Maybe being together on Christmas, if you’re lucky
One of the hardest things about military relationships is never being able to spend exciting events or holidays together. It’s knowing that every other couple is together for all of these, and more, and trying not to be jealous (but still being jealous). It’s making plans to be together for a certain holiday but those plans falling through because he suddenly has to work those days. It’s the disappointment, and reluctantly accepting the fact that you are about to spend yet another holiday alone. It’s the “wish you were here”’s that you exchange over the phone, on that day you were supposed to be together but aren’t.
Military relationships can be defined by one word - sacrifices. As milsos, we make so many sacrifices, big and small, every single day. This post is just highlighting one of the many sacrifices we have to make to be with our significant others. All you milsos out there – you’re not alone. You’re not the only one spending your birthday alone wishing your boyfriend could be there with you; I’ll be doing it too, next month. I know it’s easy to feel alone when nobody nearby can understand what you’re going through, but just remember there are tons of us all over the country - and the world - who are going through the exact same things as you. Just do your best to stay positive and look forward to the next time you two will be together.
I know Tumblr tends to be very US-centric, but there is something happening in my country that I absolutely have to share.
Soon, Brazil will host presidential elections. These are the first elections since the impeachment of our last president Dilma Rouseff.
The leading candidate is currently Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro is a man who has made racist, sexist, and homophobic claims such as, “I would rather my son die in a car accident than be gay,” and, “my sons would not date black women as they were well educated.” He even said to a woman that she was, “so ugly” that she, “didn’t even deserve to get raped.”
A few decades ago, when Brazil was under a military dictatorship, the government tortured many people for speaking out against the regime. Bolsonaro has said that, “their only mistake was not killing those people.”
However, something incredible has been happening.
A movement called Mulheres Unidas Contra Bolsonaro (Women United Against Bolsonaro) has been surfacing. The hashtag #EleNão (#NotHim) has been getting popular and gaining international attention.
Yesterday, women all over Brazil (and the world!) protested against Bolsonaro.
Here are some pictures.

You spend most of your child and teen years being told how precious your youth is and not to waste it but also given very little power over how to spend your time.
No they don’t, my boyfriend is in the army so he goes months without seeing his cat and when he comes home the cat goes crazy and purrs while running against him.
Do cats forget their owner even when they're away from them for a few months but owner goes to visit as often as possible.
I have never owned a cat so I’m not 100% sure on this, but I would think no because they would remember your scent, especially if you’re visiting as often as you can.
I think I miss you the most when I’m hurting. When I’m upset and something’s wrong and more than anyone else, I want you by my side. To comfort me, to hold me in your arms. I just want you.
That’s one thing that the military has taught me, is how to be strong on my own. To wipe my own tears. To pick myself back up and to keep on going. Because most times you can’t be here, but that’s alright.
Because I think that’s part of how I know you’re “the one”. When things are absolutely horrible, I want you by my side. When I’m having my best day yet, I want to share it with you. When I see something amazing, I turn to you to enjoy it with.
No, my relationship isn’t conventional. We spend most of our time long distance. Its normal to go 2 weeks without seeing each other. We’re on different schedules. Some days we hardly talk. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything. He still makes me feel loved and cared for, even when he can’t be here. I’m his support and encouragement over the phone, on the long, hard days. Moments together are treasured. Those good morning and good night messages mean the world. I love my crazy, unconventional, wonderful but stressful, long distance relationship.
