If you're lamenting the fact that you used to be able to shoot through a 500-page novel in like a day when you were in middle school and now you can't, it's worth bearing in mind that a big part of that is because when you were in middle school, your reading comprehension sucked. Yes, mental health and the stresses of adult life can definitely be factors, but it's also the case that reading is typically more effortful as an adult because you've learned to Ponder The Implications. The material isn't just skimming over the surface of your brain anymore, and some of the spoons you used to spend on maximising your daily page count are now spent on actually thinking about what you're reading!

(Old Lady Voice) The cities are so dangerous, think of all the crime! That's why I moved out to a crumbling house an hour drive away from any life saving medical services, where all cell phone service regularly stops working. Also it's at the end of a long, narrow, uneven driveway with two massive trenches on either side of it--no me and my husband have hip problems so we can't clear away any of the ice and snow but I'm sure your ambulance will make it fine, we drive our truck down it all the time. And yes the nearest town is run by a religious cult with a weapons cache and I immediately started drama with every wife and mother in that community, along with most of the priests, but you never hear about anyone looting Target out here! You can leave your car door unlocked when you go to the store!

It just makes a lot of sense why Marcille and Laios would be good friends, really, because Marcille Will Tell You What Is On Her Mind. If she doesn't like something, she throws a tantrum. If she's down to clown, she clowns like a champ. If she has an opinion, she voices it clearly and concisely. Laios knows exactly where Marcille stands in pretty much every topic.

On Marcille's end, she's down to clown more than people give her credit for. Laios said "yo let's play with these bones and rearrange them in funny ways" and Marcille joined right in. Like, yeah, she'll want to bonk his skull in sometimes, but aside from the monster and dungeon (well, she does have this one, just differently) fascination, she's pretty much in the same wavelength as Laios when it comes to most things.

Which is cool! Because they could've made them hostile siblings in law but they are besties actually.
