bc despite all the pain and suffering, there will always be life left to carry on. and we can make new friends and write songs about the beauty of our natural world and play together. bc the suffering, despite everything, does eventually end. it's never eternal, and a new day, in a world, will always begin.

On the idea of Theseus's Ship: in the end, it's still his, isn't it? It was known as Theseus's, and it will continue to be known as Theseus's.
Even after he has returned to the ground which grew the wood of the hammer used to nail the ship's frame, Even after generations of new wood have rotted and the sails are rags clinging to threads, Even after millennia,
it will still be Theseus's Ship.
Goodnight, Phosphophyllite.

i love love love how ichikawa is able to depict such human emotions in inhuman characters. i know the thing that ties the three races together is their common ancestor, humanity, but arguably the Least human of them is the gems. but this scene resonates soooo much w me
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this depiction of self destruction is like . exactly what it feels like . the gems’ physical properties are so different from humans, aside from appearance , but this is just aahhffhgh such a good depiction of this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and then . sensei standing there . the gems standing there. the thing that makes phos special, and eventually “human” are these strong feelings they have. the other gems are scared or wary or don’t understand bc phos is Such a unique case. they’ve probably never seen a gem lose it to this extent, and they’ve definitely never had a gem made up of so many different parts, especially not a metal alloy.
but sensei has lived with humans. his purpose was to pray after humans pass away. he’s probably seen the grief humans go through when losing a loved one. he sees this humanity come through phos. he may be the only one that gets how they’re feeling

Land of the Lustrous is a great series for reading comprehension because characters will straight up lie about the way their world works and its left to the viewer to observe that what they're saying is incompatible with what we're seeing.
