Why would I write when I could imagine my characters going through the story and then get upset when a copy of the work doesn’t magically appear in front of me

Frog in the Well DVD commentary
I’m still not sure if DVD commentary is something people enjoy reading, but I had made an important discovery while writing “Frog in the Well” and I needed to SHARE that discovery with THE WORLD. It is my sacred obligation. So even if DVD commentary is not usually cup of tea, please read this so you can learn about the Gayest Grimm Fairy Tale that the World Forgot.
Because oh my gosh, I have been so excited about this discovery for weeks now and I’ve been waiting to finish the fic so I can tell it to you all.
(Spoilers for “Frog in the Well,” if you haven’t read the ending yet it is here.)
(Also, I apologize ahead of time for the length.)
Alrighty, SO!! I love fairy tales, a lot. And I have read *a lot* of fairy tale retellings throughout the years, and I’ve watched all the fairy tale movie adaptations I can get my hands on. I actually pride myself on knowing a lot about obscure fairy tales, or things that not a lot of people know about fairy tales, if they’re only familiar with the popularized versions.
So when people over on Archive suggested I do a MidoTaka story to Princess and the Frog, I went yeah, OK, I can do that. But I wanted to re-read the original Grimm version for inspiration, because I wasn’t sure how exactly I wanted to fit the story all together. I looked through my copy of Grimm’s Complete Tales, forgot that the fairy tale is actually known as “The Frog Prince” and then realized it actually appears in the collection as “The Frog-King” and I read it.
And. !!!! My God!!!! The ending!!!!!!
I can’t possibly have ever read this story before, because that ending is amazing and gay and I need to tell you about it!!
But before we get there, some explanation. I’ve always been sorta iffy on the Grimm version of Frog Prince (the Disney movie, however, is one of my favorites) because I knew the princess in that story is, for lack of a better word, kind of a bitch. Like, absolutely, Number One Princess that Does Not Deserve Her Happily Ever After.
If you don’t know, in the Grimm version, the princess does not break the spell by kissing the frog, she actually throws him into a wall. (Grimm versions have an awful lot of violence in breaking spells. Snow White isn’t kissed either. The prince drops her coffin.)
And here’s the thing: when I was younger, that upset me. Because here’s this frog, who does a nice thing for the princess, and all he asks in return is that she keeps him at her side. That’s it!! There are so many other princes in fairy tales who are like, “Eh, I’ll marry you if you can SPIN STRAW INTO GOLD” or “separate these piles of grain” or “solve these THREE IMPOSSIBLE riddles.” But no, all the frog wants in some company.
And the princess is like, “ew, no” and eventually throws the frog into a wall. (Apparently, in other versions, she actually beheads him.)
And this frog is super nice! That is also rare in fairy tales. His description when he turns back into a human is “a King’s son with beautiful kind eyes.” Instead of being handsome he is kind!!! This guy deserves better than some woman who can’t keep bargains and throws poor frogs into walls.
Now, as I am older, I can almost kind of respect that in a princess. Because in a lot of other fairy tales, the princesses/women have very little choice in marriage. It is almost always, “this prince came, saw, decided he would marry her, so he did.” They very rarely get to refuse anything. So, now, I can kind of appreciate a princess with standards. It’s sort of like, alright princess, you be you. Don’t settle for anything. If life gives you frogs, don’t give in until you can get a prince with kind eyes.
That’s why in “Frog in the Well” I didn’t want to make the princess into the bad guy. For one thing, I really hate the trope of the Evil Woman who gets in the way of the men loving other men, so I didn’t want to make her evil, per se. So I wanted to make it clear that Midorima is actually killing her, because he’s a demon, and that’s what demons do, and the princess throwing him into the wall was actually a defiant act of self-defense.
BUT. Now we get to My Amazing Discovery.
So I’m re-reading “The Frog-King” in order to get ideas for this fanfic, and I reach this passage:
Tumblr media
And I was like “!!!!” WHAT IS THIS? WHO IS THIS? HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT FAITHFUL HENRY?!?!!
I ran across another version of the story, one by Philip Pullman, who explains that the title of the fairy tale is actually sometimes, “The Frog-King, or Iron Heinrich” and makes the point of saying that even though Iron Heinrich (as he was translated in that version) literally comes out of no where, he is apparently important enough to the story that he is sometimes included in the title, although most people tend to forget he exists because again, he comes out of no where.
I cannot stress how floored I am by this man’s existence. I can’t believe the story ends not on the princess marrying the prince but on this poor man who loved his master so much his heart was bound three times in iron.
Why are there not a million fairy tale retellings that have Frog-Prince/Faithful Henry endings?! Someone needs to write that book! Should I write that book?! The world needs to know about Faithful Henry and his deep love for the Prince with Kind Eyes!
Anyway, that’s why I decided to write Takao as Faithful Henry, and also why I spent so much time stressing the way Takao feels like this story is not about him. When he goes invisible it’s a direct homage to the fact that everyone forgets Faithful Henry.
And that concludes my dvd commentary and PSA to #RememberFaithfulHenry. Thank you to everyone who read this dvd commentary, sorry it was long, but if you enjoyed it, please let me know and I will happily include dvd commentary with all the fairy tales! =)

the thing is that, the Winter Cup happens during the course of around a week, so imayoshi saying “well, that has nothing to do with us now” about the tourney after they lost against seirin is rly funny taking into account like two days later he just.... shows up to the seirin/rakuzan match with the rest of tōō bc ofc he does lmao
