker.  “I’m going to have to ask you to stand down.”
If she had known that someone with metal powers was going to be here she would have called for backup.  “Should I call the Avengers, miss?”  Jarvis reminded her that she still could.  “No…just let me think.”  The metal pressing in on her from all sides worried her.  Swallowing hard, she pressed the release mechanism and the armor unfolded, allowing her to escape with a little difficulty from the warped suit.  “You’re going to pay for screwing with my suit.”
Tumblr media
Erik’s eyes narrowed and it took barely a flex of his power, a flicker of thought, for him to begin compressing the metal inwards.  He was slower, remembering Charles as he did so - the other would not be pleased with him, if he just murdered someone for no reason, and while he could find easy reason for the base he had demolished, something told him the suit would be far harder to justify - and just as he’d desired, the further compression yielded results as the metal parted and he subtly lowered the suit to allow for the human to fall without injury, concealing the mercy behind summoning the metal closer to himself, inspecting it with a curious eye before returning his gaze to the form once again.
“You do not wear Hydra’s colors,” he stated simply, although it was not entirely true. The red was part of Hydra, and in his experience, the group could adapt however they needed to in order to survive.  It would not surprise him if they did away with operating in the open.  “Did Charles send you?  Or was it someone else?”

Hydra had set up a base within one hundred miles of the mansion.  It had taken Erik maybe a week to realize exactly what it was - he didn’t often strain his metal sense too far, especially when Charles had left in him charge of guarding the mansion, and whatever their personal disagreements were, Erik would rather swallow cyanide than willingly allow a school full of mutants to be vulnerable - but the moment he had, he’d left the other adults in charge so that he could lay waste to the base.
And G-d, did he lay waste to Hydra.  He had brought walls crumbling down by yanking out the metal support beams, turned bullets and guns against their owners, and stretched his senses wide, thrilling in the deaths of the very people who had once took pleasure in that of his kind.  In fact, he was near about ready to bring the whole base down himself in one fell swoop when he felt it.  A large blip of metal on his radar.  He turned on his heel and walked out from the gates, eyes picking out a flash of gold and red from the sky before he snared it in his powers, his strength increasing as it blasted closer before he lifted a hand and stopped it dead in the air.
A flying suit of armor?  Well.  Never let it be said the future was predictable in its wonders.  At least the damn thing was metal.  Erik’s eyes narrowed and he flexed his hand, letting the metal compress and dent inwards around.... was that a body?  “Extract yourself.  Now,” he demanded.  “I will not ask a second time.”

He nodded, once. What more could possibly be said that hadn’t been? Words could and would never be enough. Trying would only make it worse. You couldn’t change the past–but you couldn’t ignore it, either.  “Please tell Xavier I stopped by, when you see him.” A pause, then, because it had to be said– “If there’s anything you need that I can give, please. I’m not hard to find.”
Tumblr media
Erik’s fingers played with the edge of the envelope.  “I’ll tell Charles,” he allowed with a nod.  “He’ll likely be curious you stopped by.”  Erik’s eyes flickered to the man who had been his childhood hero, before he’d grown old enough to realize that a savior wasn’t coming.  “If you hear talk of anyone intending to move against the school,” he remarked carefully, “I would suggest you make yourself scarce, Captain.”

He didn’t make a move until everything had settled. It wasn’t entirely unexpected–this place had that kind of reputation–but this was also bound to be an extremely emotional moment. The reaction itself, the emotional part, that wasn’t out of the ordinary. A link to a past best left forgotten? He could understand that, but.. Well, it wasn’t his choice to make, it was Lehnsherr’s. When everything that had been shaking settled, he let himself relax.
“I couldn’t have found you without his help,” he admitted. “He’s helped me with this a few times before, when he’s had the time. “They would have. We stopped them. I’d say ‘you’re welcome’, but that doesn’t cover it. We should have done more, faster. This… this is the least we could possibly do. I wish I could do more for you.”
Tumblr media
Erik shifted the envelope around in his hand, turning it over and listening to the gentle tinkling of the gold and the whisper of the chain, even as he felt that cool shift of metal near his fingers, before he set it gently on the desk.  “There was little place else for me to go,” he admitted quietly enough.  “Humanity fears me as any rabbit would the fox.  Charles has offered me safe haven.  For old times’ sake.”  Because if he didn’t, he would be setting me loose upon a world I do not know and have little care to otherwise understand.
His eyes flickered upwards.  “You helped destroy some of the camps that killed me and mine - both mutant and Jew,” he admitted quietly.  “You and your companions.  And you gave hope to a child who had little else.  If it were not for you, the war likely would not have ended the way it did.”  He looked away, even as he kept his senses alert, following the metal of the shield and how it moved.  “It was not enough.  But it was more than most had done.  And for that, you have my gratitude as well.”

“…I’m sorry for bringing up painful memories, Mr. Lehnsherr, but some of your family’s items were recovered and identified a few years ago. You’re the last living heir to your line that we can find.” He’d thought he’d have to ask Professor Xavier for help tracking him down, since they had had associations before, but this was better done in person. “I thought you might like to have them.”
It was never easy, this kind of job, but he felt it was worth the time and effort. There just hadn’t been enough manpower, he’d been told, but, while he could understand that… it wasn’t right. Most of these people had lost everything. Here was a chance to give at least some of it back.
“I apologize it took so long to get them back to you.” He fished out the small padded envelope and offered it to him. Inside lay a locket and a simple wedding band, both inscripted. It’s what had made it a fair certainty who it rightfully belonged to.
Tumblr media
In an instant, all of the metal in the room quivered, threatening to part from their places to attack the super soldier standing before him, before they slowly went still.  “You would be surprised, Captain Rogers,” he remarked softly, sensing the metal in the envelope, and immediately he felt something in his chest ache.
His mother’s locket.  His father’s wedding band.  He’d thought both long lost, to a child he had long buried, and he peeled himself from the desk, striding across the room as though each step didn’t crush something inside of him when he took back the envelope.  “I had accepted that they were lost, Captain,” he remarked.  “No doubt Charles had something to do with recovering them.”  After all, his birth name had long been obliterated, and well.  Leave it to his old friend to think to staunch the wound by inquiring about belongings he’d long thought robbed from him.
“..... Thank you,” he murmured quietly.  “I had thought the Nazis melted them down long ago for blood money.”

“If you’re Erik Lehnsherr, you’re actually the man I wanted to see.” He looked the right age, but… that didn’t seem to mean as much as it used to. Especially here.
Tumblr media
Something tightened in Erik’s face, and he reached out with his mutation, settling uneasily on the metal in the room.  “What do you want of me then, Captain Rogers?”

“Charles and I do not often see eye to eye,” he admitted.  “At least, not when it comes to our kind.”  Which was a large part of why it meant so much to him, to know that Charles had entrusted the safety of the mansion to him, and at the mention of expecting trouble, his head lifted as his senses snapped outwards, straining for a moment, seeking out even the slightest hint of metal that might be nearby.
“No threat,” he remarked after a moment of intense scouring, slowly lowering his guard again, “but I never trust that the peace will last.  To do so would be foolish.”

Marie’s mouth quirked up in a half smile. “You think the Professor’s trust is misplaced?” She gestured with a glove-covered hand. “Not that many you can call adults here…except you, me, and sleepyhead in there,” she smirked, pointing to Logan’s closed door. “Given what we’re capable of, I think we’re more than capable of handling food fights and teenage angst.”
She put her chin in her hand and eyed Erik speculatively. “Or…are you expectin’ some kinda trouble?” Marie cursed under her breath at the thought.

Marie turned and offered Erik a smile. “Please, call me Marie. Rogue is for when we’re in the field.” She laughed softly at the mention of Logan. “And I know all about Logan’s temper. Better than you, I expect,” she told him honestly, tapping her temple. “Used to have a piece of him in here. Even though his powers are gone, memories don’t fade that easily. Besides, he’s been my friend for years now. I know better than to come near him without coffee in hand.”
Dropping the manila envelope onto the floor, Marie kicked it underneath Logan’s door effortlessly. “Just needed to leave him some information anyway. Don’t need to wake him up for that. He can find me when he’s conscious.” She glanced up at the older mutant. “Was there something you needed? Have you heard from the Professor?”
Tumblr media
“Marie then,” he acknowledged well enough, though G-d knew that Rogue was a better name - the one she had crafted for herself rather than let some human decide for her.  “And I would hardly think that coffee would be enough to tame the Wolverine’s temper when roused so early.”  The man raised an eyebrow at her behavior but let it be well enough, deciding it best to let her keep some secrets - after all, he would prefer to preserve his where he could.  “I was just passing by.  I haven’t heard anything from Charles yet.  Apparently he trusts us to stay out of trouble without him supervising.”

“Miss Rogue,” Erik said as he came into the room, “I would advise you against knocking on the door.  Logan tends to be... rather hot-tempered when woken at this hour.”
