a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?

do you like whump? And if you do whats your favorite trope?
I don't always gravitate to whump but I do love myself some melodrama.
Favorite trope though...failed suicide attempts.
I love injuring characters for dramatic effect but it hits all the more when it's self inflicted. There's so much baggage that comes from living through a mental spiral to the very bottom or a self sacrifice they didn't intend to see the end of. Just the idea of living on when you didn't want to drags up so many emotions from the character suffering and the people around them. Slow, painful recoveries are another favorite of mine and the two compliment each other very well, the whumpee being under careful watch while they heal, both victim and caretaker faking smiles to put on a brave face for the other.

"..Are you sure we're going the right way?"
"C'mon, have a little faith in me, I'm an expert at reading maps!"
"..how long has it been since you've read a map..?"
"Uh... I would say a.. couple years?"
"How many, Silas?"
"..15.."
Amne glared at Silas. "Oh great, so we're definitely lost."
"No, we're just a.. little off track!" Silas replies, fumbling with the map in his hands.
Amne tapped her foot as she watched Silas attempt to psychoanalyze the map. Even if she maybe.. kinda.. really liked Silas, he was still a dumbass at times.
"Oookay.. we might be lost." Silas finally said after a bit.
Amne groaned. "Damnit, where's Lua when we need them.."
"I thought you two still had.. bad blood after.. ya'know.. the whole incident..?" Silas said hesitantly.
"We aren't kids anymore, Silas." Amne started. "We.. worked it out, I guess.."
Silas gave her a look. "That doesn't sound like you or Lua-"
"Can you just focus on getting us back to Celestial!?" Amne shot back before immediately back tracking. "Sorry it's just.. I'm a little on edge right now.."
"Hey, it's alright." Silas replied with a smile. "It's been a bit intense recently, let me just get us back home and then we can-"
Silas abruptly stops as him and Amne both turn to the darkness of the forest where a slight rustle of leave was heard.
"..what was that..?" Amne asks slowly.
"Maybe it was a squirrel..?" Silas replies hesitantly.
"That sounded a lot bigger than a fucking squirrel.." Amne says, slowly drawing her dagger.
Silas glances her way, his face growing stern. "Are you sure you need that..?"
Amne looks at him. "I'm not risking it."
Silas just nods and takes a step back, allowing Amne to prepare to attack if necessary.
Another rustle of leave is heard, only this time closer. Amne tenses up, ready for a fight..
…
..except that doesn't happen.
—————
Karyme had a life before she ‘died’, not a pleasant one by any means, but a life nonetheless.
With a life comes people, good and bad, in Karyme’s case, more bad than good.
I mean, even with all the bad, a certain someone stood out in what remained of her memories.
A girl who always had her back.. a girl who supported her every decision..
A girl who was Karyme’s most trusted friend.
Violet Grimm.
The girl who single-handedly supported my plan to kill myself.
The girl who was standing right in front of me.
—————
Frozen.
She couldn’t move.
Amne always hated eye contact, it felt.. awkward to her.
Yet, her eyes remained fixated on her.
She couldn’t look away.
Her legs started moving back, bit by bit.
She kept inching back until her instincts kicked in.
Amne may be a fighter..
..But Karyme was a runner.
—————
Her feet were moving faster than they ever had, and she was sure she was deep into the woods now.
Yet, her instincts kept yelling at her, not allowing her to stop.
She had to get away, she had to-
Amne blinked, coming back into control.
She slowed down until she stopped against a tree, breathing heavily. She clutched her chest, feeling her frantic heartbeat.
She just had to breathe, and everything will be fine..
She glanced up, taking in the scenery, the tall dark trees surrounding her.
She felt a weird sense of Déjà vu, but she didn’t pay mind to it.
She couldn’t, not after that.
What were the chances that out of anyone who could've seen her, it had to be her?
The one person who actually still cared about her.
And what did she do? She ran, like a coward.
For Selyna’s sake, how could she-
“Not a very happy reunion, huh?”
Amne froze, again.
She slowly glanced up, her gaze locking on him as he spoke.
“Miss me, hun?” He asked, extending his arms as if he was expecting a hug.
Amne didn’t say anything for a second..
Then she screamed.
She stumbled back, falling against the tree which knocked the wind out of her. She pushed herself up against the tree, trying to get away from him.
He only smiled at her, and then he was gone.
Amne curled in on herself, heading her erratic heartbeat in her ears and her quick breaths.
The air that once traveled through her lungs with ease stopped as if a barrier was blocking it from reaching her.
She began to hyperventilate, and the lack of air mixed with her heightened emotions triggered that old feeling she once experienced.
She was alone, not as Amne, but as Karyme.
—————
Silas was, for a lack of better words, losing his fucking mind.
He really wished it was a damn squirrel he heard.
Now in the present, as he watched Amne run off without a word, he had the realization that Amne and this girl had a history.
Amne.
His Amne.
The girl with no memory that he was just supposed to lead into the afterlife.
The girl he fell for after only a few weeks.
The girl he vowed to love and protect for as long as he was allowed to.
She was gone so fast it was like she was never there.
Now, he had a choice to make.
While his heart yearned to chase after Amne, his brain told him that he couldn’t let this girl leave knowing what she did.
The girl was frozen in place, just like Amne had been moments before. She opened her mouth as to speak, but no sound came out, for she fell unconscious instead.
Silas was about to go towards the girl when he saw Lua standing there, clearly the one responsible for causing the girl to pass out.
Lua only looked at Silas sternly. “What did she see?”
“Too much.” Silas replied quietly.
Lua nodded, then gave him a look. “Where’s Amne.?”
Silas looked behind him, his body screaming at him to go find her. “I.. she ran off..”
Lua looked surprised, then slightly concerned. “Well what the null are you still doing here, go get her-“
Lua was cut off as a noise rang out deeper into the woods.
A scream. Not one of injury or devastation, one of pure fear
Silas’ blood ran cold. He knew that scream all too well..
Lua immediately snapped into action. “Go get Amne now, I’ll take care of this one!”
Silas hardly managed a nod before he took off running, leaving only Lua and the unconscious girl.
Lua looked down at the girl with a cold gaze.
“Sorry, Amne’s with us now.” They said as they got to work.
—————
Silas was out of breath as he kept running. He tried to mentally pinpoint where the scream came from, but it wasn’t an exact location he could think of.
He relied only on what his heart was telling him.
And that worked.
Silas came to a stop to survey the area when he heard something else. It was much quieter than the previous scream, but still audible.
Sobbing.
..Amne..
Silas’ feet dragged him towards the noise until he found the source. He found Amne there, curled up against a tree, and making sounds that he could only describe as frantic.
He immediately thought the worst had happened and he found himself closer to her, kneeling down to her level as he reached a hand out.
Normally, Amne would lean into his touch, or maybe shy away a little..
He didn’t expect her to flinch away as if he were a danger to her.
Now that he was closer, he could more clearly hear what sounded like Amne gasping for air.
Silas new something was really wrong, but what was it?
“Hey.. Amne, it’s me, are you-“ Silas started slowly before being cut off by Amne’s frantic movements.
She was curling in on herself, making her seem so small. Her feet dragged through the dirt as she tried to push herself more into the tree and farther from Silas.
Silas was stumped. He didn’t know what was going on, or what to do to help. He didn’t like not being able to help, especially when it came to Amne, but she wasn’t even letting him near her.
Despite knowing better than to press Amne, the noises she kept making were actually starting to scare him. She sounded like she was in pain, maybe even injured, and Silas couldn’t let her hide stuff like that from him.
He slowly reached out, wanting to just hold her and check her over when a sudden voice stopped him.
“Silas!”
Silas turned towards Lua as they ran up, kneeling down as Silas was.
“What-“ Silas started until he saw Lua studying Amne’s form. “..I don’t know what wrong with her-“
“For Selyna’s sake..” Lua mumbled. “She’s having a panic attack, a pretty bad one it seems.”
It clicked. Of course, Silas knew what those were, he had just never actually seen one happening..
He looked back at Amne, then at Lua. “..what do we do..?”
Lua sighed. “Let me handle this, just.. stay here.”
Silas slowly nodded as Lua started talking.
“Amne.” Lua said as Amne remained curled up. “Amne.” They repeated, only this time taking a clear hold of Amne’s hands.
Amne’s head shot up, and she looked at Lua with a distress expression.
“Listen, you need to breathe, you’re having a panic attack and you need to breathe.” Lua stated, exaggerating the word ‘breathe’.
Amne only let out a pained whimper in response, one that made Silas feel terrible. He had never seen Amne looked so.. scared..
Was this her life before they met.?
“Focus on me, Amne.” Lua started up again. “Just me, and when I count, you breathe along, okay?”
Amne looked at Lua and slowly managed a nod.
“Alright, you’re gonna breathe in, hold it, and then breathe out, and then we’ll repeat.” Lua instructed. “Okay.. ready?”
Amne nodded slowly.
Lua nodded back and started counting to which Amne started to follow along. There were a few bumps and fails, but Amne’s breathing slowly started to even out.
Silas just sat there, feeling a tad bit useless that he couldn’t really do anything, until as idea popped into his head.
He slowly took ahold of one on Amne’s hands, leading it towards his chest where he placed it. He thought that maybe the steadiness of his own heartbeat might help her.
Amne glanced at him, her eyes giving him a silent ‘thank you’.
Lua just kept counting, and Silas offered small words of reassurance as Amne calmed. Her own heartbeat scowled, and it became easier to breathe.
Finally, Lua seemed satisfied and stopped counting, squeezing Amne’s hand as she managed to breathe normally on her own. “There you go, just keep your breathing steady..”
Silas glanced at Lua in a bit of surprise. It felt like just yesterday Lua and Amne hated each other, and now, Lua was softly talking to Amne.. it was a change for sure.
Amne’s gaze drifted to Silas, and he offered her a sincere smile. Amne frowned, which surprised Silas until she sunk into his arms, her face buried in his chest.
Silas’ hands slowly took their place and he hold her close as Lua gave him a look.
“Everything’s fine, for now anyways..” They mumbled.
“What about.. her.?” Silas asked, referring to the girl.
“Left her in a busy-ish street and destroyed any memories she had tonight.” Lua replied. “Someone should have found her by now.”
Silas nodded, the looked down at Amne. “Who was she..?”
Lua frowned. “Not my place to say.” They glanced at Amne for a moment. “She’ll tell you once she’s ready.”
Silas signed but accepted the answer. “So now we..?”
“We go home.” Lua said. “The others are waiting.”
Silas nods, and nudges Amne softly before they both stand up along with Lua.
“C’mon, we’ve done our job, let’s get home.” Lua says as they open up a portal.
The three make their way through the portal into the snowy place they call home, but Amne can’t shake the feeling that someone is watching her as the portal closes behind her.
