So here is an important conversation about relationships I was able to have with my kids thanks to the last episode of Supergirl.
Tumblr media
Kara has a friend. And this friend, Winn, is “in love” with her. And even though she gives him no indications that she feels the same way, he kisses her. She does not return the kiss, but later finds herself apologizing to him and trying to figure out how she “messed up.”
This was the point where I paused the show and turned to my 11yo daughter and 9yo son, and told them something I wish someone had told me when I was younger.
Just because someone likes you or has romantic feelings for you, you do not owe them anything. It’s important to be kind, but it is not your fault if someone has feelings for you that you don’t have for them. You don’t have to feel bad, and they shouldn’t make you feel bad about it. Their feelings are their feelings, and yours are yours, and you never have to apologize for that. If someone cannot value your friendship for what it is, they aren’t really your friend.
I’ve consistently seen Winn treat Kara poorly and act out subtle aggressions because he feels entitled to more than friendship from her, in spite of zero indications on her part that she is interested in romance. I hope the writers address it, and address why she feels guilty. Given the overall girl-power themes of this show, I actually think they might? Fingers crossed.
Either way, it was a great talking point to have with my kids. Almost as great as when I said, “The actress who plays her boss? She’s married to Han Solo in real life!” They were SO EXCITED. (And also said, “Wow, they must be SO RICH!”)

I am a firm believer that my thoughts and the way I think about myself impacts my entire life and creates my experience of the world. And if I am beating the drum of … ‘Not good enough,’ then that’s where I’ll be stuck.

I read the bulk of Sinner in a day but had to stop several times to calm my heart. My brother was an addict and his choices have tormented nearly 20 years of my life (I am only 27). He and Cole share so many of the same qualities. It was difficult to read this magnified version of him. Painful and scary. What an untidy character: loud, selfish, charming... Cole was very well written and I was really impressed by how you handled his drug addiction and the effect it had, as well as Isabel's role.
Dear themusicourcollisionsmake,
This means a lot.
This letter was tucked inside every advanced copy that went out:

A lot of readers think this is a novel about addiction; it’s really a novel about living beside someone with addiction. I said it was the truest novel I’d ever written, and I genuinely hope the optimism inside its pages is as true as the dark chapters.
I hope you find a way to find peace with your werewolf brother, or apart from him. It’s harder to be a human, but, as I’m sure you already know, humans are where the happy endings are at.

This is inspired by my friend Jon Skovron’s posts about how he has transitioned to a full-time writer. I always find other writers’ schedules fascinating, so, here’s mine.

A number of questions just turned up in my ask box that dealt with anxiety. Rather than just pulling one of them, I decided to answer all of them. Because the basic question was: “I have anxiety. Have you had it and what did you do?”
I have had anxiety. I suffered a serious bout of in…
