a Patriotic tale...Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973)
Tumblr media
The filmmaker’s earlier attempt at a war film, “Haqeeqat”, dealing with the 1962 war with China, is still regarded by the pundits as the best attempt on the subject. It was also loaded with all the ingredients that make a landmark film: a good emotion-packed story, heroics, appealing locales, heart-rending lyrics, immortal compositions and their picturisation, deft editing and excellent cinematography, and performances by not only the lead but also secondary players. And it became a big box office hit. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the director’s second go in that direction, where the action became more aerial than a ground terrain: Indian Air Force operations during the 1971 armed conflict – this time with Pakistan.
Although the narrative did contain the elementary emotional tracks, they were somewhat hijacked by, undoubtedly, mind-boggling action sequences. The story ended with a Squadron Leader rescuing his girl from across the border in a hand-to-hand fight (the director succumbing to pressure from producer Ravi Anand and his financial supporters who felt that planes bombing and strafe of the enemy was too impersonal), resulting in a tame, unconvincing climax that made it turn turtle at the box office. And with that went the magic of Kaifi Azmi’s lyrics and Madan Mohan’s soulful compositions.
The film also had an interesting ensemble cast, led by Raaj Kumar (looking too old for a serving Squadron Leader); the director’s deadpan leading lady Priya Rajvansh in a double role, especially her crooning “Hai Tere saath mein nahin to kya” with intercuts of war planes; hardly visible Balraj Sahni; quickly discarded Vijay Anand, Amjad Khan, Amrish Puri, Parikshat Sahni, Padma Khanna, and the director himself. Actual fighter pilots, Flight Lieutenants Samar Shah and Manvir Singh, with others, participated in the shoot under the supervision of Wing Commander Gautam (awarded Mahavir Chakra for his handling of operations during the war).
What made the narrative breathtaking and thrilling were the action scenes in the air with sorties through aircraft like Suk hoi, Sabers, Mig 21, Gnats, Hunters, etc. that were deployed in Operation Cactus Lilly in the western sector by IAF during the Indo-Pak 1971 conflict while the army engaged the enemy forces in the eastern sector. It also helped the filmmaker with some simulating, incredible actual footage, highlighted the crucial role the IAF played both in the war and actual filming. Unfortunately, both engaging drama and melodrama was totally missing.
The narrative opens with a poetic rendering by the director, followed by shots of a raiding PAF airplane leaving a soldier dead, forcing SL Rajiv Shukla to take a vow: “Badla hum lenge, is jawan ki kasam, jawaab dene aaoonga, Hindustan Ki Kasam” by Manna Dey-Mohammed Rafi. The credits begin — ending with a party in an air force mess mainly to introduce a set of actors of various ages, shapes and sizes. Seemingly editor Jadhav Rao found hardly any space in the engaging warfare for romantic or emotional tracks. Jal Mistry’s brilliant cinematography failed to hide ace art director Sudendhu Roy’s shoddy handiwork that is most evident in the song picturisation supposedly inside a Pakistani Television Studio, though the Lata Mangeshkar rendered “Hai tere saath meri wafa” could have been a dream catch for any other heroine. Both the song and the composition are brilliant. Similarly, also forgotten is Manna Dey’s “Har taraf ab yehi afsane hai” picturised on Raaj Kumar. Also remains forgotten the other Lata number, “Duniya banana wale yehi hai meri ilteja”. Produced by Ravi Anand, and directorially assisted by Mukul Anand, it could be described as the finest tribute to commandants of the Indian Air Force.

Wo aa ke khwaab mein taskeen-e-iztiraab to de... (Mirza Ghalib 1940)
The mellifluous voice of Saigal Saab has an enrapturing power that always casts a spell over the listeners. The range of his voice has a span that goes from the very base notes – ‘Bina Pankh Panchhi Hoon Mein’ (Tansen) all way to the higher octaves as in ‘Prem Ka Hai Is Jag Mein Panth Niraala’ (President). Saigal Saab’s voice as the rare ability to effortlessly accord the right expressions to each word, and make it glow distinctly. All his renditions leave a lasting impression in the mind, whether it be a love song ‘Baalam Aaye Baso Morey Mann Mein’ (Devdas), or a lullaby ‘So Jaa Raajkumari So Jaa’ (Zindagi), or an inspirational song ‘Hat Gayee Lo Kaari Ghataa’ (Lagan), a bhajan ‘Suno Suno Hey Kishan Kaalaa’ (non-film), a children’s song ‘Ek Raja Ka Beta Le Kar’ (President), or a song full of melancholy and pathos ‘Bina Pankh Panchhi Hoon Mein’ (Tansen). Over time, many of his songs and ghazals have been rendered by other singers also, but none have been able to even come close to the expressive power of his voice. ‘Baabul Mora’, a song that has become the brand identity of Saigal Saab, has been sung by other singers over the decades, but none comes even close in the expression and rendition. And to think that this song was not filmed as a playback. Saigal Saab was said to be so moved by the words and the music of this thumri, that he insisted on singing it live in front of the camera. A truly remarkable feat, considering the way film shots are structured, and then pulled together to create a whole.
Here is a very dainty and delicate creation, with a wonderful play of words. The poet is attempting to somehow catch the attention of saaqi/beloved (or God), to somehow have her/Him be involved in an interaction. He is lamenting that the saaqi/beloved is unmindful, and maybe even dislikes him. And yet, he writes in the closing verse, as soon as she offered/requested an interaction, the poet became so nervous, he is unable to even respond. A very lovely short ghazal, that will surely steal into your heart.

Street Singer (1938) is a wonderful musical bonanza, that has two of the greatest singer-actors in it, in the person of Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi. What a wonderful ghazal it is. The ghazal itself is presented as a duet, and is rendered very simply, yet elegantly by Saigal Saab and Kaanan Devi. In this song, the two street singers meet the rich theatre owner for the first time – a meeting that will change their lives and destinies. The theatre owner’s role is played by Jagdeesh Sethi. (Folks can recall the film ‘Baat Ek Raat Ki’ (1962), where this very person, Jagdeesh Sethi has played a role of a rich film producer who takes fancy to a street performer (Waheeda Rehman), takes her under his care, and makes her a film star. Another variant to the theme of this movie, although the 1962 creation further develops as a murder mystery). Kaanan Devi looks beautiful and enticing in this scene, and one can clearly see that the theatre owner has taken an immediate fancy to her. Unmindful of this development in his mind, the two singers simply present a song to him. They are earning a livelihood, not knowing that their lives are going to change forever.
The ghazal is crafted by Aarzoo Lucknowi, and the music composition is by RC Boral. The words and the theme of the ghazal talks about finding contentment in life. The four verses, alternately sung by Kaanan Devi and Saigal Saab, all espouse the importance and characteristics of contentment in life. This theme is significant at this juncture in the movie. Manju and Bhulwaa are till now singing the songs that Bhulwaa is creating, and the things are going well between the two. After this meeting with the theatre owner, they will be offered to sing on stage. That will change the life style for these street singers, and their reactions to this change are different. The persona of Manju is taken in by the limelight and the euphoria of popularity as a stage artist, and forgets this theme of contentment that she so soulfully used to sing with Bhulwaa. And that is how their destinies start to take different paths.
The ghazal itself is a wonderful expression of this theme.

Forever Gorgeous...
Exuberant, vibrant, gentle, beautiful, sweet, and the list goes on and on. These are a few words that attempt to describe the owner of the mega-watt smile Madhuri Dixit. She has ruled million hearts right from ‘Abodh’ to ‘Aaja Nachle.’
She reined the world of Indian Cinema for two decades. It’s been 25 years and the smile has not even faded a bit. The sheer magic on her face bates the breaths of her fans and yes she has made all young and old dance to her sensuous moves. This beautiful diva now comes closer to one and all as she is all set for her next show on television and stun the audiences with her cooking skills.
Q Passion, glamour, glitz, hardwork, ability and expressions. A blend of which of these do you see in a successful actress? I feel a blend of everything is necessary. That’s because if you just passion or style it is not going to help to be a good actress.
Q Post ‘Jhalak Dikhla Jaa’ how has Indian television treated you? I am already doing one show for the ‘Food Food’ which is called ‘Maha Challenge.’ I have been appointed the lifestyle brand ambassador for the channel. We will have a cooking completion between eight men and eight women on the show. It’s won’t be just about cooking, it’s about knowing who cooks better men or women!
Q It’s going to be a unique show. Isn’t it? Although there are many other cooking oriented reality shows on various channels but may be the format of our show is a little different.
Q So did you always love cooking? (Laughing) Aahh! I must admit I learned cooking after marriage. My husband Shriram loves cooking and initially I found it difficult to cook, but I pulled it off. And I hate to admit that my husband cooks better than me! And before you ask me the next question I shall tell you that I am good at kande pohe, sabudanyachi khichadi and chicken tikka.
Tumblr media
Q Recently in one of the media conferences you said, you would prefer to cook for Shah Rukh rather than Aamir. Why it is so? Of course, it wasn’t meant to sound that way! They asked me who I wanted to invite for lunch and I replied Shah Rukh Khan, because we have mutual admiration for each other. Whatever I may cook for him, I know he is going to like it. Then they asked me about the other Khan’s, to which I replied why not invite them all! It was just a joke! There was nothing serious about it.
Q How do you react to people when they recognise you in Denver? Well, it’s always a wonderful feeling to be recognised. They come up to me and say that they are my fans or someone’s uncle is a fan of mine.
Q MF Hussain always referred you as his ‘muse’. You worked in his film ‘Gaja Gamini.’ How do you feel his absence? It is definitely a great loss. People always spoke about him and his art but, only some of us knew him personally and we found him to be a wonderful human being. I really do miss him a lot and always will.
Q There has been a void in Bollywood after the exit of actresses like you, Karishma, Kajol and Sridevi. What do you think? Well, I have never thought about it that way. There came a time when I decided that I had done all that I could have in films and I should get married and raise a family now. But yes, maybe people felt bad. With powerhouse actresses like Rani, Priyanka, Vidya and others I don’t feel there is any void.
I have admired Rani for her work, she is my favourite actress. After watching ‘Ishqiya’ I must say I was floored with Vidya Balan’s performance. Priyanka is young and has a long way to go.
Q How has this 25 years journey from ‘Abodh’ to ‘Aaja Nachle’ been? Great! It has been wonderful years. I can’t say that I regret anything. I have enjoyed every moment and feel blessed on having an opportunity to be an actress. To use my cliché, my glass has always been half full and not half empty.
Tumblr media
Q From amongst all the actors you worked with, who was your favourite? I will tell you one thing, I got along with everyone. There was never a problem with any of my co-stars. Even today when we meet there is a lot of respect, a lot of affection and warmth. That’s how I have always been with all of them.
Q But still if you had to choose one of them? Then I would name the person whom I have worked with in a lot of films. He has always been a very dear friend of mine – Shah Rukh Khan. We share a great liking for each other which is completely mutual and there is a lot of respect in our relationship.
Q So when do we see you both together next? I don’t know! When we performed together at the Filmfare Awards this year everyone got a chance to see the pairing all over again. I hope we could team up on screen soon as well.
Q There are reports of you buying a shopping mall in the US. How true is that? No, that’s a rumour! Why would I buy a mall and that too so far away in Florida?
Q Do such baseless rumours affect you? Not now! It’s a part of being in this profession and I have been here long enough. They don’t affect me but at some point you need to clarify. Like I said, it’s all a slice of life.
Q Have you signed any new film? Right now I haven’t signed anything. But it feels great to know that my fans would still like to see me in a film.
Q And what about ‘Ishqiya 2’ with Sanjay Dutt? These are just speculations. Nothing of that sort has been finalised.

Shah Rukh Khan involved in fight...
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan allegedly punched and slapped Farah Khan's filmmaker husband Shirish Kunder at a private party thrown by Sanjay Dutt. The fracas took place late last night at the Agneepath success party at a nightclub where Shah Rukh is said to have roughed up Kunder, who has been taking potshots at the actor and his mega budget film Ra.One on Twitter. The Jaan-E-Mann director reportedly left the party with a swollen face. The party also came to an end and Dutt and SRK left with the owner of the nightclub soon after. Shell shocked with the incidents of the night gone by, Kunder was expectedly jittery once slap-gate incident started picking up heat. "Everyone knows what really happened at the party; it isn't a hidden fact at all. Of course it was ugly and I was quite shaken up with what happened. When someone attacks you from behind and comes prepared with a set of bodyguards to protect his own self, you don't really have a choice, do you? "All I feel is that if at all there was so much pent up anger in him, he could have gone verbal. Getting physical hasn't reflected well on either of us," Kunder said tonight. Shah Rukh Khan tweeted in the night but made only an indirect reference to the episode. "Another long nite. Shooting for a public service msg film about education peace & harmony. Feels ironic when I read & see wot is being said," he said, without making any mention of the fracas. Kunder, the Jaan-E-Mann director, had left the party with a swollen face. The party also came to an end and Dutt and SRK left with the owner of the nightclub soon after. "Frankly, this is hardly the kind of attention that I want. In fact I am wary of any kind of attention, be it for something as wrong as this which was completely unprovoked or even something good for which I may have been responsible. I like to keep a low profile and Sunday's late night party was one of those rare instances when I actually attended a gathering," Kunder said. Farah spoke about the incident in a statement but denied they were going to pursue the matter with police. "Shahrukh has always told me that physical abuse is the worst way to sort out a problem, and that it means the person who's hitting has either a personal or professional crisis going on. So it saddens me to see him doing the same," Farah said in a statement. Kunder had earlier taken to his Twitter account to say: "Thanks for all your concern & wishes. We are very grateful. Contrary to rumours, we have no intention of filing a FIR or police complaint." Dutt, who was also present when the incident happened denied reports that he was also involved in the fight, saying he only tried to break up the fight. "When a fight takes place so everybody who is around is blamed. Sanjay entered to stop the fight. He had no fight or anything of that sort with Shirish," Dutt's spokesperson told PTI. Once very good friends, Farah choreographed SRK in several of his films and directed him in Main Hoon Naa and Om Shanti Om but their friendship soured after she cast Akshay Kumar in Tees Maar Khan in 2010. Kunder is reported to have said, "Shah Rukh punched and jumped on me. And he had three bodyguards with him. I don't know what got him. I was numb with shock so I couldn't react. He kept screaming at me, 'What do you think of yourself? I'll see to it that you're out of this industry." Shah Rukh's enmity with Kunder apparently stems from the days when he refused to do Kunder's Joker. Kunder, occasionally takes jibes at the actor on his Twitter page, recently calling his sci-fi Ra.One "a 150 cr firework fizzle". The other celebrities present at the party, however, have come out in support of King Khan, saying Kunder had it coming. "Shahrukh is supr rockin.. Good he gave it 2 shirish. people shud learn 2 b grateful to king khan, aftrall he has been so supportive 2 farah. Glad@iamsrk told shirish off n put him in place. srk has done so much 4 farah. they shud b grateful n not abusing srk (sic)," Ameesha Patel tweeted. "I was present at Sanj's party & Without Any Bias I Fully Support Shah Rukh (sic)," celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani tweeted. Dutt had hosted the bash at the popular Juhu nightspot to celebrate the successful opening of Agneepath.

Hindustan Ki Kasam (1973)
Tumblr media
Hindustan Ki Kasam is a 1973 war movie based on the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 directed by Chetan Anand.
The movie is different from other war movies in Indian cinema as it vividly describes the IAF's role in 1971 Indo-Pakistani war in the western sector.
The film starts with an air raid by Pakistan Air Force (PAF) on an Indian Air Force (IAF) airbase in the western sector in India. After the raid a pilot (Raj Kumar) takes an oath while standing near the body of a dead ground crewman - "Jawaab dene aaunga, is jawan ki kasam, Hindustan Ki Kasam" (we will avenge, we swear by this soldier, we swear by Hindustan). The credits start while the title song of the movie is played in the background (sung by the Mohammed Rafi and Manna Dey).
The movie revolves around the IAF's mission of destroying a PAF radar which blocks IAF pilots radios in combat. Indian intelligence plant Tahira (Priya Rajvansh), who is the fiancee of a PAF pilot (Amjad Khan). Tahira goes to Pakistan and starts working as a singer on Pakistan TV (PTV) studio (where the radar which jams the radio frequency of IAF jets is also kept). Tahira informs the IAF about the jammer. IAF asks her to leave the building in the night after her programme is done so that they can raid the building.
PAF's counter intelligence learns about her and they zero in on her on that very night. As soon her programme is finished the IAF air raids the studio while she is still inside. In the dogfight with Pak sabers Raj Kumar's jet is destroyed and he crashes. He radios for help and the IAF fighters destroy the pursuing Pakistani soldiers and their vehicles. The pilot and Tahira are evacuated. The movie ends with IAF's flypast on the Republic day parade in New Delhi, with the title song in the background.
