what YOU can do to fight KOSA
KOSA, or the Kids Online Safety Act, is back after failing to pass last year. If history has taught us anything, blanket censorship poses a very real danger to marginalized peoples including the LGBTQ+ community. Because it's never about the kids.
The best time to fight was yesterday; the second best time to fight is right fucking now. So I've scrounged like a stressed-out raccoon in an unattended garbage bin to dig up a few resources you'll hopefully consider to be helpful.
Tumblr media
🪶 Contacting your representative is probably the most obvious step. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has made this easy as shit with a webpage that will message your rep for you. The page provides a template you can use as-is or edit freely, and a short form asking for your name, address, and contact information.
Not that you can't also reach out directly, which I do encourage because the whole process is pretty routine. To find out who to contact, you can look up your House Rep on the official govt site.
🪶 Consider also signing other petitions and supporting organizations dedicated to fighting for a free and open internet.
In addition to the ACLU, I highly recommend Fight for the Future...
... and the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF).
I've also seen the Stop KOSA petition floating around, if you'd like to throw your name into that hat as well.
Stay vigilant and keep fighting, internet enjoyers.

An Open Letter to the Governments Enforcing Online Censorship Laws:
I don’t usually get political on here. But I’m angry. And I’m scared.
What’s happening right now in the UK and Australia? It’s not just about "protecting kids" from NSFW content. It’s about control. It’s about censorship disguised as morality. And it terrifies me for what’s coming next because it always comes next.
They say it’s to keep minors safe. But censorship never stops at its first excuse. Give a government an inch, and it swallows miles. That’s not a theory. It’s history. And history doesn’t just repeat. It escalates.
As someone who creates dark, explicit fiction, this feels personal. This is my warning bell. The stories I write, the ones people try to silence aren’t just "fucked up smut." They’re lifelines. They’re therapy. They’re how people process pain, explore the shadows, reclaim power, or just survive another goddamn day. Dark content can be grotesque, yes, but it can also be honest, raw, human. It makes you feel. It makes you face what others ignore. That’s why they’re afraid of it.
And let’s stop pretending this is really about the kids.
If it were, the Epstein files would be public. The names would be prosecuted. Grooming gangs wouldn’t be swept under the rug for political convenience. The child protection system wouldn’t be a funnel of unchecked abuse. If they cared about children, they'd fix what’s broken. But they don’t. Because this was never about children. It’s about sanitizing the internet into a dead, glossy facade that makes governments and corporations feel clean.
What enrages me more than the laws themselves are the people applauding them. The ones nodding along, chanting “think of the children” while blindly handing over their freedoms like it’s some righteous offering. It's cowardice dressed up as virtue.
This doesn’t end with porn bans. It never does. First they silence desire. Then dissent. Then everything else that makes art and freedom, dangerous.
You may not care now. But you will, when it’s your voice they smother next.
TL;dr Reblog this if you believe in freedom of expression. Say nothing and watch it get stripped away.

joining the war on kids reading any book they want on the side of kids reading any book they want. simply you will be fine. it's even good to be confronted with things you don't understand and even find upsetting, uncomfortable and difficult. it's a surprise tool that will help you later.

FOR PARENTS OF YOUNG KIDS IN THE US!
Someone over on bluesky posted this and I figured I'd better repost it here. It's the pre-RFK 2025 vaccination schedule for babies and young children, ya know, just in case it mysteriously disappears. Save this and give it to your child's pediatrician; tell them this is the schedule you want your child on.

Everyone: Please please please don't write your books in Google Docs. Frankly don't use Google Drive for personal stuff.
Their terms of service say they take down stuff like content related to terrorism and trafficking, but this Google Sheet was literally a list of movies I'd watched this year and books I'd read.

this is not my screenshot
discord has been pushing its new uk online safety act changes early for some users. this screenshot belongs to a 32 year old who used discords built in face scanner to verify their age. the scanner said they were 11 years old, and instantly suspended the account, with no option to try again or appeal, and the suspension will automatically end in 2027, when they’re “old enough” to use discord.
DO NOT SCAN YOUR FACE TO VERIFY YOUR AGE
if you really want to verify your age, use a different option available. don’t trust the face scan.

I just wanted to make a little quicklist of actions I've seen posted around that you can take in regards to the payment services restricting what we are and aren't allowed to buy and sell. Most of these take under a minute. Feel free to add to it!

so itchio has shadowbanned any games tagged with 'nsfw', 'adult', or 'erotic' so they don't show up in searches, and several devs have reported that their r18 games have been removed from the site with no warning
you know, maybe the internet shouldn’t be controlled by payment processors and terf lobbyists. and maybe people should be more concerned about this rise of censorship on queer media.

Just to clarify, there's a bill that would STOP credit card companies from controlling who's allowed to spend money on porn or "risque" (read: queer) content. If you don't think big business should be able to tell you what to spend your own damn money on, call your senators and reps to let them know! It's the Fair Access to Banking Act, H.R.987 in the House, S.410 in the Senate.

It’s interesting how diseases rip through schools at incredible speeds despite being in an arguably modern, clean(ish) environment. I wonder if it has something to do with the whole “you need a doctor’s note to excuse your absence of even one day” combined with the average price of going to a doctor, the lack of education on things like “you’re still contagious even after the fever goes away”, and the overwhelming message of “if you don’t struggle through it, you’re a failure!”
