Sometimes someone shares a glimpse of how they see me like this, like a good and kind and wise and reassuring person who knows exactly what to say- and I find myself torn between fear- the fear of being revealed as an imposter, the fear of failure, the fear that I will never live up to that image, the fear that expectations of me have grown beyond what I could ever hope to reach, and that anyone who would ever know me after seeing such a caricature would only compare reality to perception and find me a pale, disappointing shadow- and the powerful encouragement to become as close to that image as I can, like maybe it’s something I can hope to reach for.

I’m a tired, flawed, arrogant, self-occupied person by nature, but I want to be this person you describe. I do. So even if this person who helps you in your imagination isn’t me, and only imitates an image of a projection of who I actually am, I’m glad that you have it. And thank you for sharing- it makes me feel as though I’m closer to being a good person than I was.
