2. Horizon

There was no horizon in the Shroud - only layers and layers of old roots and tall branches. It seemed just as deep, or deeper, even, than it could possibly be wide, and as a child Nahte had thought falling from one of the high branches could send you so far down into the dark that you'd land in the Lifestream itself.

Now that he had reached the ripe old age of 15, he doubted it to be quite so severe… but wasn't eager to test the assumption.

Ears flicking, he crouched on a mossy bough, then leapt high. Claws caught the spindly branch above as his tail swung out to counterbalance, and in a smooth motion Nahte scaled another level higher.

Light began to filter through the leaves as he climbed the canopy, dark blues melting into grey greens, and then warmer yellows. The scent in the air changed. Wind ruffled the thinning limbs of great trees, and he couldn't hold back a smile at the feel of it, cool across his face.

Nearby, his pair of loyal arbor buzzards chittered - mixed warbles of excitement and fear. These were not their hunting grounds. But Nahte was undeterred. As he reached the crest of the tree, others around it tapered off, and night-sensitive eyes narrowed to slits as he found himself in open air at last.

"Wow." He breathed. Over the waves of mighty treetops, Nahte could see for miles in every direction - until the gathered distant mountains covered up the horizon line. Somewhere out there, too, an ocean lay beyond his view. And beyond those? Places he'd never seen. People he'd never met. Wonders far beyond the scope of the Shroud that had hidden him his whole life.

Someday, he'd see it all.

First is Yllis:

-Has an insane sweet tooth, especially with fruit. Almost always has dried fruit on her person to snack on while she travels. Puts way too much sugar in her tea.

-Conversely, can barely stomach fish. The texture weirds her out and the flavour makes her nose wrinkle. She will eat it if you put it in front of her. She will say it's delicious. She will be lying.

-Becomes a very talented gemsmith! She has a very steady hand, and a summoner's mind for geometry, so applying that to lapidary work is easy. Post-EW she actually cuts a new gem herself to use as a focus for her carbuncle.

Now Ystran:

-A bit of a gambler. He loves to play cards and is incredibly good at it (to where he's been in brawls with people who think he's cheating), and so can be a little cocksure when he gets challenged.

-Adores animals, especially birds. Raised both Lucien the chocobo and Cyra the hunting hawk by hand from chicks. Gets a little emotional when he sees griffins. Might have a manly cry if you put a baby griffin in his lap, honestly.

-Has natural tabby/tiger markings on his face and down his back. With that and his height (5'10, pretty tall for a miqo boy), people have asked if he has any Hrothgar in his blood. He doesn't (as far back as anyone knows anyway) but most people drop the theory anyway when they learn Yllis is his full sister (4'10, bitty freckles, pickuppable).
