All commercial drivers operating in the United States today, regardless of the distances they drive, must carry with them, at all times, a valid medical certificate stating that they have exceeded the standard DOT physical battery. If you are going to drive commercially, you must carry this important document, along with your license, every time you are in the vehicle, period. There are no exceptions, so if you have not already done so, you must do so before suspending your license.

Because it is important

The Department of Transportation, the federal agency that oversees interstate commerce, wants to be sure that all commercial drivers are fit enough to handle the rigors of short, long and interstate highway transportation. They have the right to ensure public safety, and an unfit driver would definitely constitute a considerable threat to the public. Can you imagine the chaos that would be caused by a driver suffering a stroke, an episode of diabetes or an epileptic seizure, while piloting a multi-ton vehicle on any state highway?

This is the reason why all commercial drivers, regardless of state or region, are required to pass a battery of DOT physical exams and maintain a good health certificate. There is no drug testing unless the authorities believe it is justified, and you will be notified if this is the case. After this, all that remains is a true physical examination and a neurological reflex test. The doctor will record everything and then make your recommendation about whether you have passed your DOT physical exams and what certificate you should issue, if applicable.
