Light - Final Review
Looking back at this project i feel that i achieved the initial goal i set out. I wanted to photograph gaming characters through the use of light. I think that the stencils i made captured the light fairly well. Looking back i wish i had more time to play around with the stencils in context rather than simply using a black background. I also wish the i managed my time better so i was able to make labels for each image.
Other than that, i feel i have learnt a lot about the technicality of taking photographs of light. i found that, by using a ten second timer in my final shoot made it a lot easier for me to capture the light accurately and centred well in the frame.
Overall, i think i captured the light through the stencils well. I like the black background as it does not distract from the light.

Third Shoot Refelction
After my third shoot i have realised, to my disappointment, that two of my stencils will not work successfully. These are the Link and Lara Croft stencils. As the lights i bought were not bright enough to photograph, i have decided i will use a white light so i can edit the colour of the light on photoshop using the hue/saturation tool. After using the whiter light i discovered that the green light was much brighter and easier to capture in the photograph. I began using this light instead as it was brighter. I can then edit the light on photoshop.

Artist Precedent - Gjon Mili

Gjon Mili
This Albanian photographer is a self-taught success. Mili was one of the first great light painters and is now inspiration to many light photographers today. In these photographs Mili tied lights to an ice-skater’s boats then photographed her skating with a long exposure.
I like how the form of the person is recreated through the use of light. By capturing the light Mili also captures the form and beauty of the skater’s movements.

Revised Proposal - Light
For this project I intend recreate iconic gaming characters through the use of light. I hope to improve technical control when taking photographs. I wish to gain a deeper understanding of how I can capture light effectively.
I intend to create a stencil for each iconic character. By shining light through the stencil, towards the wall, the character should appear as a silhouette of light. I can then photograph the silhouette. I intend to take these photographs in the complete dark so the silhouette is the only focus. I will use a low f-stop and a mid to high ISO so as much light as possible can be captured. I intend to use a slow shutter speed of at least 3 seconds. This is so the light can be capture for a longer period of time so the light will show up better. However, I do not want the exposure to be too long otherwise any small movement will be evident in the photograph. This is because the stencil will appear shakey. I will take the photograph from a medium to a medium-close shot.
I have chosen to take photographs to recreate iconic gaming characters as these characters are all virtual. These characters only exist in the game. Much like in photography, light painting only exists within the photograph. Light is not tangible nor are the characters in these games. I wish to show this relationship within my photographs. I intend to use a black background to remove any evidence of reality.
By the end of this project I intend to have photographic series of 4-8 images. Each image will have a label which states the character, the game, first appearance and the publishers. These images will be laid out in chronological order.

After researching gaming characters, i have decided to create a label for each image. this label will show the following:
The character:
First Appearance:
Game:
Publishers:
By creating labels like this for each image, i will be able to present my images in chronological order. This way my images will relate to each other.

Artist Precedent - Fabrice Wittner

This French photographer uses stencils to create ghost like characters within the photograph.
I like how Fabrice using light painting to create these characters. Though, these characters don’t appear real, they still fit naturally into the setting. The stencils Fabrice has made are beautifully crafted.

Artist Precedent - Atton Conrad

This London-based photographer often photographs for advertising.
I like how he has created fashion using light painting. Conrad using stencils to create these effects. Though, the dresses don’t like real I like how they almost have a computer generated effect – especially the image on the bottom. These images look like they have been edited this way after photographing rather than the dressing being created while photographing.

Light - Second shoot Camera settings
For my second shoot i started off using a f-stop of 5.6, a shutter speed of 30 seconds and an ISO of 100. As the light was not capture successfully with these settings i then lowered the shutter speed to 3.2 seconds and raised the ISO to 1600. This was so the light was captured brightly and so the image was not shaky.

Light - Second Shoot Reflection
As my last shoot was unsuccessful with hand light drawing the games, i decided for this shoot to make stencils. My second shoot was more a test shoot to see if these stencils will work. First, i tried to capture the form of the stencil by shining the light towards the camera (which on on an tripod). Unfortunately, this did not work well.

After this failed attempt i then decided to try shining the light through the stencil towards the wall, then taking the photograph of the wall. This technique seemed to be more successful however, because of the long exposure, the movement of the stencil was captured has i held it. This made the image appear blurry/ shaky. So, i then shortened the shutter speed. This helped slightly however there was slight some shakiness.

For my next shoot, i intend to shorten the shutter speed so less movement is captured. However, i have to be careful not to shorten this too much otherwise the light will not be captured in the same way. I will also attach the stencils to something so there is no movement. As when i hold it myself my hand moves around too much.

HDR image. Personally i do not like the final outcome of this technique. I think it takes away the beauty and naturalality of the original item.

After doing some research i found a few website that i thought were helpful for me to find the right charcaters to use from gaming. I wanted to chose the most popular (the common) characters from the lists that i found. From the sites that i found some of them had listed characters i was already thinking of, such as Mario. This is good as it lets me know im on the right track.
Here is a blog that i found to be helpful as it had many characters listed. http://www.listal.com/list/most-famous-game-characters
I found this video to also be very helpful. http://www.watchmojo.com/index.php?id=9542
