What are the Military Camouflage Patterns?
Camouflage patterns are used to hide military members and their equipment from the enemy, in different environments, during the battles and operations. It helps them also identify their teammates and their opposition.
Which pattern to use depends on the decision of the country, it can differ from environment to another, from a branch to another, and from a period to another. There is no best pattern, every pattern has its own specs and usefulness.
In this blog, I’ll share with you a couple of camouflage patterns:
US Woodland: it was used for the first time by the United States forces in 1981. It contains four colors; brown, sand, green and black. Many other armies have used this pattern; the Guinean gendarmerie, the National Armed Forces of Côte d'Ivoire, the Malian Army…
Digital: the main feature of this category is its ability to provide camouflage over a range of distances. It can be created by computer and algorithm but it’s not necessary. The Afghan Special Narcotics Force (ASNF), the Afghan National Civil Order Police (ANCOP) have been using digital camouflage since 2010.
Tiger stripe: there are different variations of tiger stripe pattern. The French pattern has been used by the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces, French Armed Forces, Benin armed forces, Cameroon army, Comorian security force to mention a few.
Flecktarn: it’s a five-color pattern; dark green, light green, black, red brown and green brown. It is used by the East German National People's Army and was also issued for Russia in 2011.
DPC: it refers to Disruptive pattern camouflage and it was issued for the Royal Cambodian Army and the Royal Gendarmerie of Cambodia between 2006 and 2010, and the Special Force of PLA Army Beijing Military Region are using it now.
Besides the patterns mentioned above, there are others like Lizard, Rain, Splinter….
