Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust conjures a world where silence reigns, shadows linger, and every reflection hints at a deeper mystery. A haunting blend of gothic elegance and surreal stillness, etched in marble and memory ~

D as an angel would be the most magnificent thing my eyes could ever see
His beauty would be almost incomprehensible, too vast for human eyes to behold
His wings would be gigantic, immense, oversized, made of black feathers
He would be silent you wouldn’t even hear him arrive, flying (Or perhaps the loud sound of his wings beating the air around him) while the light emanating from him and his dark wings protects you and wraps around you
I can see that
My eyes are blessed

There lies the issue though. It's not feasible to frame a survival horror game around an Unstoppable Force. You're not just someone hired to save a woman from a vampire.
You are Dracula's Success. A Pallid Machine of Death. There's no fear involved with running out of ammunition for your weapons because you are the weapon. You aren't locked in with the monsters. They're locked in with you.
Ok listen. D being in a survival horror game wouldn't be viable. One of the cornerstones of survival horror is that you are a Person in a Situation and you're much vulnerable. Your very existence rings the dinner bell to the resident creeps and ghouls and beasties. A walking meatbag. Survival horror is about taking it slow and letting the ambiance sink into you. We instead need a Fromsoft game a la Bloodborne that pays more respect to VHD's dynamic battle sequences.
You aren't fighting bosses.
You are the boss.
Battles are brutal and unforgiving. You yourself must become something bestial and unknowable to survive. The blood that stains you galvanizes you. The very visage of this should scream to those passing by 'You should have seen the other guy....'
Despite the nature of shedding oneself to practically become a beast, just remember: a hunter must hunt.
#the only things vhd ps1 does pay respect to the film is thru the music and the aesthetic. and that's it#it feels like a weird slog at points imo. but it's. ok.#correct me if i'm wrong

A Silent Realization D x Reader
The fire crackled softly in the distance, casting flickering shadows against the stone walls of the abandoned outpost they had taken shelter in for the night. It was cold—too cold for a human to be comfortable—but Y/N hadn’t complained once.
Y/N sat with her knees drawn up, absently running her fingers along the edge of a worn map, studying it as if it held all the answers she needed. D was seated across from her, quiet as always, sharpening his blade with slow, practiced motions.
He shouldn’t have been watching her.
But he was.
Not directly—his eyes never lingered too long—but he was aware of the way she tucked her hair behind her ear when it fell into her face, the way her brow furrowed in thought, the way she chewed on the inside of her cheek when something didn’t make sense.
She didn’t notice his gaze.
Or, at least, he thought she didn’t.
Then it happened.
Y/N shifted slightly, leaning closer to the map, and in doing so, her forehead lightly bumped the brim of his hat.
She froze.
He did too.
For a moment, neither of them moved.
Then, as if the realization hit her all at once, she straightened so fast she nearly knocked over the map, her face turned away in a clear attempt to pretend it hadn’t happened.
“Sorry.”
It was a single word, mumbled more to herself than to him. But her reaction—that sudden, startled retreat—made something stir deep inside him.
D said nothing. He simply went back to his blade, running the sharpening stone along the edge with steady, controlled precision.
But the weight of the moment stayed with him.
Y/N had always been careful around him. Cautious, measured, like she didn’t want to overstep some invisible boundary. Yet for just a second, she had gotten too close. And the way she had reacted—the way her heart had jumped, just slightly—
His grip on the blade tightened.
His left hand snickered. “Well, well. That was interesting.”
D ignored it.
But as the fire continued to burn low, and Y/N kept her focus stubbornly on the map, he found himself glancing at her again.

Thinking of this scene where D uses his powers to kill the spiritual half of Carmilla. It’s less a ‘Holy shit, D’s powerful!!’ scene and more of a warning of what he’ll be when his nature takes him.
Those bared fangs… those near animalistic, murderous eyes….
It’s not a matter of if, but when he’ll make a meal out of anything with a pulse. Nothing lasts forever.
Also whoever is tasked with hunting him will have a hell of a fight on their hands.

More existential what-if sadfuel VHD edition because why not
The age of vampires and dhampirs is a wellspring of tragedy. Consider the perception of time and it greatly it is affected based on one's age. Imagine being mortal and experiencing that pang of sadness from an old haunt and thinking 'this used to be an (x)'
Days melt together in a weird time-sludge. You are old enough to experience that part of you die knowing that places you held dear (and some people too) have gone the way of the winds. You will lose many allies if you get too close.
Being long-living you now gain the perk of experiencing cycles that no one lives long enough to witness. You have witnessed the death of civilizations, empires, and the continued folly of keeping traditions unhindered.
Consider D. He's 10,000+ years old. Imagine the perception of time is so great given his advanced age. The death of many allies, empires, civilization, etc. could take places for many centuries. To him these repeated losses feel closer to happening in a period of several weeks. If that.

The vampiric urge to go to the same place, expecting a different experience, getting a different experience and then mourning because things have changed.
#vampires as a metaphor for traditions and the weird means of keeping them in place will never not be relevant to me#vampirism is when existential isolation

I wonder what happened to Meier in the ship. What did he do? He still brought her to the stars even though she was dead.
#this tracks: vamp tech in the world of vhd is rly advanced (i.e. the resting house in the early part of the film#the book version of which also has a self-sanitizing system that eradicates bacteria of whomever enters it#and hell that rocket still works with virtually no issue despite not being used in some time
