Who The Heck Is “Suzy?”

This is an information post on the character of Suzy in Undertale. This post serves as a source for anything about the ‘Suzy’ character that we can gather at this time. 

There are lots of theories, but that’s not what this is for. I’ll try to keep even my personal opinions and theories to myself, and try to boil it down to the hard facts and give my best answer to the question: ‘Who the heck is “Suzy?”

Tl;dr: Nobody is really sure, but we have a few specifics.

Where Can I Find Suzy?

You can’t.

Even using the cheat engine to skip through all the unfinished rooms, even tearing the game apart with hacking tools and decompilers to look for their monster information, their obj_ files, their sprites … You can’t meet Suzy right now.

You just can’t.

Fun And The Clamgirl 

There is only one scenario where you can hear about Suzy. You hear about her secondhand from her ‘neighbor.’ We call this neighbor ‘clamgirl,’ because that’s the name of their sprite in the files. She never gives us her name and we have no better way to indicate her unless we say ‘that girl who talks about Suzy,’ and that’s a mouthful.

You meet clamgirl in the waterfall ‘safe’ area, in the section that leads to Gerson’s shop, Undyne’s house or the blook farms depending on what exit you take. There are a few conditions that need to be met before you can meet the clamgirl.

Your LOVE cannot be too high.

Your ‘fun’ value must be between 80 and 89.

When you start up a game of Undertale, or reset, your file is assigned a random ‘fun’ value. You can check this value in the .ini file, in the Undertale SAVE area.

When your fun value is between 80 and 89, either through luck or by manipulating the files (just changing the number in the .ini file is NOT enough) the clamgirl will appear, and you can talk to her.

Default Clamgirl Dialogue

When the game first came out, the clamgirl had a set of dialogue options, just like any other overworld NPC. Depending on circumstance, this dialogue changes. I have pictures of most of these, but some of them I do not, and I will have to resort to tearing the dialogue from the strings.

The first time you talk to the clamgirl, before you have finished the game, she says this:

If you talk to her again without leaving the room, she says this:

If you talk to her again after having killed Undyne, she says:

* I sense a disturbance in&  the nearby aura…/

* I think you should leave&  that girl alone./%%

If you talk to her after having completed the pacifist ending and having talked to her before:

If you go back and talk to her after beating the game on pacifist, without talking to her the first time, she says:

* I wanted to tell you about&  my neighbor’s daughter./

* But you walked right by me&  before I could tell you./

* Fate has decided that I&  should not tell you./%%

Patch 1.01 Dialogue

When Toby updated to patch 1.01, some of the clamgirl’s dialogue changed.

When you talk to the clamgirl a second time, an extra piece of dialogue is added to the clamgirl’s regular speech. 

The post-pacifist dialogue, where you spoke with her before and come back to speak again, changes slightly.

“Don’t Forget”

Starting with the 1.01 patch, there is a special picture in sans’ lab that you only see by fulfilling certain special conditions.

This condition for seeing this ‘don’t forget’ message is: having talked to the clamgirl.

What Do We Know About Suzy?

Suzy is a kid, about Frisks’ age.

They’re a girl.

They live in the capital, with at least one parent.

We never meet them over the course of our adventures. (aka, they are NOT monster kid, they are NOT a reincarnation of the yellow human SOUL in mettaton [if you’re one of the people who subscribe to that theory], or any other possible mistaken identity twist)

There is, if the clamgirl is to be trusted, some undefined ‘destiny’ that connects her to Frisk.

Somehow, speaking to the clamgirl who talks of nothing but Suzy, causes the ‘don’t forget’ event in sans’ lab.

Who The HECK Is Suzy?

Hell if I know. But whoever she is, she’s important.

SEPT 21st 2018 UPDATE:

In the Switch release of Undertale, the clamgirl’s post-pacifist scene changes drastically at ‘fun’ level 81.

In it, upon walking up to the clamgirl and talking to her, she turns gray and her sprite changes to something more sinister and strange-very similar to gaster followers or the goner kid-and the post-pacifist music cuts off. When the convo ends, she vanishes with the same sound effect that the ‘mysteryman,’ which you need fun value 66 to find in Waterfall does.

crack prediction (deltarune chapter 3+4 spoliers ahead, you have been warned):

not sure if anyone else has voiced this prediction, but i think the roaring knight is akin to the amalgamates to where (this is completely assuming the knight is dess btw) we’ll truly end up working with the knight to fight the bigger badder threat, and she will be recruited to the team.

but the thing is she will always be in limbo within the dark and the light. she may not be all there, but she knows kris, and kris knows them, and that’s why carol is working with kris. i also believe with this theory/prediction that carol is an absolute red herring.

with her being in limbo, i believe this creates a really big problem, if the dark world would cease to exist at the end of the game, because that means the roaring knight will completely cease to exist. and that’s what carol is trying to figure out how to do without completely wiping dess off of the face of the earth.

and that’s also why i think that the roaring knight is trying to create more dark fountains and cause a roaring. that limbo, i mean. there could be a part of dess in there that’s trying to get the attention of everyone around her. trying to get out of the limbo for good, while also embodying the mind of, well, a roaring knight, trying to cause a roaring. it’s a catch-22.

now for my questions that i would love discussion with:

1. is it possible for a lightner to be consumed by darkness?

2. would we go against the roaring knight again and if so would it be possible to kill them/her? do you think kris can/will purify the knight?

i highly doubt anyone will see this but i will, i will come back and revisit this

hm, but ralsei has been known to lie/sugarcoat some things. but we learn in chapter 4 there’s all this knowledge he’s been keeping from a few of us. he basically lost his cool in chapter 2 when he watched in horror as berdly was about to create a dark fountain, which completely caught everyone by surprise. berdly was possibly going to accidentally cause a roaring. if there’s one thing ralsei doesn’t know tho, judging by the dialogue in chapter 4 when the roaring knight stabs into the ground 5 times to birth a titan, is how to defeat a titan.

the roaring knight is implied to be able to travel between worlds, as we see with undyne being whisked away by the roaring knight to the light world. if they were to create a fountain so easily they had to have been a lightner. or something in between.

now that does make me wonder, would the roaring knight turn to stone then? what about the titans?

maybe it’s something worse? what if the darkners, instead of becoming stone, they become eldritch horrors?

ralsei explains in chapter 3 that darkners are what lightner objects become indistinguishable and can transform beyond a certain level of darkness. this plays in part with the real world where humans have the mfun ability to conjure up missing pieces of a picture when it’s too dark to see, and they can definitely get…horrifying at times. ralsei will go out of their way to make things more family friendly, so i imagine that could be a set up for something in the future.

and to add to where i said “she knows kris, and kris knows her” that’s to say that is the case, and given that we don’t know much from kris’ and the knight’s relationship, besides that kris doesn’t want to fight them, it’s could be strongly implied that kris is trying to SAVE the roaring knight (that would be an interesting parallel between the true pacifist route of undertale, considering u have to SAVE asriel)

anyways those are my thoughts, if i’m missing anything i’d like to know

sorry if i'm gonna be quiet for a while. my country recently introduced laws that make it so that in order to use social media to the fullest (not being able to view ns/fw content and in a few cases, not even having access to dms), i HAVE to give the sites my id/face scan.

The inability of a certain subset of blockheaded fans to notice Kris's gender is so. This is a game which places a nonbinary protagonist in a narrative that has them struggling explicitly with how much control they are allowed to have over their own life, whose best friends are a girl who is gleefully unfeminine and a boy who has no idea who he's supposed to be but sure seems to like being pretty, after the first few seconds of the game consisted of us trying to create our own form and then being told point blank "no one can choose who they in this world," where the above three children are all being railroaded into and struggling to escape their roles in a religiously per-ordained questline that we know ends very badly for them. If you think gender is not being employed here in a way that is specific, intentional, and thematically relevant then you are not serious
