“Sculpture is for the touch, painting is for the eye. I wanted to make a sculpture for the eye and a painting for the touch.”

Matthew Stander,
Building blocks, 2023
Wood, Monofilament, Artifacts
“Building blocks is a dive into the objects of my childhood. By suspending them inside the wooden frames, I’ve archived them in the way in which they are protected. Having my adult hands suspended along with these childhood artifacts, I show how I am tightly holding onto my childhood. The closed fists show that these are items I am not ready or willing to let go of. The monofilament used to suspend the objects creates a web system coming from the wooden frames; this is to show the connection between these items. These objects were part of the building blocks of who I am today.”
