I have a sad but cute headcanon:

The reason why Luigi is a plumber is because being a plumber is Mario’s dream and he wants to help him.

If it’s true, the “you’re bringing your brother down with you” line hits harder

We’ve never seen him interested in plumbing himself. I think he's more into science and learning (despite being a scaredy cat, he's shown to be really curious)

Meanwhile, Mario loves plumbing, sports, and adventure.

That being said, I’m sure Luigi is happy with his life choices. He loves being by his brother’s side ❤️

EDIT:

Luigi would be a great engineer if given the chance. Sadly the only time we've really seen that side of him was when he was brainwashed.

+ Despite being a scaredy cat, he seems genuinely interested in E. Gadd and his inventions.

Bottom: zooming in on the "Super Mario 64 DS" Luigi, it becomes apparent that this Luigi is not from Super Mario 64 DS at all. Instead, it is a fan-made model of Luigi to be imported into Super Mario 64, where he does not appear.

While a legitimate unused model of Luigi made for Super Mario 64 was found in development files for the game shortly after this book was published, this fan-made model (made by a modder named CJes) has existed for years and was known for being used in hacks and fan animations, which is likely how the writers of the book found it and confused it for an official model.

Top: in Donkey Kong Country, the Master Necky boss is a bird whose main body is never seen. Instead, merely its head and neck appear from offscreen, being able to instantly switch what side of the screen it appears from.

Bottom: an official Japanese guide for the game contains a humorous illustration where Donkey Kong theorizes that the only way this is possible is if Master Necky actually has two heads, and each is simply hiding behind its own side of the screen.
