i would also say that, as the show goes on, perry not only sees doof's ineptness and failures right away but his potential and creativity and heart. the thing that rattles perry the most is that he finds himself wishing he could direct doof toward good things, just as badly as doof wants perry to ally with him in evil. they long to break out of their roles and hope for something more, some friendship that feels like it would be better. they do not know how to ask for what they want, which is time together where they can finally be on the same page. and in the show, they have to keep coming to terms with the fact that they don't have to be on the same page to love each other. their entire dynamic is a metaphor for the tension between wanting the best for someone and wanting them to change for you, on your terms. they both feel rejected when their plans for the other are foiled. but because they have vowed to keep working at it, because they stick to the bonds of holy acrimony, they take the bad with the good. they let themselves be disappointed again and again because being with each other is truly the most important thing, even if they sometimes wish it could be on different terms. that's how they learn to fully appreciate each other for who they are. that's romance.
