I couldn't write All the Birds in the Sky from scratch now if I tried. But the me of 2013 couldn't have written The Prodigal Mother either.

Mr. Neil, I have perhaps the most important question I could ask here.

The core of writing advice has one thing. One, special thing to it. And that is: “Write. Write write write.”

But what COUNTS as writing? Surely writing a manual for a lawnmower has nothing to do with becoming a fiction writer.

But what about writing fan fiction? Writing out a dnd story with original characters? Does it just have to be publishable work in the most serious sense?

What counts as writing is writing. Learning how to express yourself clearly is everything. Writing a manual for a lawnmower that’s a good manual for a lawnmower will teach you a lot of about clearly telling people what things look like and how to do things in your fiction. No joke. Write.

#hugs are super underrated

i will never move on from this hug. the way that nick truly is, so obviously, recharging here, while also try to pour all of his love for charlie into this hug, and also give him reassurance after overhearing the conversation in the bathroom. it just makes me want to cry

his little scrunched up face bc he’s snuggled so deeply into charlie’s shoulder, and the way he’s holding onto him so tightly, like if he loosens his grip charlie will disappear

and making sure to hold onto him for long enough to make charlie feel all of the emotions and stuff

he also adjusts a couple of times to snuggle in even further, which is just the cutest thing istg

Alice, even if you never see this another artist, creator, writer may... as much as the visceral hate hurts, there are so many more out there who ADORE your work, who NEED your work, but they tend to be quieter about it because love, adoration, and depth is more personal so we don't scream and shout about it as loudly as those who hate do.

I absolutely guarantee you that you are helping and changing people's lives for the better and that will also tend to be more quiet, more deeply personal. So shift as much as you can from your hurt to focus on that. Because that is the reason we create!

We create to connect, to touch, to move others. Brene Brown talks about this quite a lot, in her books, her talks (find the YouTube video from her talk at 99u: Why Your Critics Aren't the Ones Who Count).

On a personal note, books, writing, stories, have always been my teachers. They're the reason I've worked in the publishing industry for more than 25 years, the reason I became an editor. One of the biggest personal discoveries of my life came through you and Heartstopper!!! Yep. I'm #demisexual 😘✌🏻

In addition, we watched it as a family, which was vitally important as we have a young Elle who saw herself represented for the first time!!! 😍😎😭

"When you are authentic and vulnerable and real... that's when you reach the people you need to reach, that's when you will be heard." Authors are always looking to reach a wider audience, make more money. This is where it starts! Write authentically, write authentic characters, say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done. Write with your heart and soul. Pour it all out onto the page. That's when your audience will sit up and listen to what you have to say. Have the courage to WRITE OUT LOUD. 📖📚✍🏻 . "It's not the critics who counts....the credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena....if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly..." Art is: Bravery. Courage. Vulnerability. Love. Art is about all of those things and it’s also about showing up and being seen. But when we’re creating we get scared because we know the moment we put ourselves out there, we’re going to see and hear things that make us question why we made the art in the first place. We don’t want to be seen if we have to deal with the critics. Do it anyway, make art anyway. “Tell them [critics], I see you, I hear you, but I’m going to do this anyway.” Because vulnerability is also the birthplace of all the things we crave, love, belonging, joy, trust, empathy, creativity, innovation. “When you armor up [against vulnerability] you shut yourself off from everything that you do and love.” Brené encourages her audience to shed their armor so that you can create what it is that you are meant to create and reach the audience you are looking to reach. “Without vulnerability you cannot create.” This is why I admire her message so much, when we get down to the vulnerability in art (writing) that’s when we really reach other people. And all that means is that YOU write what YOU want to write, even if it makes you vulnerable to critics, to readers, to anyone, even yourself. Sometimes life throws you curveballs! After getting over covid in January I spent February, March, and April going from one antibiotic to another. Plus the vaccines! I think my body was in stress overload and it took me well into May to feel like myself again (though I think that second shot helped my body recover!) 😳👑💎💫 .
