Mobile workstation customers are arguably the most demanding of all laptop buyers, and certainly the least likely to see the dream of ultrabook slimness, 20-hour battery life, and raging horsepower packed into the same machine. That means the HP ZBook Studio G4 inevitably makes compromises (though not as many, we'd wager, as the dual-core-CPU'd ZBook 14u and 15u, which are aimed more at execs who need to view, but not create, complex models). To put it another way, we rewarded the ZBook 15 G4's speed and expandability with our Editors' Choice; the Studio, at least the non-DreamColor model seen here, falls an inch short.

But that doesn't take away from HP's achievement with the Studio. If you need serious performance with high portability, you need to check it out.

Dell Venue 10 Pro 5055 Tablet

As we said, Dell sent us the higher-end of two Venue 10 Pro 5055 configurations, with 64GB of flash storage and a 10.1-inch, 1,920x1,200 in-plane switching (IPS) display that made 1080p videos look bright and crisp. Its 1.33GHz (1.83GHz turbo) Intel Atom Z3735F processor kept its cool without a noisy fan.

For our performance charts, we pitted the Venue 10 Pro against three other "Bay Trail" Atom tablets running Windows 8.1: the Toshiba Encore 2 10$219.99 at Amazon, Lenovo ThinkPad 10, and Lenovo Yoga Tablet 2 10$329.00 at Amazon. The newer "Cherry Trail" Atom x7-Z8700 Microsoft Surface 3 rounded out our comparison crew.

As is usual with economical tablets, some of our usual benchmarks—like the 64-bit-only Cinebench CPU test and 4GB-RAM-required Adobe Photoshop image editing test—were nonstarters. But we compiled enough results to get a feel for the Venue's performance (spoiler alert: adequate if unexciting).

PCMark 8 is a holistic performance suite developed by the benchmark specialists at Futuremark. It contains several presets that simulate different real-world productivity and content-creation workflows. We use the Work Conventional scenario to assess overall system performance for office-centric tasks such as word processing, spreadsheeting, Web browsing, and videoconferencing. The test generates a proprietary numeric score; higher numbers are better.

Compared to the other slates, the Venue 10 Pro's battery life wasn't particularly impressive, as it was the second to fade out. Taken at face value, however, a smidge over 8 hours isn't bad—it's certainly enough to get through a school day with a bit left over for homework.

All in all, the Venue 10 Pro is an interesting product. On one hand, the Atom Z3735F is an older chip that's been around the block, and when you factor in a 32-bit operating system and no 802.11ac support, it feels like a tablet in need of a refresh. If Dell was pitching the Venue 10 Pro as a home consumer device or a mobile professional's travel companion, we'd be a little more critical of the component and feature selection.

On the other hand, as an educational product, there's considerable value in what Dell has put together. Students don't need bleeding-edge hardware, and compared to the likes of the Surface 3, we can't complain about the price of $429 with keyboard or $464 with keyboard and stylus.

We should also reiterate that a year of Office 365 comes with the Venue 10 Pro, which adds even more value. That's a useful package for students, though after the free year is up, their parents will have to pony up for an ongoing subscription.

Strictly as a tablet, the Venue 10 Pro is a tough sell. But as a 2-in-1 with the aforementioned accessories, Dell's new slate is something to consider. Kids will be bummed that there's not enough horsepower to play games like Mortal Kombat X or The Witcher 3, but for typing up reports, researching on the Web, and blowing off some steam with casual games, the Venue 10 Pro is an affordable option.

Furthermore, the reproducibility of the output power level is matched by the multi-wavelength reference storage capabilities of the Datacom Textron optical power meter.

2) The user may select either continuous wave or modulated (pulsed) output. The modulated output may be selected to match the frequency signatures (270Hz/1kHz/2kHz) required by fiber identifiers and other types of optical signal tracers via a switch inside the battery compartment.

The Datacom Textron laser source is powered by two AA-size 1.5 volt alkaline batteries providing at least 36 hours of operation. A combined wavelength and battery status LED indicator blinks when the batteries are low. These laser sources also incorporate an auto-shutoff feature that powers down the instrument if the buttons on the front panel is not depressed for 15 minutes. This auto-shutoff feature may be disables via the front panel controls.

*The AED Trainer 2 can be used with the AED Little Anne and Resusci Anne training manikins with Laerdal Link Technology. This technology allows realistic response to electrode placement on the manikin surface; these manikins also have an LED in the chest skin indicating the center of correct pad placement.

The LED lights up automatically when pads are attached. If an electrode is loose or incorrectly placed on the manikin, the trainer will repeat the voice prompt to apply the electrode pads.

NOTE: If using the AED Little Anne or Resusci Anne manikin with Laerdal Link Technology, electrode training pads with a white connector are required.
