I know some of you think that Justin was just some band geek in high school that no one would think twice about, but in reality he was captain of the football team, played basketball, was on student council, played in the jazz band, and was just very well-known. He was the guy that fathers wanted their daughters to date.

The interesting thing is, with a song like “Skinny Love” [from For Emma, Forever Ago], the thing that nobody knows is that I’m singing from the perspective of someone I hurt— I’m yelling at myself for being uncourageous and unwilling to step up to the plate in that song. It’s embarrassing, which is why I ended up writing the song and it coming out the way it did.

People seem to play that song at their weddings a lot, which is kinda weird. It is a break-up song. I think they just hear the word love and then patience and kindness and all that stuff.

Birdy's talented in as far as she can play the piano and sing to a sufficient enough standard to be given a record deal. But not beyond that, imo. She's butchered every song she's covered and turned them into something portentous, melodramatic and dull. She's signed because her music will make money by taking songs that are unsaleable saleable by sapping them of anything interesting. She is not an artist. She's a glorified X-Factor contestant riding off the talent of actual artists.
The first part of your argument of her being just sufficient enough is all opinion based, like you said, and there's nothing wrong with that.
She didn't necessarily take unsaleable songs to make them saleable because most of the songs she has covered are very popular. Skinny Love, A Team, 1901, Shelter, White Winter Hymnal are all quite popular songs.
Did she use covers and her X-Factor fame to get her name out there? Yes, and now she is continuing her career as a music artist by creating her own music.
