not that your historical contextualization isn't enlightening but an improperly close association with sex workers is also a consistent source of tywin's hatred for tyrion, and not because tywin is like #woke about the rights of woman... asoiaf alone should make clear what grates viserys and otto about the situation but i fear people have brainworms about daemon specifically
yeah that’s my point - you’ll see arguments about how the show or characters should be judged by contemporary standards because it is not historical fiction/written by contemporary people and thus more reflective of contemporary concerns, but this does not hold if you analyze the in in universe society which has many patterns of thoughts which are at odds in various ways with our own, and it is holding to a contemporary judgement that leads to misreading the fantasy setting when a historical framework might illuminate. and yeah that element is really funny - the extremely ugly language viserys and otto use to discuss mysaria in 1.02 as well as what they are in concert doing to alicent in that episode makes it ludicrous when people act like their issue is…daemon’s lack of respect for women?

To be totally honest, the way you started the comment exchange and then abandoned it when you weren’t getting the level of attention or engagement you expected for yourself comes across as really self-serving. It feels like the whole thing was only ever about boosting your own work, rather than building any kind of actual community. Like you're the one who started this so called "popularity contest" and it's giving "person who threw a party and got mad no one got them gifts". What's the point of doing this if you're just going to lowk guilt trip people for not doing what you expected them to do. Idk it put a bad taste in my mouth.
you have no idea what you are talking about. that would be my generous assessment of this ask, but of course i think you do know and are just saying this to be an ass. i haven’t abandoned anything. i put an extraordinary amount of work in for more than a month logging literally hundreds of comments for this fun little event that has brought a lot of positive energy to the fandom and which is still ongoing. i am a full time student with a job and simply got very busy and so my friends who helped plan the event have kindly taken over in logging the comments - many of which were for my fics, so i did “get what i wanted” out of it, thanks - and manning the social media accounts for me for the last few weeks. i will be back to organize the prompt event with the winning team :)) anyone who follows me knows i am a mentally ill individual who vents my various agonies on this, my personal blog which is entirely separate from any fandom events i run, and one of those agonies has long been my fic reception. it predates this event which was intended to address (and delightfully has) a widespread feeling of lack of response among the fandom’s writers and will outlast it.
#I put in months of work for no reward but wanting to build fandom community and succeeded#you are a bad person.#it is not abandoned#you made that up lol

an interesting example of “no hotd is not historical fiction but if you don’t treat the in universe society as separate from ours you will be led into grave errors of analysis” is the gendered implications of daemon’s close associations with sex workers. a lot of posters on here take this as a sign of daemon’s unimpeachable masculinity - he’s “objectifying women” or whatever. but the important thing to note is that in the actual medieval period being too into sex workers was considered effeminate. it was a sign of a dismaying lack of masculine self-command over one’s baser, irrational urges. it is very much a post-victorian ideal to associate women with sexlessness; in the medieval period a sign of femininity was unrestrained sexual rapaciousness. to which one might counter aha! but the show is written by contemporary americans! and it’s true i doubt ryan condal had this in mind, but it is to ignore the textual evidence of the show itself to assert our own assigned meanings for sexual behaviors as unchanging and transhistorical…because in the show itself both viserys and otto find daemon’s association with mysaria and taste for lower class company so repulsive they consider it a part of why he is unfit to hold masculine sovereign power! it far more meaningfully aligns with a pretty different way of valuing masculine sexual behaviors.

again it is really upsetting to me how “haha daemon is in love with his brother and sad he can’t marry him” is funny to the same people who rightfully recognize the sadness of the sort of inherent intrusive sexualization of daemon and rhaenyra’s relationship when she’s a teenager. ok so is the intergenerational incest conditioning shit bad or not. why is being a victim of such a system you yourself have classified as damaging or abusive simply hysterical to you when you don’t like a guy. starting to think maybe genuine concern for the harms of incestuous family structures is not your real motivation.
#this is like inescapable in rhaenicent spaces particularly#people who just think it is#like side splitting funny or gross and disgusting#really fucked lol#ok so WHY do you think daemon is like that with rhaenyra.#the show is so clear how it is this unfulfilled relational destiny that has wrecked daemon’s entire life/personality#but like the very thing that then cyclically catches rhaenyra in the crossfire#is funny to the people who lament that#none of this is serious to anyone it’s just icky

I don’t have anything specifically personal to speak about most of the time when I’m on anon, I’m just shy haha. But I’ve found your writings, personal, analytical and fictional, to be deeply meaningful and reflective. I’m not a huge smut person so I haven’t read everything you’ve written but RR is so well done that I keep returning to it, the chapter with Alicent and Daemon opening up to each other was written with such empathy and understanding that it honestly takes my breath away. Your discussion on the lesser bohemians and my dark vanessa inspired me to read both, and the lesser bohemians especially has stuck with me like a burr. I find myself thinking of ‘can you grow up in one night?’ constantly at this point in my life, and I wouldn’t have known about it without your posts! I’m definitely a fan of yours <3
thank you for this lovely ask! the daemon and alicent chapter of rr is very very dear to me and i’m always so pleased to know when people take recommendations of mine 💜💜💜

It really makes me sick to see people giving money to penny weeklies when Franklin's expedition STILL has not been found 😭 There are good men out there trapped in unimaginable temperatures and literally all that's needed is a little more funding for another rescue mission yet all you guys seem to care about are your vulgar little stories...

I swear this website has 0 reading comprehension skills. Darwin NEVER claimed we "evolved" from apes like if one of you guys actually bothered to open his new book you'll see all his arguments are backed up by evidence. He actually makes a lot of sense
#sure there's nuance like i don't fully agree with all of it #but his general theory of natural selection seems pretty sound imo

It's not problematic to acknowledge the fact that Heathcliff was a brute like he literally killed dogs in case you forgot. Anyway #rochestersweep

I love the implication here that Rochester never did anything cruel either. He literally locked his wife in the attic and lied to Jane about it 😭 like that was a pretty significant thing that happened

i treasure a lot of anon comments but so very much of my most meaningful feedback being anon comments has also really done a number on me. i understand why when a lot of that meaningful feedback is personal trauma stuff so i am not angry at anyone and i get why in a lot of individual instances. it just doesn’t feel good in aggregate that so much is that + DMs. turning off anon would equal like silence so that’s no good but man. other people get public, communal enthusiasm. i can never get that, when it is also a key feature of fandom community at its best. it is emotionally hard.
#it doesn’t feel good! it doesn’t feel good other people get public enthusiasm and i get treated like a dirty little secret#i am proud to claim this stuff.#i think it’s good. i am proud of it.

like i just feel. crushed. i am writing consistently and i hate it and there’s no joy in it that has just been blasted out of the enterprise of fandom and fanfic at some point while it has not become any less simultaneously necessary.

For the purpose of this poll, books in the same world but not Directly sequels count. If they're grouped on Goodreads, it counts. So like, Percy Jackson but also Magnus Chase count as the same series.
#tbh probs still the thoroughbreds books from when i was a kid#i think i read through the first like. 60

never felt like this in ‘the magicians’ fandom bc it was just SO much smaller, there was not really room for bigger/smaller fics or writers or this sort of popularity element. we were all equally unpopular because there were 5 of us grateful for everything posted and it was so fucking nice lol
