thinking about the time i got spray foam in my hair and one of the insulators was advising me about it. "don't touch it, let it set, then go home and use lots of conditioner - or horse shampoo - do you have a horse?" maybe there was a certain amount of joking lost in translation here but. do i have a horse?

this summer i'm reading ulysses for real. two summers ago I made it a quarter of the way in but i was reading on an ereader, and now I have a Real Copy. but right now? right now I've just realized something that will actually keep me reading infinite jest, so back in I go, at 60 ish pages where I left it a month or two back - because I do in fact remember almost all of what happens in those sixty pages, and about as well as I would anyway if I had just stopped yesterday

if I didn't have such an intensely disordered relationship to sleep i feel like all my other problems would be at least 50% easier to deal with. it's hard to find a job/buy groceries/hang out with friends when you have to sleep from 8pm to 2 am and then 9 am to 6 pm (same day) and then 12 pm (next day) to 3 am and then 7pm to 11:30 am and then etc. I'm either up in the middle of the night or I'm awake in the day but strung out as hell.

Didion is broadly less offensive than say HST to read on a sort of visceral level but once someone points out to you how conservative she is it's hard to pretend you can't see it. it's probably hard for us to imagine now that American Conservatism used to have people we might call "intellectuals" in it, and yet... "[My politics] are the logical product of a childhood largely spent among conservative California Republicans. [...] low taxes, a balanced budget, and a limited government [ etc ...] Had Goldwater remained the same age and continued running, I would have voted for him in every election thereafter." (political fictions, apparently) and of course in That One Essay "It seemed to the nineteenth century admirable, but not remarkable, that Chinese Gordon put on a clean white suit and held Khartoum against the Mahdi; it did not seem unjust that the way to free land in California involved death and difficulty and dirt." [etc. etc., something that no one ever seems to want to talk about]

The educated man pictures a horde of submen, wanting only a day's liberty to loot his house, burn his books, and set him to work minding a machine or sweeping out a lavatory. 'Anything,' he thinks, 'any injustice, sooner than let that mob loose.' He does not see that there is no difference between the mass of rich and poor, that there is not question of setting the mob loose. The mob is in fact loose now, and - in the shape of rich men - is using its power to set up enormous treadmills of boredom, such as 'smart' restaurants.

so i finished down and out in paris and london last night. pretty good read mostly - as a document - definitely some. uh shall we say outdated attitudes. (orwell is racist, he worked for the imperial police. what do you expect.) but the thing i like most is that when they're poor in paris they don't eat for like four days and then when they get some money it's like "we rushed out to buy a loaf of bread and a bottle of wine" and then conversely in britain everyone is subsisting on Tea and Toast with Margarine. and you're like. fuck yes. truly the european is an unusual creature.

just played Paratopic earlier. was good, would recommend. having thoughts again about "whether video games could be art" - brought on by the fact that the game more or less relies on you being familiar with the consensus for controls & the general conceit of video games broadly. but minimally I almost want to say anything that allows for optimal play is not art. something that demands engagement - the game has long (by % of a one-hour game) driving segments that have no "gameplay" per se and are the subject of many review complaints - might be getting closer.

honestly I like the whole beauty in the mundane schtick but sometimes you also have to be okay with the mundanity on its own terms
