I wanna say that the reason marking a dragon as "Male" or "Female" is more uncomfortable than the Mars/Venus symbol is that the word reads as "This dragon is actually X," as opposed to the symbol reading as "This dragon functions as X."

A dragon's on-site sex is going to dictate its role in breeding mechanics no matter what, but that doesn't mean that a user's dragons need to abide by the expected or any binary. Its mechanical role shouldn't be so blatantly linked to a user's first impression of the dragon; the appearance and bio of a dragon should be able to freely speak for it. I'd prefer that the "gender" label was removed from beneath a dragon's name entirely, or once again represented by the Mars/Venus symbols.

I’m glad that the information about Akiri got onto the official site so that as many people as possible can know about it. I am very glad that what Akiri said has sparked multiple conversations about how it was not really an acceptable response. It was an excuse. To say something racist in grief or anger does not negate the thing that was said, or the underlying opinion that harbored it. What Akiri did was attempt to discredit the BLM movement by bringing up the “black on black violence” whataboutism. He didn’t say an outright slur, like a streamer saying the N word in a heated moment, but it is the same kind of action. 

The transparent “bad apples” argument here: “I became a Deputy Sheriff to protect people and save lives. I believe someone must be willing to stand between evil and those who cannot protect themselves. It hurts me to see people die who stood up to protect the defenseless. But, it hurts me even more to see those same people turn on the community or be deaf to their cries for help.” As someone else said, using “thug” but woke, lol. 

The donation is good. I wish Stormlight Workshop had done it before using it as a public apology bonus multiplier. I’m glad that no matter what, at least some money went towards a cause specifically endorsed by BLM. It’s police reform rather than abolition, or even just direct support of the current protests, but that is nitpicking. 

In the end, the sad thing is: This is one of the owners of Flight Rising. We can’t ask for him to be fired, we could only ever ask for him to resign, and this just isn’t that kind of company. It’s a pet site. The owner supports the police as an institution, and WAS a cop for 8+ years. As unfortunate as it is, if that’s not the kind of person you want to support, it might be time to think about not playing Flight Rising anymore. I know I am thinking about it. And it sucks, because I’ve been playing it for almost 7 years now; it has filled countless, countless hours and been a cornerstone of my internet activity in general. But I don’t feel like I have an avenue to help by educating someone who I feel contributes to the oppression of Black people, so maybe I have a moral requirement to stop supporting his business. I’m going to be thinking about this a lot, and I hope other people do, too. We shouldn’t have let it slide the first time. I’m glad things are changing.
