Rotoscoping Tutorial by @antoniosvivaldi​​

Hi everyone! I’m excited to announce my long-delayed Rotoscoping Tutorial - requested by a number of people over the past calendar year. 

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create the cutout gifs like this (and seen in most of my gifsets under this tag) with Rotoscoping on After Effects. I’ll also provide additional examples and a number of things that I do to optimise my giffing / Rotoscoping workflow (e.g. useful shortcuts & other things to be aware of).

For quick reference, here are example gifsets (and where Rotoscoping is used in the posts) that I will mention in the tutorial:

What you need & need to know:

Software: Photoshop & After Effects (After Effects 2021 or later for Rotobrush 2.0)*

Hardware: 16GB RAM required to run later versions of AE*

Difficulty: Advanced; Knowledge in making gifs, applying layer masks, and using video timeline interface assumed

Key concepts: Rotoscoping (AE) / Video Timeline (AE+ PS) / Layer Masks & Groups (PS)

*I’m currently running the latest version of PS & AE on an M2 Mac, but I’ve also used older versions (CC 2015 & 2020) on Intel-based Macs. I’ll outline some known compatibility & performance issues, and workarounds later in this tutorial that could help streamline your giffing workflow.

GIF SHARPENING ACTION 2.0 by @daenerys-stormborn

This is an updated version of my “all in one” gif action I made 5 years ago. It very similar but I added a new sharpening that I now use, v3: sharper blur.

Please read this for a more detailed breakdown of how these actions work.

v1: normal -  smart sharpen (amount 500%, .3px)

v2: sharper - first smart sharpen (amount  500%, .3px) -> second smart sharpen (amount 10%, 10px)

v3: sharper blur -  first smart sharpen (amount  500%, .3px) -> second smart sharpen (amount 20%, 10px) -> gaussian blur (radius 1px; opacity 52%) -> third smart sharpen (amount 500%, 0.2px) -> fourth smart object (amount 5%, 5 pixels) -> second gaussian blur (radius 1, opacity 10%)

**v2 looks better in 540 gifs than smaller gifs, its a bit over sharpened here for my taste**

Actions also included:

Load Files Fast - for people using PS CS6 or older, uses “Load  Multiple DICOM Files” for faster screencap loading.

Brighten - duplicates the smart object then changes blending mode to screen and converts it back into one single smart object to brighten dark scenes.

Convert to Frame Timeline - converts smart object back into frames, sets frame delay, and changes canvas sizes to -2px (width & height) to take away transparent border around gifs (you can always delete this part if it doesn’t apply, please read detailed breakdown for more info).

Convert to Video Timeline - converts frames in frame timeline into a smart object in video timeline.

The fanbase-led organization LOONA Union has been advised by lawyers that Orbits can help LOONA with their lawsuit for contract termination through a petition. LOONA Union has reached out to LOONA’s law firm, and they have accepted Orbits’ offer to help.

Please read everything carefully before proceeding with filling out the petition form!

1. Go to bit.ly/LOONAUNION 2. Download and print the form 3. Fill out the form by hand:

At the top of the page write the following information: full name, address, contact, date of birth

For “contact” you can write your phone number or your email address, in case of phone number please block out the middle digits (012 – xxx - 1221)

If you have more things to add to the petition, write it down by hand, using the 5W1H method. Write the reasons for loss of trust as a consumer. Avoid(!) writing about facts of the legal case or contracts, or making emotional appeals. Write authentically and factually about what you have felt as a fan regarding the world tour schedule, damages caused by the BBC etc. Do not copy given examples word for word.

At the bottom of the page write the date, your name and signature

4. Take a photo of the filled-out form (using the iPhone notes app or a scanner app like CamScanner) or scan it 5. Save the file with your name (yourname.pdf or yourname.jpg) 6. If there are multiple photos or scans compress them into a zip file or merge them into one single pdf file 7. Upload your file and submit it before February 9th, through the link provided in step 1

- The petition forms will be delivered directly to the law firm representing LOONA - Personal information will never be shared externally - Please read the instructions very carefully as forms that are deemed inappropriate will be excluded - Do not submit multiple petition forms, one petition form per person - Typed forms will not be counted - This post is a summary of the announcement put out by LOONA Union regarding the petition, you can find the original announcement with example photos, and videos on their accounts linked below
