HEADCANON | MENTAL ILLNESS
narcissistic personality disorder ( npd )
any one person that is suffering from npd will show a pervasive pattern of grandiosity ( in fantasy or behaviour ), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five ( or more ) of the following:
lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognise or identify with the feelings and needs of others
while izaya does recognise the feelings of others, given that he takes pride in understanding humans and their reactions to certain things. yet, instead of giving the person what they need to feel better he is quick to laugh, mock, or even scorn the person for what they are feeling, but he doesn’t go as far as to full on bully them, instead it is all playful banter on his end.
however, because his actions may go a bit far it can often get confused as to why he actually did whatever it was, but if he manages to make someone reconsider their actions it doesn’t change his view toward them. if anything, it makes him amused by how quickly human emotions/feelings can change. he is also good at “faking” many emotions when necessary or to simply look “normal” but all in hopes that it will provide something for himself later on.
has a grandiose sense of self-importance: e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognised as superior without commensurate achievements
has a sense of entitlement: i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favourable treatment or automatic compliance with his expectations
is often envious of others or believes others are envious of
requires excessive admiration
izaya believes that the world around him needs him, simply because without him and what he does for people things would simply become too mundane and certain things would never come about, or happen in the wrong way.
in addition, izaya wants things to happen according to how he thinks they should because he believes his intelligence is superior to those around him ( while he isn’t fully wrong on that ), and that they should do as he wants. he takes pride in being the puppet master, even from behind the scenes.
finally, he is quick to be hurt when he is not involved in some form and will show his displeasure by means of verbal venom toward someone, or pretend to not be bothered. the world goes around him in his mind, or at least it should and when it doesn’t, it makes things difficult for him to understand why. continuing that thought, of believing he is better than others and should be the centre of everything, he also feels and believes that those below him are envious of what he can do.
is interpersonally exploitative: i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends
shows arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes
believes that he is “special” and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people
it is not outside of izaya’s character to use and take advantage of others for his own gain. while not always direct about his actions, he does like to be subtle but it can become clear after the events, or even later on when the other realises what he had actually done. this goes back to his pride in being the puppet master, he likes to think of people as playthings, he will use them until they have no use for him and then toss them aside when someone new comes along.
he also is known for making it seem like he wants to help someone, and will even do such, but then turn on that person by using their knowledge for his own personal use whatever it may be. izaya is also the type to believe that because he holds knowledge on so many people and can blackmail anyone at the drop of a hat, that he is above certain laws and rules.
izaya likes to also manipulate people by means of their emotions and use guilt-tripping actions to get the reaction he wants. he is very good at pulling out a person’s weakness simply by allowing them to gain his trust, then he turns that around on them.
depressive narcissism
narcissism and depression are believed to sometimes occur together, probably because the narcissistic personality is incapable of developing true feelings of self-worth or intimacy with others. people with narcissism generally rely heavily on the care and attention of others for their feelings of self-worth, such that when that attention is withdrawn, they might fall into depression.
the causes of narcissism are believed to stem from neglect or abuse in infancy or very early childhood, so narcissism and depression might occur together due to the irreparable damage these early experiences might have had on the narcissist person's self-esteem. some believe that the narcissist’s extreme sense of self-involvement makes it difficult for him, not only to experience empathy with another’s needs but to fully perceive the existence of other individuals at all.
deep inside, the narcissist hates himself and doubts his own worth. he deplores his desperate addiction to narcissistic supply. izaya judges his actions and intentions harshly and sadistically. he may be unaware of these dynamics – but they are at the heart of the narcissistic disorder and the reason the narcissist had to resort to narcissism as a defence mechanism in the first place. this inexhaustible well of ill will, self-chastisement, self-doubt, and self-directed aggression yields numerous self-defeating and self-destructive behaviours – from reckless driving and substance abuse to suicidal ideation and constant depression.
it is the narcissist's ability to confabulate that saves him from himself. his grandiose fantasies remove him from reality and prevent recurrent narcissistic injuries. many narcissists end up delusional, schizoid, or paranoid. to avoid agonising and gnawing depression, they give up on life itself.
