SINIGANG: A Moral Lesson from Marie Aubrey J. Villaceran’s “Sinigang”

Moral values define what is humankind. Moral values empower us as a human. These values are the basis of almost all religions. During our childhood times, we are taught about the good habits, values, and manners by the elders at home and school. Some of the most significant moral values are kindness, honesty, truthfulness, selflessness, compassion, and love.

The story SINIGANG shows a great moral value through its hardness in reality, and the lesson I got from the story is, we all made mistakes when we commit stupid deeds. Throughout our lives, we committed mistakes that we either be grateful for or regret. Oftentimes, it’s the latter. Just like in the story of Liza, where she and her father were emotionally separated. The reason behind it? Mistake. Some light mistakes, but oftentimes, critical mistakes.

I know how it feels to be in a family dealing with that kind of problem in the story. We are all people who make mistakes but the thing is we have the chance to decide whether to make the right decision or not. We can never say “Hindi ko sinasadya” because adultery is a choice, but we should remember that we have the ability to make our own decisions and we should at least consider other people before making a decision.

Forgiving and moving forward is the last thing I learned. We have to be sincere that we regret doing such a thing and never do it again. It takes time to forgive, but the lesson it taught us can never be forgotten. Yes, there will be scars that will remain forever but we have to accept the fact that our life is not only about rainbows and flowers. This story really taught me to forgive and let go of my grudges against anyone.

That was the lesson I took away from the story “Sinigang”. It will teach every reader the importance of having a strong foundation between family members, respecting, being strong, apologizing, and forgiving.
