What is an "Elbow," Anyway?
I’m back in physical therapy. Again. This time, it’s to help correct a few issues that came up while I was at Disney. I’ve had a long standing issue with back pain, and my knee’s now been bugging me as well, to the point that I decided I needed professional help. (I mean, I probably need professional help for a lot of things, but we’re just talking for physical pain at the moment.) I’m a firm…

Revisiting Tron
In the wake of Disney World, my kids were interested enough in the Tron ride that they wanted to check out the Tron movie. It’s been a long time since I watched it, and I had no idea how something that seemed so awesome as a kid in the 80s would hold up today. Disney+ was all too ready to show us. The answer? Not too well. It turns out, an awful lot of the success of the movie relies on the…

Home with Tomas and Daniela
Denisa and Michaela have been gone to Young Women’s Camp since Tuesday, so it’s just been me at home with Tomas and Daniela. It’s been fun hanging out with them (when I’ve been home). A very different experience than what it was like a while ago. Daniela, when hearing it was just going to be the three of us, excitedly reminisced what we did the last time this happened. I’ll admit I don’t really…

DEATH IN THE DARK is Out Today!
It’s official. My latest book, Death in the Dark, is out today and should be available for you to pick up even as we speak. Here’s the review from Kirkus: A chilling and adventure-filled mystery set amid the Blitz and inspired by a real serial killer. Seventeen-year-old Mary Churchill, daughter of the prime minister, is bored with being kept away from danger during World War II. During a…

Is the Disney Dining Plan Worth It?
A hotly contested debate in the Disney online communities centers around the Disney Dining Plan and whether or not it’s worth it. The chatter is loud enough that I really questioned what the best approach for me would be. I’ve been a big fan of the Dining Plan in the past, but that was 9 years ago, and it might have changed. Even when they had an offer for a vacation package that included the…

Disney Then vs. Now: Is the Magic Gone?
It’s been almost 9 years since I last went to Disney World. Before then, I would go with my family about once every three years, and when I was growing up, we sometimes went twice a year. I realize Disney isn’t for everyone, but it very much is for me. Or at least, it has been. We had a trip scheduled for June 2020, and that fell apart for obvious reasons. Since then, I hadn’t had a chance to…

Movie Review: Superman (2025)
Would you look at that?! I made it to a movie for opening weekend? It’s true. And to commemorate the occasion, I’m writing a review right away. Heading into it, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. I only made the decision to go see it a few hours before, and I hadn’t really read much of anything on the movie. I knew most of the reviews were fairly good, and I knew James Gunn (of Guardians of…

On the Continued Rise of ICE
I’m a mishmash of thoughts today, and they might all be a bit jumbled, as more than anything, I feel overwhelmed by current events. I think one of the things I’m disappointed in most at the current point in American history is how gleefully so many Americans are jumping on the train to dehumanize people. Slap a label on someone (“Illegal immigrant”), and it suddenly seems a-okay by many for just…

The Next BYU Quarterback
If you’re not following BYU sports, you might not have heard of the current situation they’re in at the quarterback position. At the end of last year, everything looked peachy keen. Jake Retzlaff was doing great at quarterback and had another year of eligibility left. We were looking great for the next season. Then, a month or so ago, the news broke that Retzlaff was being sued for rape (but not…

Five Years of Ferris
Ferris officially turned five years old yesterday, believe it or not. We celebrated by giving him a bone and a new crab chew toy. He was initially torn which he was more excited about, but ultimately decided the bone was the object that deserved the bulk of his attention. He saved the crab toy to bring up and chew during movie time to maximize the amount of noise and disturbance he could make.…

Movie Review: Frozen (West End Live Recording)
I saw Disney+ had just put up a live recording of the West End production of Frozen, and I’m a huge sucker for live recordings of stage productions, so we watched it right away as a family. I wasn’t sure of what we would get. It wasn’t exactly up front that it was the actual West End production, so I was initially concerned this might just be something that was done at the theme parks. (I…

Accountability Post: Gym Goal
Back on May 7th, I posted that I was trying to go to the gym regularly again. That day was my fourth time going, and I was celebrating having made it an entire week with the new goal of going three times a week. Well, it’s a month and a half later, and I thought it would be good to pop in and report how I’m doing. Great! I actually have continued to go three times a week, always during my lunch…

Movie Review: Snow White (2025)
I watched the live action Snow White yesterday with the family, and I’m not entirely sure how I want to handle it. Look. I’ve got a goal not to write bad reviews about things. Life’s short enough that I don’t want to waste time telling people what not to watch (though there are some films that it might be considered a crime not to warn people away from, because . . . life is too short to spend…

Back to Two Cars
After some frantic researching, Denisa, Tomas, and I went to Augusta on Saturday and bought a 2023 Honda Accord. As I noted last time I went through all of this, buying a car is far from a fun experience for me. Is it a fun experience for anyone? I guess maybe if you’ve just won the lottery or something, it would be a blast? I don’t know. For me, it presents a research question that’s impossible…

Movie Review: Shaolin Soccer
Sometimes I forget that movies that I’m familiar with and are old news to me are very much new news to many other people. Today’s reminder? Shaolin Soccer. I was surprised to realize that it came out all the way back in 2001. It’s a Stephen Chow movie, which either means something to you or (more likely these days) doesn’t. Back in the early 2000s, he released a couple of comedy/martial arts…

Another Car Accident
Well, Friday didn’t quite go according to plan. Daniela got in an accident. It was big enough that the airbags deployed and EMTs came to the scene, but thankfully no one was injured. We did have Daniela taken to the hospital, as there was a bit of uncertainty about whether or not she blacked out. She had a CT scan and X-rays and they all came back clean, so that’s a huge relief. She woke up the…

Adventures in Boston
A few months ago, Denisa and I were looking for a time to go down to Boston to take Michaela to the temple for her first time. We had hoped to be able to go with a group in January, but that didn’t pan out, so we wanted to be sure to get there soon, since she’d been looking forward to it so much. Of course, “soon” is a very relative term when we’re busy, and the first time that actually worked…
