I’ve heard people say like “Watcher expected their parasocial fans to just happily pay the fee” but if anything I think the opposite. I feel like the whole subscription thing was them thinking “of course our fans will be happy to pay more for the expensive shit we want to do, because we have vision, because we are artístés” and they were actually surprised when everyone was like uh dude your film degree means nothing to me. I think Watcher was under the impression their fan base was about the art, not the artist. Which is so funny because this is a ghost hunting show. It’s like a grocery store romance novelist being confused that people want to see romance scenes and missed her subtle nod to the deleted scenes in Citizen Kane.

i think this very firmly hits one of the main points on the head. i do think that they severely misinterpreted what their audience prioritizes (high production quality > personality and comfort). i think a lot of their staunch supporters throughout this also fell into this trap a little bit. i saw a lot of "it's their channel, they can make what they want and don't have to listen to the demands of their audience" which is again, technically true, but that doesn't make them entitled to an audience.

if anything, i feel like this debacle just highlighted the honestly astounding amount of people who have continued to support them despite not even having a strong interest in their content since the move to watcher. and maybe that's not what they wanted to hear, but there are a lot of people who would love to have their audience's love and dedication

that said, i will still be watching their videos as they pop up on my yt home page. but i just really wonder about the longevity of the channel if this was their plan to save themselves financially. it really seems like none of them have a clue about this stuff and just threw any idea at the wall and went w the one that stuck for one second longer than the rest

the new video was greatly needed if watcher had any hopes of staying afloat. unfortunately, this backpedaling does not change the fact that

1) high production "television quality" content is what they want to make

2) this content is evidently not what people want to watch (even post-apology i'm seeing a lot of people saying they liked bfu better than anything watcher has produced)

again, if they have a clear vision of what they want to make, that's great. but unless there's a market for that content, then it's not going to turn a profit, or break even for that matter. yes, artists deserve to be paid for their work, but art is always bought by people who want and have an interest in said art.

im an artist pursuing my dreams too, but i don't expect people to buy my niche paintings just on the principle that i am an artist creating what i want. if i wanted to make money from this and turn it into a business, i would take commissions and specifically create what other people want. that is what having any kind of artistic job is about, unfortunately.

it's great if what you want to create and what people want to see overlap, but that's not always the case. and i really fear this is the case with watcher and they won't pivot enough to fix any of their problems

"do you have any idea how much money their new content costs to produce?" the insane part is that no one asked for higher production quality. the people watching ryan bergara and shane madej are in it for their personalities, not professional cinematography and expensive locations. if they want to create bigger budget things, good for them. but doing it at the expense of a majority of their audience isn't going to get them where they think it is. and the fact of the matter is that very few people are going to pay a monthly fee for so little content.

if they wanted to do this in a way that had a semi-decent shot at working, they should've been building a catalogue for this service for A While now. only people with money to burn are going to pay $6 a month for a platform with a weekly upload schedule and no back catalogue, this decision literally makes no financial sense and they are most definitely going to feel that

even if watcher backs down from this decision i don't think they realize the backlash will be permanent. like did you guys not see what happened when the fine bros tried to trademark React? the bad taste will not just go away because you changed your mind and many fans will never trust you again
