the AMERICAN* FUJO* Kickstarter is now live!
introducing a new literary journal about the intersections of gender & sexuality, power, and virtual space in fandom. By the editors who brought you works like yaoi zine, yuri zine, and butchverse 1 & 2.
(cover illustration by the incredible shalida)
AMERICAN* FUJO* is Alexis theswordwizard (thats meeeee :D) & tshirt3000's forthcoming anthology on fandom culture, trans identity, and general overanalysis. Our project tries to asterisk and complicate its categories of both āAmericanā and āFujoā as much as possible, interrogating gender and sexuality, power of all kinds, and the virtual communities we call fandom.Ā
We asked our contributors questions along those lines: How has being a fan affected your gender or sexuality? How has our gender or sexuality affected how we engage in fandom? Who is a fujoshi, who wants to be one, and who doesnāt get the choice? In America-centric fan spaces, what is necessarily suppressed? How can we trouble the category and dominance of āAmericanā from within and without? Finally, what does it mean to be in a community thatās overwhelmingly virtual, as reliant on digital social platforms as it is on fictional media, both owned by another party? And what affects or acts are uniquely enabled by these virtualized desires and sexuality?Ā
Our contributors range from actual self-identified American fujos to writers who are emphatically neither. They answer these questions through illustration, comics, essays, and autotheory, developing creative ways to capture fandom and its discontents. The anthology surveys a wide range of topics, from transgender fujoshism (in any direction) to race and belonging within theoretically progressive fandom. We want to make the full vibrancy of fandom as accessible as possible, and theorize both its possibilities and its limits through this anthology. We hope youāre as excited to read AMERICAN* FUJO* as we are to make it!
Support or follow our campaign on Kickstarter!

ayo hold up⦠what if multiple yanderes were after the same darling during the purge? is that even possible? or are there rules in place so that a darling can only be hunted by one yandere? like, whichever yandere pays the most or proves themselves through purge officeās checks?
and if it IS possible⦠are the yanderes given a heads up? like āhey btw other yanderes are after them. good luck lolā. god imagine the chaos. poor darling lmao
Yes, multiple yanderes can put a claim on one darling! The darling would just receive multiple red letters (government announcement of a claim).
Yanderes arenāt notified that their darling has several claims, however, because that would be too beneficial for them. The darling has to have a fighting chance, after all. Also I imagine that if a Pathetic Shrimp of a yandere heard that their darling has several claims, they would be tempted to break the law and kidnap them early.
Celebrities have to notify their mail carriers or else theyāll receive an influx of thousands of red letters.
I like to think that yanderes can send a love letter with the red envelope, so Darlings can try and figure out whoās after them. If caught during the Purge, that job switches to the yandere so they know who to kill. I bet the victorious yandere also frames their letter as a trophy, or stuffs a rivalās letter into the mouth of their decapitated head.

Hi no your world building idea on the financial implications/restrictions of the purge are making me chew through steel actually. Because sure it keeps getting higher and higher financially, but that means that people (who don't just succumb to illegal means) start to develop weird cultures around it.
Like people who decide young that they would rather just make themselves as likeable as possible in hopes of getting a yandere for themselves the same way some people hope to become house spouses. Obsessing over looking and behaving perfect to the point of not knowing who they actually are outside of performing this role 24/7 (because who knows when their potential meal ticket might be watching? Where they put cameras? You can never risk breaking character. You have to be the character and hope they never find out the truth)
Celebrities in interviews talking about how they wanted to be famous in part to have resources to find the best darling and then keep them. People trying to become a celebrity's darling just so they can try and network their own career.
People add keeping their darlings on the list of lottery winning fantasies. Talking about the way they'd decorate their rooms and the things they'd give for mental and emotional enrichment.
Purge sympathizers who argue its an honor for you to be chosen as a darling since it means an easy life for a year. Darlings being financially taken care of, sure, but dealing with people taking them even less seriously as individuals because of the ""privilege"" to the point that then asking for basic rights or ammendments becomes a war against them being framed as greedy or demanding. (They already financially support you, and now you're insisting that they let you outside too??? What's even the point of kidnapping you then?? So what if it's for medical and dental care, that just means people who aren't your yanderes touching you, examining you, not a chance).
I'm just having so many thoughts and it's your fault (affectionate)
FROTHING AT THE MOUTH
Incredible ideas. The culture around the Purge is so interesting.
Like imagine a Yandere whoās dreamed of having a Darling their whole life, only for a bigger and badder yandere to show up and kidnap them? Anyone can kill and be killed. Darling, Yandere, and Normal aren't permanent labels.
There would be Darling seminars, where people could learn how to catch the attention of a high-value yandere. Or Yandere seminars, on how to maintain passive income and keep the darling reliant on you once the captivity period ends.
And maybe early in post-Purge captivity, there are mandatory and voluntary workshops for Yans and Darlings to learn how to coexist together in accordance with the law.
I actually love your ideas. Lottery winning fantasies? Kids dreaming about their future Darlings instead of weddings?
It's easy to map out the laws in a world like this, but culture is so multi-faceted and intricate. I'm actually barking at some of these ideas
Sorry this took so long to respond to haha. Your ideas were so good that i had to think for a while about how to add to them.

do you think there'd be a limit on how many darlings you could claim? and if yes, would the limit change depending if some of the claimed darlings were platonic?
Iām not sure! I think it would depend on the societyās perception of Yan-Darling relationship. Is it like marriage, pure and good? Or the powerful utilizing their earned rights?
It would also depend on tax incentives. Yans with Darlings probably get a tax cut because they have a legal dependent. However a wealthy Yandere would want a huge harem of Darlings because its a huge tax cut. The government would NOT want this.
Iām inclined to think that, in most instances, Yanderes are limited to one romantic Darling and several platonic Darlings, depending on finances, the Yandereās personality, and their relationship with the Darling(s) already kidnapped (determined by several interviews with the Purge Office).
The Purge is allowed so that society runs better. Its not for Yanderes to amass a harem. However thereās probably wiggle room if a Yandere can spend enough money to get in front of a judge.

What if thereās a clause in the Purge law that states after 10 years of continuous captivity, the Yanderes are no longer required to release their Darling for the obligatory 3-day pre-Purge preparation period.
Like if the Darling hasnāt escaped after this long, they probably wonāt ever. So to save the unnecessary bureaucracy, the Darling will legally be owned by the Yandere.
This is a hotly debated clause because of how archaic it is. However its still in effect because many law makers have owned their darlings for decades at this point and theyāre in no rush to go through the hassle of the Purge again.

The thing is, in the yandere-purge-world, there would probably be some advocates for reducing darlings wages in order to increase the wages of yanderes. The whole system depends on the classification of a yandere and their darling, like, how is it recognized?
If someone has to register as a yandere and register their darling before they get the purge letter, then maybe there should be some immediate procedures, such as the darling getting fired? But that would complicate companies, so it would become a communism vs. Capitalism debate, right?
The response would be governments placing darlings as āunable to workā, and yanderes would climb the banner, since the majority of the government would be yandere.
It would result in systematic oppression of darlings, so the darlings would be unable to work, and even if they retained their allowance to vote, the yanderes might not even let them outside.
Really, itās just like the 1940s for the men vs. Women thing.
Oo this ask begs an important questionāsince suppression in this society is based off of yandere/darling/and unchosen & not-yet-crazy people, how heavily do personalities play a role in job opportunities/first impressions/government assistance/etc?
From this point on, i will call the third group of people Normals (ie the group of unregistered yanderes and people who havenāt been chosen as a darling by a yandere. All darlings and yanderes start out as Normals.)
In the Ye Old Era, circa 1800s and earlier, there was a zero-nuance understanding of Darlings and Yanderes, in the same way that men subjugated women.
Yanderes killed and pillaged to get what they want, and Everyone Else either murdered them back or were forced into submission. I doubt there was a registry of Yans and Darlings, because you were either someoneās bitch or you werenāt.
As the world globalized, societies modernized, technology developed, capitalism spread⦠Yanderes had to reel it in or face capital punishment. It was no longer acceptable to butcher your neighbor for their daughter/son.
Kind of like prohibition, there was a time in society where all murder, kidnapping, etc was illegal. This had unintended, bloody consequences as homicide and suicide actually increased.
Thus the Purge was born.
To answer your questions, I donāt think a darling would face any repercussions from being claimed by a yandere. The yandere has to actually kidnap them during the Purge before Darling loses any rights. Because up until Darling received their claim notice, they were Normal.
I bet thereās also laws to protect against discrimination based off class and personality type. Businesses are not allowed to discriminate, however I bet theyāre also notified that a Darling has received a claim notice just in case they go missing after the Purge lol.
Systematic suppression runs deep. Thereās no way around it. All the most powerful families and businesses are headed by yanderes. They own the economy, write the laws, etc.
Fortunately there are yanderes sympathetic to darlings, so eventually Darlings got their rights.
However!!! Imaging youāve been held captive for a decade. What sort of job prospects do you have? Why would anyone want you when your degree is stale and you have insane therapy requirements.
What if the government gave willing Darlings to darling-less yanderes? Like, youāre incapable of integrating into the real world after being imprisoned, and thereās plenty of lonely yanderes out there, so why not pair up?
It could be a 6-month rehabilitation contract, to a lifelong āmarriage.ā

If we're going by the purge becoming an upper class event, then eventually it will result in more yanderes seeking higher paid positions, and over time a majority of the upper class will be yandere. Which will make life harder for even more darlings! They cannot win.
I mean, in a world where yanderes have been a personality type/disposition since the emergence of society, it only makes since that theyāre already at the top. Theyāre literally this AUās āstraight white maleā
The definition of a yandere varies from person to person, society to society. It ranges from āsomeone who has an obsessive affection for a darlingā to a more general ādomineering personality (likely and/or capable of capturing a darling)ā.
And CEOs, self starters, leaders, etc. all have very strong, driven personalities. Out of everyone in a populationācongress(wo)men/presidents/celebrities are statistically more likely to be yanderes. Generally speaking.
Thereās, of course, pathetic wet tissue yanderes we all know and love⦠but the powerful? The wealthy? These positions have been filled by yanderes for centuries.
Makes me wonder what the Darlingsā Rights Movement looked like at the dawn of modern society lol.

a stupid worldbuilding thought about Purge AU
Do you think there would be social criticism about the Purge in a yandere-normal world, not because of human rights violations against darlings, but because yanderes have to meet a financial requirement? Because if youāre going to have a captive for a year, you have to prove you can finance them.
Like HONESTLY in this economy, what person under 30 could take the added cost of living for another adult? Like is a yandere gonna have a darling locked in a shared flat with three other normal roommates? Or worse, in their parentās house?
What if darlings could sue that their standard of living dropped too far? For example, a darling makes a six figures a year but gets caught off guard by a broke ass yandere on the Purge, then is trapped in a dingy apartment for a year.
Thereās a movement of darlings and normies alike who advocate for a higher and higher minimum financial requirement, meanwhile yanderes rally to boycott the Purge because the barrier to entry is too high.
A yandere on national television holds up a cardboard print-out of their darling (after their purge application was denied) and is like just because Iām a music major doesnāt mean Iām incapable of taking care of them!!!
The Purge would become a bourgeois and upper-class event in the eyes of the younger generations. Furthermore, I bet there would be an uptick in unlawful kidnapping/murders during recessions. Haha.
Makes me wonder about government-sponsored benefits for yanderes who didnāt make the cut. Like you get a disability check because youāre so coochie deprived.

might I remind everyone that, in Platoās Symposium, Phaedrus argued that not only were Achilles and Patroclus lovers, but that Achilles was the bottom and Patroclus the top
i really believe that discussing the character with someone who shares ur interpretation is the closest u can get to modern day philosophy. we are like plato and aristotle but talking about a fictional guys trauma

what books do you guys read to level up your writing? Like beautiful prose, compelling narrator, etc etc
Right now Iām reading Confessions of a Mask by mishima and, although the translation needs an update, his style broke my writers block.
His writing pays attention to odd details that I never would have thought to write, as annoying as it might be at times.
For those curious, its about a homosexual man in wartime japan. The book blends his sexual attraction with sadomasochistic themes.

[ A character workshop on yanderes ]
These concepts also apply to regular male romantic leads
I watched ContraPointās video essay on Twilight and she brings up some really great points on female power fantasy via male leads.
Inspired by this, here are some character questions I often ask myself when building personalities and plot tension.
ā¦
People typically become the person they needed when they were a child. What kind of person is your character?
eg. A character from a dysfunctional family has rigid boundaries and a peaceful household.
When following the male POV, what power fantasies does it provide the reader?
eg. Strength, sadism, social power, etc
Outside of romantic tension, what personality traits would create friction between the MMC and FMC?
eg. Rigid boundaries and well-protected peace creates a highly structured life. This might seem constricting and unfair to a love interest.

AND SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER !!!! ITS A MUST

Already written babes āļø although the first scene is just a shirt. Iāll keep used underwear on the brain though.

MC is single but I love this premise. Like comforting someone after youve single-handedly taken everything from them? Fine dining.

MC doesnāt work out but some of the yanderes do. I can see the roles reversed š

Funny you mention this. How about they slip MC a date rape drug to scare him into quitting his job at a bar? š followed byā¦. an impromptu photoshoot perhaps?

ITS A MUST

Lack of personal space is vitaaaaalll. The accidental brushing, the sharing of all personal belongings, trust build up over time!!

Domesticity is so important for long yandere fics! Its heart breaking because it shows what could have been </3
I especially love family/domesticity oriented yanderes. Theyāre just so normal, so lovely, when theyāre with their darling in the house. Domestic bliss sprinkled into a erotic horror elevates the whole story imo
do you guys have any yandere roommate ideas you love reading about ? Iām writing a MMMMM long fic (lmfao) with four poly yanderes and their roommate.
let me know if thereās any disgusting shenanigans you would be interested in seeing
send me anons asks and Iāll compile them in a reblog
#great ideas!!! its good to know that weāre all on the same page lmao#MC shares a room with two yanderes which adds so much tension sheeeesh#-home videos- will play a huge part in this fic#so I canāt wait to utilize the security cameras mwuhahaha#part 1#blugh talks
