no matter how little you think you know about history you shouldn’t beat yourself up over it because there is always someone who knows less than you and is more confident about it. someone once said that bridgerton was medieval to me

CITATION STYLES THUNDERDOME
#LOVE OF MY LIFE CHICAGO#here's the thing: footnotes are superior for tracking the details of citations as you read#i am not open to debate on this#also has the best formats for primary sources#i realize i am a historian and therefore a little biased but every time i have to go back to mla or apa for something i am pissed about it

#not to be an asshole historian and former Girl Scout in the notes but y’all this isn’t even remotely true#jewelry history yes. girl scout history no#gordon low founded the girl scouts after being inspired by lord powell’s boy scouts on a trip to england#which was a deeply colonialist nationalist military prep org#she did want to give girls access to skills they didn’t usually get to learn but it had nothing to do with marriage or losing a spouse#there was no pearl necklace involved either she had money

i feel so seen!!
(twitter thread)
#this is such a great article and i'm so glad it's circulating here#also really interested that so many people in the comments and tags are hypothesizing the same connections winer makes in the full article#even before having read it#like the nuances between gender detachment and agender/nonbinary identity and the co-construction of gender and sexuality#i'm currently writing a chapter on asexual and nonbinary history for a forthcoming book#these are really only together in one chapter because there's limited literature on both#and “the newer stuff (historiographically speaking)” makes sense as a thematic chapter#but i've been working on a conclusion using winer's work and other research on gender and asexuality to argue that they really do belong#in conversation with one another historically#like there's this great book called against sex by kara french which is technically about celibacy not asexuality#but she makes the fascinating point that in the historical record celibacy is often represented through non normative gender performance#like monks in dresslike robes and women without makeup#and celibacy itself is seen as a violation of both masculine and feminine gender roles at different points in history#and in different cultural contexts#anyway i love this stuff

Anon is kinda concerned with the state of the world, considering how this blog's language-related polls show that the majority of the audience is monolingual. We know English is statistically the most occuring native language on tumblr, but surely not all of the monolinguals are native English speakers? Do people just not pay attention in foreign language classes? Anon knows languages are not as fascinating to everyone as they are to anon, but surely they're not that much of an outlier as a polyglot?

Fishuary Day 1: Shark
okay i think ive mentioned this little guy enough times that he requires a back story: i got a new (old) shark book a while back and when i was flipping through it i saw this picture of a blue shark and i loved it so much and i thought it was so silly so i went to show my dad and he was like "he looks like his name is flopsy doofus" so now every single blue shark is flopsy doofus (but especially this one the Original) because LOOK AT HIM HES JUST SO FLOPSY DOOFUS <333333
reference photo under the cut :D
