As Oak watches, Jude emerges from a carriage. Ten years into her reign, she doesn’t bother waiting for a knight or page to hand her down as would be proper, but simply jumps out. She hasn’t bothered with a gown today, either, but wears a pair of high boots, tight-fitting trousers, and a vestlike doublet over a shirt poufy enough that it may have been borrowed from Cardan. The only sign that she is the High Queen is the crown on her head—or perhaps the way the crowd quiets upon her arrival.

Cardan emerges from the carriage next, wearing all the finery she eschewed. He is in a black doublet as ink dark as his hair with lines of scarlet thorns along the sleeves and across the chest. As if the suggestion of prickliness isn’t enough, his boots come to stiletto points. The smirk on his face manages to convey royal grandeur and boredom all at once.

I'm not focusing much on jurdan as this is Oak and Wren's story but I am crying at every mention and appearance of them because I'm a simple girl and I love jurdan too much

Jude has always had to keep a strong countenance in front of the entire Elfhame so as to make sure no one can find fault or weakness in their mortal queen.

But when she is all by herself with Cardan she is able to let that guard down, show vulnerability and just be herself 🥹

As I read Prisoner's Throne, I become more and more impressed with a knowledge about Cardan that I didn't have when reading the three books, even though it was right in front of me the whole time: Cardan is loyal only to Jude. I think my lack of perception occurred because the books were from Jude's point of view, and although our girl is very perceptive in many aspects, her own way of seeing the world wouldn't include concluding a fact like this in its entirety, since Jude, accustomed to betrayal and even disappointment after a while, wouldn't perceive this, nor in relation to Cardan, who used to be the cruel prince.

From Oak's point of view, it becomes clear that Cardan is not only loyal only to Jude but also she is the only one he sees as family until Leander is born, and even that is somewhat dubious, since, given his history, if he had no other choice, Cardan would likely sacrifice him if it meant keeping Jude safe.

I love how Cardan turning into a snake lives on as a joke in the family.

Ok The Prisoner's Throne broke me, but you know what was the funniest part of the entire book?

Oak being the noisiest bitch in the entirety of Elfhame. That boy was always listening!

When he accidentally listened in to Jude and Cardan's private conversation in the prologue and in the end when Jude was with Cardan while he was recovering. LITERALLY EVERY TIME HYACINTHE AND TIERNAN WAS INTERACTING!!

No because he was INVESTED into Hyacinthe and Tiernan's relationship! Boy was carrying the entire fate of Elfhame and his relationship with Wren on his back for the whole book but damn him if he didn't give couple counseling to his otp any chance he would get! And he was always eavesdropping into their conversations!

Love that for him
