Hemispheres collide
The evergreen Prostanthera cuneatea is not enjoying the heavy rain and lately the frosts we are experiencing this winter. A native of the Southern Hemisphere it is dropping shoals of the small, evergreen leaves that cover its shoots. These are distinctly aromatic releasing a menthol odour. Once the shoots are seen under magnification the leaf surface is seen to be covered with minute oil glands, from which the scent emanates. On casual observation the plant looks like any woody shrub but magnified there is a resemblance to the fleshy structure seen in Kalanchoe. Thanks to Frieda Christie for the microscope images. Otherwise a healthy plant, to be seen in the NE corner of the QMMG, this stunted woody shrub is suited to a warm, dry aspect with free draining soil. Recognised as endangered in its native SE Australia.

December 2015 Garden Wildlife Report
Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea), 11 December 2015. Photo Robert Mill
December was a very wet and stormy month, with three named storms: Desmond over the first weekend, Eva in mid-month and Frank towards the end. The Garden was closed on some days because of the weather. Despite this, one species was added to the Garden’s list, which ended the year on 789.
Birds Thirty-four bird species were recorded at the Edinburgh Garden during December. The Dipper first seen last month visited on at least four occasions (20th, 22nd, 23rd and 31st), again always beside the upper two Biodiversity Garden ponds beside the John Hope Gateway, and might well have been present on other dates over the Christmas period when no recording could be done. Other notable records were Redwing on seven dates, a wintering Blackcap (7th, 17th), Grey Wagtail on 14th, 23rd and 24th, and Buzzard on 10th and 11th. Three Mute Swans flew over on 15th, a relatively unusual sight at the Garden although they are resident on the pond in nearby Inverleith Park. Mallards were once again back in residence on our Pond on almost all dates, after their November ‘holiday’. A pair of Tawny Owls was heard calling in the early evening of 15th. The complete list of 34 species recorded during December was: Blackbird, Blackcap, Black-headed Gull, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Buzzard, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Dipper, Dunnock, Feral Pigeon, Goldfinch, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Long-tailed Tit, Magpie, Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Oystercatcher, Redwing, Robin, Siskin, Song Thrush, Sparrowhawk, Tawny Owl, Wood Pigeon, Wren.
Insects and other invertebrates: Very few invertebrate records were made in December 2015. This was partly due to the time of year, when flowers have stopped blooming and leaves have all fallen, but the incessant rain and wind also played a significant part. In past Decembers there have been occasional sightings of bees, bugs or even butterflies but these were all absent in December 2015. However, one hoverfly was surprisingly spotted on 18th and identified as a Syrphus species, most likely S. torvus. The mines of two species of leaf-mining moth and three leaf-mining flies were seen on the few remaining leaves. Among other flies, Winter Gnat was seen on 10th and the fly Phaonia tuguriorum was seen on 4th. Three harvestmen species were seen: Dicranopalpus ramosus at its usual spot near the herbarium on 3rd and 4th, Oligolophus hanseni on 7th and Oligolophus tridens on 18th. The latter was the only new Garden record of the month and the last addition to the 2015 list.

Seeds in profusion
Berberis aristata
Now is the time to look beneath established Berberis bushes and observe germinating seedlings. As can be seen from the attached image of Berberis aristata the viability of the seed crop is good. If you are not in need of these juveniles then at the earliest convenience take a digging fork and swath it through the soft growth. If possible choose a dry day when desiccation will prevent re growth. Wait much longer and the seedlings become woody, will have a developing root system that also anchor each into the soil, making eradication that little more difficult.

Objects from the Temperate Palm House - New Exhibition
Objects from the Temperate Palm House, an exhibition using remnants of historic palm trees once grown in the Botanic Garden’s Victorian palm houses will open at Bargain Spot project space in Edinburgh city centre on Friday 15th January 2016.
The exhibition engages eleven contemporary artists from Scotland, UK and Europe who will present new, existing and commissioned work alongside these artefacts from the collection of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.
The artefacts include a variety of species originating in South America and the Asia-Pacific regions including Archontophoenix alexandrae, and the now threatened species Cryosophila nana, as well as sections of Livistona australis which was in 1960 the tallest palm in Britian at 72ft.
All are welcome to attend the preview on Friday 15 January, 6 – 8pm. The exhibition continues to 27 February 2016.
Objects from the Temperate Palm House is supported by Creative Scotland and Hope Scott Trust. With thanks to Louise Galloway, Fiona Inches and the Horticulture team at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.

A winter warmer
A winter warmer for Hedychium and Brugmansia
Better to be prepared than to lose the living plant. A timely cover of straw, laid loosely on top of the crowns of Hedychium spicatum and Brugmansia aurea will keep the cold and damp from destroying the growing parts of these semi tender plants. The air trapped within the dry straw acts as an insulating layer. This gives the root zone protection from penetrating frost and lingering damp. The plants being native respectively to the Chinese Himalayas bordering Burma and the Ecuadorian Andes. In the wild they will not experience the lingering damp cold that our climate is renowned for.
