Now awhile back I posted a visible file on my YouTube where I realized, after playing it back, that my phone had picked up audio of my heart beating *from across a room*. Which was absolutely amazing. Per context, I had just hopped off a bike sprinting hard after a few coffees. So, still pretty remarkable, but my heart was pumping super hard.

Remembering that, I took this file.

The first clip is totally unedited and very quiet/noisy, but did pick up my heart beating with my phone about 3 feet off of my chest. The second clip is edited to confirm: yep. Three feet away and you can hear my heart pumping.

This kicked off a night playing with how far away my mic can be and still hear my heart, plus or minus some poppers to get it pumping. The raw audio on these is pretty much not worth listening to so here on these are edits. I'm only going to include the clearest ones. There's like 5 rejects to each of these but enough folks wanted to hear so I went to the trouble.

First I took a bunch of recordings with the app I usually use to record my heart. Most of these picked at least some beats but collected a ton of the noise outside the room and in the rest of my apartment. So I'll just drop my favorite of these clips:

Then I remembered an app I used awhile ago when my stemoscope was busted. It automatically boosts input. These files were easier to edit because it auto-filtered out extraneous noise.

This next one is possibly lowkey one of the most incredible files I've ever made. I'm holding my phone, it's about 2 feet away from my apex with the microphone pointed at my heart. The app boosted input by about x12 -- but other than that I made ZERO edits. No adjustments or additional editing. And I got this:

I was listening along, and with the excitement of what was happening and a hit of poppers my heart was absolutely exploding. And actually since I can, I 'reverse' edited this one; this is what it sounded like with no boost:

Just fucking unreal. Imagine sitting next to me and you can hear my literal heart pumping in my chest like this. I wouldn't buy it if it didn't happen to me.

Anyway. Those are the absolute best but I did get some other decent ones. This second app filters the phone mic as a directional mic, so it didn't work as well without my heart being vaguely in front of my phone--didn't realize this in the moment. Here are three little clips that worked okay, I like them especially because you can hear my breathing. Mind your ears for loud breath sounds.
