Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust

i feel like Bubblegum's transformation in/role in elements is so underdiscussed in terms of really appreciating what it says about her as a character ugh UGH i love elements and even though PB is not there for long, every moment she's there drives me nuts. like her control driven impulse, her attempt to recreate the Mother Gum (and have a world where everything is safe, everything makes sense, nobody questions her, nobody confuses her) being so powerful she could transform OTHER elementals AND she almost took over the entirety of Ooo. being so obsessed with making everyone happy and carefree and connected to her... reminds me of her looking at her family turned into candy people in bonnibel bubblegum (episode) and saying they were happier and more unburdened that way. elemental was kind of her outlet to feel that really intensely.

and also just to reiterate she literally seemed to be the most powerful elemental there, not because candy is inherently more powerful than the other three, but because her force of will; her convictions and her obsessions. i LOVE HER SOOO MUUUCH.

The sexual objectification of Vampire Hunter D's female characters is just really, really weird, dude. Like, usually when you think of a woman written by a man in an objectifying way you think of a girl with zero personality or agency in the plot outside of being a living reward for the male protagonist, right? But the thing is, Vampire Hunter D's leading ladies generally have more agency in the plot than D himself does. In fact, in a vacuum, with only a description of the characters and their arcs to go on, you might be forgiven for thinking that Vampire Hunter D has some perfectly decent leading ladies, and honestly it does. Doris Lang is a treat. The problem is that the narrator himself is just so exceedingly horny for these women that it makes the book actively uncomfortable to read. The man feels the need to not only point out that the female deuteragonist is only seventeen years old and a virgin, but to reiterate it throughout the book. It's just baffling.

Little VHD Bloodlust things that live rent free in my head

D is painfully overpowered and this adds to the horror rather than undermines. The horror alone doesn't come from 'Thank god he's on our side.' It comes from inevitability. It comes from his battle with the spiritual half of Carmilla and how we see a closeup of a rather animalistic looking D. This is just a foreshadowing of when the beast within finally wins.

'When that day comes, another will come to hunt me. It's as simple as that.' Just think about that for a second. Imagine it's your first day as a hunter. You are excited to go kick some serious vampire ass. Your first assignment is to fucking cut down Dracula's son. You have to fight the superboss on Level 1.

D has to have some insanely strong conviction not to succumb to bloodlust in his 10,000 years of living. But nothing lasts forever. There is a non zero chance he could finally go apeshit tomorrow.

D and Lefty could theoretically put vacuums in the future out of business. The very same hand that lives rent free in a certain Vampire King's son's hand has sucked up pocket dimensions can also swallow up dust, mold, and mildew in no time flat!

On a more horrifying note, imagine if D (post succumbing to the beast within) used Lefty to drain blood without the need of hollow fangs. Just imagine....
